The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty

The Daevabad Trilogy, Book 1

Synopsis: Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trade she uses to get by—palm readings, zars, healings—are all tricks, sleights of hand, learned skills; a means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles.

But when Nahri accidentally summons an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to accept that the magical world she thought only existed in childhood stories is real. For the warrior tells her a new tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire, and rivers where the mythical marid sleep; past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises, and mountains where the circling hawks are not what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass, a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound.

In that city, behind gilded brass walls laced with enchantments, behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments are simmering. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, she learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic cannot shield her from the dangerous web of court politics. That even the cleverest of schemes can have deadly consequences.

After all, there is a reason they say be careful what you wish for…

Review: Roooh how did I do to miss this gem? I admit that I regret not having read the novel earlier because I am completely under the spell! I had a great time and I am more than impatient to discover more! I loved it! Yes, you read corectly, I really loved it! Go for it!!!! Well maybe you want to know more about the story, right? I understand that!

Nahri, poor Nahri who had only one dream and it was to become a doctor, to be able to leave and to find someone who would like to teach her to become this person. Well, she did not expect such a turnaround, that’s for sure! This is also her meeting with Dara, an enigmatic Djinn that will propel her into a world she did not know about.

Ah Dara! How not to fall under your spell? How not to want to discover all the secrets that you hide, because for one, you hide many! It’s pretty hard to really tell who you are, but we’ll learn a little bit more throughout the story, even if there’s so much to discover! And this world that we discover? And Ali, this prince that we do not really know what he wants.

Oh yes, many things and all this is just a small part of the story. I loved this novel, without being able to let it go. How to resist an incredible and original universe? How to resist a story about Djinns? It’s impossible and I can tell you that you will not regret if you try it!

Unfortunately, now I will have to wait for the sequels and that will be complicated because I can not wait to find out more! And what about that end? I want more!
