The Metaphysical Detective by Kirsten Weiss (VO)

Riga Hayworth, Book 1

Synopsis: When her new client is found dead, Riga Hayworth smells a set up of metaphysical proportions. Now, to find a killer, Riga must travel from San Francisco to the underworld – and make it back alive…

Review: I was very curious to start this book after reading the synopsis. I think these kinds of synopsis are very intriguing, because we don’t know a lot about the story. And I was even more curious when I saw the words “metaphysical” or even “underworld”, don’t you want to learn more with that?

What can I say about this book? Well, so many things, some good as much as some bad. After the two first chapters, I have to confess that I wondered if it was a good thing to get into this story. The sentences have a poor style, the name of the characters appears too many times, sometimes once or twice in a line or even the limited presence of adjectives. I was a little afraid to have that all along the book. Because I have to tell, in the beginning I didn’t really enjoy the story. I wondered how I would write my review to really explain my point of view.

But finally, after some other chapters, we begin to like Riga who is a quite amazing woman. She is strong, but also sensitive and she has some powers like no one else. It’s very interesting to see her evolve in the book, to discover her daily life. The character the most intriguing is of course Donovan, this man who appears suddenly in the Riga’s life and who turns it upside down. When some paranormal phenomena happen around him, we begin to ask ourselves some questions. I get quite quickly into the story as soon as Donovan was in the story in the beginning. I have to tell I was very surprised about the mythology notions in the book in the second part of the book, I didn’t expect that at all. It’s very interesting to follow all that, but I think it denoted a little too much from the first part, and we feel like we have two different stories.
So, I think the ideas are very interesting, and have a lot of potential but it’s also a little too messy and I think the story would deserve to be a little more reworked. However I’m glad for this discovery and I would be curious to read the next book to see how the author writing style has evolved.

  1. Awww, Mel, it’s too bad that you didn’t like this one as much as you hoped you would! I definitely agree: the idea of it is really cool, but a messy execution could bring it down for sure. Still, the surprising mythology notions are a plus! And Riga sounds great! 🙂

Thank you so much for the awesome honest review, Mel! <3 Even if it wasn't your cup of tea, I'm glad that you still enjoyed some parts of it!

  2. Hmmm… sounds like this book could use some editing maybe? Things like that bother me too, so your not alone.
I never know what to think of a brief description. I guess if they use the right keywords to get our attention it works, but sometimes I just need to know MORE first. Anyway, sorry you didn’t like it more!

  3. You’re a much braver reader than I am! I’m not sure I ever would have picked this one up after reading such a short, vague summary. Sorry that this one didn’t turn out to be a hidden gem.
It’s too bad that poor writing ruined much of the read for you. I’m glad the mythology and Riga at least worked for you. I hate reading books that I don’t end up loving. I feel crappy the entire time I write a review and I feel like I wasted time where I could have been reading something else. Hopefully your next read is an amazing one 🙂

    • it was my first adult self-published book, so I was quite intrigued. It was quite difficult but I think we understand quite easily the writing style with the first chapters. Yes, I agree with you, it doesn’t happen a lot though. Yes hopefully I have plenty of books I’m sure I’ll love too. Thank you Kaity!
