Dead Girls Are Easy by Terri Garey (VO)

Nicki Styx, Book 1

Synopsis : “My name is Nicki Styx, and I thought I had the world all figured out. Then I regained consciousness.”

There’s something about almost dying that makes a girl rethink her priorities. Take Nicki Styx – she was strictly goth and attitude, until a brush with the afterlife leaves her with the ability to see dead people.

Before you can say boo, Atlanta’s ghosts are knocking on the door of Nicki’s hip vintage clothing store, Handbags and Gladrags. While she’d much rather be engaging in a few one-on-one anatomy lessons with the hot doctor who saved her life, she’s become a dead chick magnet to the dearly departed, and they don’t take no for an answer!

Things get even more complicated when a friend foolishly sells her soul to the Devil, and Nicki’s new gift lands her in some deep voodoo.

As Nicki Styx discovers, dead girls are easy… it’s the live ones who cause trouble!

Review : Here I am again with some paranormal Chick-lit. I was quite intrigued by this one which mixes this time ghosts and Voodoo. I’m always so interested by this kind of books, I didn’t know a lot about this religion, as I haven’t read a lot of books about this subject.

So we can meet Nicki who almost dies, but who finally goes back in our world with a new mission : to help the dead. But helping them wasn’t our heroine’s goal who thinks it’s more like a weight than a gift. I really like her rebellious and unconventional nature, she is very different from some heroine we could meet in other books. She doesn’t care to come in this world that is waiting her, but she has no other choices, and she finds herself in a story that will change her life forever. We’ll discover two other important characters for the story : Evan and Joe. Evan is her typical gay best-friend, always here to listen to her or even help her, except if it involves some Voodoo priestess. I liked him quite fast, I think he is the perfect friend ! Despite he always wants to be involved in the love life of our heroine.

Joe, meanwhile, is a hot doctor who brings Nicki back to life. And since it happens, he follows her everywhere, we don’t know why but it doesn’t bother her at all ! I was very surprised that in the beginning, he tells her he was married, I didn’t expect that… Mainly to a woman that could be (or is) the twin sister of Nicki. So after that, I find a weird side of this relationship, and I was a little uncomfortable about it all along the story. Okay, they don’t have the same nature but it was really weird. Well, I was very happy too to see them together, it was inevitable. I confess that now I’m very curious to know more about this missing sister and so finally learn how the reunion will happen !

I really like too everything about the Voodoo, it was interesting to see the spells and learn some stories I didn’t know anything about. It was too intriguing to see Nikki evolve in this new world she tries to understand. We discover some disadvantages to this practice but also about the ghosts who are not always some friendly spirits.

I think it was a nice story, easy to read, perfect to relax.

  1. I got into this series by reading the first of the offshoot. I was so happy to get this one on sale. So, I haven’t read it yet. I can see that it didn’t totally rock your socks off, but it isn’t a bad start. I think it will get better as it goes along because I loved Sammy the devil. 😀 He must come later. 😉

  2. Oh there is one book before this one ? It’s a nice book, but I think the author insists a lot about this unconventional relationship, with the second sister behind. oh a devil will come next ? So cool ! I haven’t seen him but now I can’t wait ! thanks !
