——————————————————-

Welcome on Between Dreams and Reality. Can you present you in a few words?

Hi! I’m so happy to be here, and thank you for asking me to chat. J I wrote the Jensen Murphy, Ghost for Hire series, as well as the urban fantasy Vampire Babylon series, including a new spin off series with the book SHADOWS TILL SUNRISE. I have another pen name, Crystal Green, and right now, “she” is concentrating on a hot contemporary romance series called Rough and Tumble.

How would you describe the Jensen Murphy, Ghost for hire series?

Jensen is a spirit from the 1980s. She was the girl next door—the type of person everyone wanted to hang out with—until she had a tragedy in her life that sent her into a tailspin. When she died, she wasn’t in the best emotional place. In fact, she was murdered in Elfin Forest near San Diego, California. At this point in the series, she still doesn’t recall who killed her, so that’s an ongoing mystery that is explored in the most recent book, ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST. But in spite of all her woes, she’s fun-loving and still has a 1980s mentality, which makes things interesting with her!

How many books to you intend to write for the series?

At the moment, there are three books scheduled. ONLY THE GOOD DIE YOUNG is already out, ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST is out now, and EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE is scheduled for April 7, 2015. What happens in the future is up to the publishers—if the books do well enough, they’ll want more. Personally, I’d love to write a lot more Jensen!

Why did you choose to work with a ghost as a main character? It’s not something we usually see in books.

I think that’s what appealed to me about a ghost—you don’t see many of those around as protagonists. I thought it would be fun to create a world that we, as humans, cannot see, although that world greatly affects us. Ghosts still long for the regular world, but Boo World has its charms, too. There’s this invisible wall between the ghosts and our world that keeps them from fully interacting with us, and I thought it would be interesting to explore a ghost who wants to help humans solve mysteries—especially when it comes to her own murder. <G>

By the way, I based Jensen on the “final girl” type of character from 1980s slasher movies. (The “final girl” is the one who lives to fight the villain in the very end.) In particular, I based her on Ginny Field from FRIDAY THE 13th, PART 2. She’s smart, feisty, and very resourceful, but very cool to know, as well. J

What can readers expect from the upcoming sequels?

Jensen will be haunting confessions out of humans who may or may not be guilty of crimes, but first and foremost, she’s still bound and determined to find out about her own killer. That killer will play a huge part in the second and third books…Another character, Fake Dean, will be very influential in her “life,” too. We’ll find out a lot more about him as he continues to seduce her into a place that may or may not be her ultimate doom. We’ll also see much more of the other ghosts—Randy, Louis, Twyla, Scott, and the others. They’re like her new family!

What’s the hardest scene for you to write?

At first, every scene in which Jensen is haunting the humans was a challenge. I had to figure out how I could bring some scares to the books, but how do you try to give the readers a few chills if your ghost is the one doing all the scaring and you’re already in her head? That question helped me to develop a lot of Jensen’s powers as they pertain to the humans and how she’s able to haunt confessions out of them. I made it so that the human mind is like a haunted house for her—she doesn’t know what’s going to happen in anyone’s mind while she’s in there, and she can get just as scared by what’s in their heads as we get scared from ghosts.

Who is your favorite character in the series?

I have a few, but I’d say the one I have the most fun writing is Twyla. She’s a bratty little sister figure who’s half Valley Girl and half 1980s Goth, and she just doesn’t care what she says. I really enjoy Fake Dean, too. I imagine that he looks like Jax Teller on SONS OF ANARCHY—but surfer style, LOL.

Were you a reader or a non-reader while growing up?

Definitely a reader. My parents were big readers, too, and that had a lot of influence on me. We used to sit around in the family room at night, just reading and reading. It never crossed my mind that there were families who didn’t read together.

How did you celebrate your first book? Which one was it?

Oh, my—this seems so long ago! My first book was a romance I wrote as Crystal Green for what was then Silhouette Special Edition. It was called BELOVED BACHELOR DAD. <G> I celebrated by buying a nice bottle of wine.

What challenges do you face in the writing process and how do you overcome them?

