Sea Change by S.M. Wheeler

Synopsis: The unhappy child of two powerful parents who despise each other, young Lilly turns to the ocean to find solace, which she finds in the form of the eloquent and intelligent sea monster Octavius, a kraken. Her journey to win Octavius’s freedom is difficult. Lilly’s quest tests her resolve, tries her patience, and leaves her transformed in every way.

Review: I was very intrigued by this book and I must say it is a completely unique novel. I do not think I’ve ever read anything of the sort, either in the writing style of the story or even in the form that the author uses.

Firstly I must say that there is no chapter in this novel. I admit this is something that was a bit disturbing at first as I use to stop at the end / beginning of each chapter while reading a book, something that is not possible here. But however, there are small breaks between each separate event, all starting with a small paragraph in italic. In terms of the story, it was also a really original theme. Lilly is a young girl who has a large birthmark on her face which makes her unfriendly to the villagers. Her parents are also not of the loving kind and it’s a pretty lonely life that awaits our young heroine. Yet at the age of eight, she meets a Kraken, Octavius who will become her only friend. They live together, appreciate and trust each other as much as they can but it is not particularly appreciated by her parents. I must say that this family is very strange and I had many questions about them. But while Lilly gently reaches eighteen years, her friend Octavius disappears. She can not let him go like this and she is convinced that something has happened to him. Determined to help and to save him, our young heroine leaves her home and embarks on a crazy adventure.

The story is really interesting and full of all kinds of events that are not expected. To save her friend, she must make many quests and therefore meet many different characters. I was curious to see how far Lilly would be willing to go to save her kraken and I must say she doesn’t have a lot of limits for that. This is a really intriguing story and it is true that the author has managed to create something completely unique. Well, I also had a little trouble understanding the story and hang over the characters as sometimes is was a little too complex for me but I loved discovering a different story like that. If you want something original, this book is definitely for you.