These days, writers aren’t only writers—we have taken up a lot of other jobs, especially if we’re doing some self-publishing. There’s a lot of promotion, thinking about what kind of covers and copy will work, keeping websites current, keeping up with the latest business curveballs, knowing the contracts we’re signing, etc. I try to stick to a schedule, because if I don’t, I’ll never get anything done! Scheduling is huge.

What’s your favorite TV shows or movies?

Truthfully, I haven’t gone to a lot of movies lately, but I think that’s because there’s so much going on with TV! I love GAME OF THRONES, THE WALKING DEAD, THE GOOD WIFE, MAD MEN, AMERICAN HORROR STORY, TOP CHEF, CHOPPED…I think I could go on for hours!

Do you have any strange or funny habits?

Hmm. I don’t think there’s anything out of the ordinary except that I’m a pescatarian, but I generally tell everyone “vegetarian who eats fish” instead. “Pescatarian” isn’t a word many people know, LOL.

Do you have a favorite author? Or a favorite book?

I love Stephen King, Donna Tartt, and Maggie Osborne. It’s so hard to say which book is my favorite! But I’ll go with THE STAND, THE SECRET HISTORY, and THE PROMISE OF JENNY JONES.

The world is about to end and you have to assemble your perfect apocalypse team with five fictional characters – who would that be?

Oh, fun. Let’s see: Daryl from THE WALKING DEAD because he’d always have my back. Marshall the invention guy from ALIAS because we would need someone who’s that resourceful. Princess Leia because if you have intelligent beings who are bringing out that apocalypse, she’s a diplomat, and she might be able to appeal to their diplomatic instincts (if they have any). Dean Winchester, because he’s a fighter and he’s Dean, and I want him around for selfish reasons. <G> And then Superman, because he can handle a silly apocalypse.

Bienvenue sur Between Dreams and Reality. Pouvez-vous vous présenter en quelques mots ?

Salut !

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST.

ONLY THE GOOD DIE YOUNG est déjà dehors, ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST est maintenant sorti, et EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE est prévu pour le 7 Avril 2015.

J’adore GAME OF THRONES, THE WALKING DEAD, THE GOOD WIFE, MAD MEN, AMERICAN HORROR STORY, TOP CHEF, CHOPPED…

Mais j’irai avec THE STAND, THE SECRET HISTORY, et THE PROMISE OF JENNY JONES.

Oh, fun.

Jensen Murphy, Ghost for Hire, Book 2

Synopsis: Jensen Murphy is back in the spooky sequel to Only the Good Die Young.

Some people think that ghosts are spirits that refuse to go to the other side because they have unfinished business. Take my word—that’s true. I should know. I’m a ghost.

I was an ordinary eighties California girl, dead before my time, until psychic Amanda Lee Minter pulled me out of the time loop where I was reliving my death over and over. Now I’m Jensen Murphy, Ghost for Hire. I decided to put my spooky talents to use in helping Amanda Lee track down bad guys and killers (including my own).

It’s taken time to figure out exactly how that will work (our first case was definitely a learning experience for all involved), so when a young woman asks Amanda Lee for help convincing her best friend to leave a dangerously hot-tempered boyfriend, I’m ready and willing to use our collective powers on her behalf. But some people are dangerous not only to the living—especially when there are darker forces involved…

  1. I’ve been seeing this series around a lot lately and I cannot wait to meet Jensen! I love the whole concept of a ghost as the main character:) I haven’t seen Friday the 13th because I’m a chicken when it comes to horror movies (even old ones with terrible special effects), but it’s fun to know Jensen is based a bit on Ginny!

  2. I enjoyed the first book and I’m looking forward to starting book two! I was also curious about the inspiration to write about a ghost protagonist, so I’m really glad you asked that question. Loved the answer and the tidbit about the “final girl” trivia, that’s very fascinating! Awesome interview.

  3. Scary scenes are the hardest for me to write, it’s weird though, I mean it never translates well for me. I think that’s why when reading, I don’t get scared either, even when I want one to give me the creeps.

    • Kirsty-Marie, I’m the same way with reading scary scenes. They work much better for me when I can see them in movies. But that’s for a short-term scare. I think the “longer scare” works better for me in books. I’m talking about a horror concept that lingers. HELTER SKELTER is the scariest book I’ve ever read, but there were no short-term scares there. The thought of pure evil unleashed in society kept me awake!

      Thanks for commenting!
