Mistborn, Book 6

Synopsis: With The Alloy of Law and Shadows of Self, Brandon Sanderson surprised readers with a New York Times bestselling spinoff of his Mistborn books, set after the action of the trilogy, in a period corresponding to late 19th-century America.

Now, with The Bands of Mourning, Sanderson continues the story. The Bands of Mourning are the mythical metalminds owned by the Lord Ruler, said to grant anyone who wears them the powers that the Lord Ruler had at his command. Hardly anyone thinks they really exist. A kandra researcher has returned to Elendel with images that seem to depict the Bands, as well as writings in a language that no one can read. Waxillium Ladrian is recruited to travel south to the city of New Seran to investigate. Along the way he discovers hints that point to the true goals of his uncle Edwarn and the shadowy organization known as The Set.

Review: I really enjoyed reading the previous volume even if without knowing the original series and I was curious to find out what Brandon Sanderson would present us again. It must be said that this author has an undeniable talent to plunge us into his stories and to keep us in suspense throughout the chapters.

I found it interesting to find out at the very beginning of the volume a part of Wax past to finally see what he’d been through his childhood. We soon find him and of course all the characters that we know for a new adventure and more precisely for the wedding of Wax and Steris. You can imagine that nothing will happen as planned. Besides, this is during this celebration that a Kandra comes and wants to hire Wax so he can help them for a new investigation. All our friends, Steris, Wax, Wayne, Marasi leave for Seran to try to understand what is going on but our hero has a special interest in this investigation when he learns that his sister and uncle are involved.

I really took a great pleasure once again in following our heroes and their adventures. Steris is particularly the character I enjoyed the most. It’s always interesting to see her open up to the world of her future husband and to finally try to be a part of it too. Her lists about all the possible disasters that can happen are always very funny as well as foresight about the consequences of each. It’s really a character we enjoy a lot and it was interesting to see her evolve over the chapters with Wax. What is touching is rather to see that they can create together something different than what they had initially.

In terms of the investigation, I expected some turnarounds but it was still very interesting to discover the progress of the history and to see the ideas of the author. I will not say more to you but in any case it was a very nice new novel and I am once again looking forward to immersing myself in the sequel and to discover even more! As always Brandon Sanderson does not disappoint!

Peu de gens pensent qu’ils existent vraiment. Un Kandra est revenu à Elendel avec des images qui semblent représenter les bandes, ainsi que des écrits dans une langue que personne ne peut lire. Waxillium Ladrian est recruté pour se rendre au sud de la ville de New Seran pour enquêter. En chemin, il découvre des indices qui dévoilent les véritables objectifs de son oncle Edwarn et de l’organisation de l’ombre connue sous le nom The Set.

Avis : J’avais pris beaucoup de plaisir à lire le tome précédent sans connaitre la série originale et j’étais curieuse de découvrir ce que Brandon Sanderson allait nous présenter une nouvelle fois. Il faut dire que cet auteur a un talent indéniable pour nous plonger dans ses histoires et nous garder en haleine tout au long des chapitres.

J’ai trouvé intéressant de pouvoir découvrir au tout début du volume, un bout du passé de Wax et de voir finalement ce qu’il avait traversé pour ainsi le comprendre un peu plus. Nous retrouvons bien vite le présent et bien sûr tous les personnages que nous connaissons pour une nouvelle aventure et avant tout le mariage de Wax et Steris. Vous vous doutez bien évidemment que rien ne se passera comme prévu. D’ailleurs c’est à ce moment-là qu’un Kandra se présente à eux et désire engager Wax pour l’aider dans une nouvelle investigation. Tous nos amis, Steris, Wax, Wayne, Marasi se mettent donc en chemin vers Seran pour essayer de comprendre ce qu’il se passe mais notre héros a un intérêt tout particulier pour cette enquête quand il apprend que sa sœur et son oncle sont impliqués.

J’ai vraiment pris beaucoup de plaisir une fois encore à suivre nos héros et leurs aventures. Steris est notamment le personnage que j’ai le plus apprécié. C’est toujours très intéressant de la voir s’ouvrir au monde de Wax et essayer finalement d’en faire partie aussi. Ses listes de toutes les catastrophes possibles pouvant arriver sont toujours très drôles de même que sa prévoyance par rapport aux conséquences de chacune d’entre elles. C’est vraiment un personnage auquel on s’attache particulièrement et qu’on aime voir évoluer au cours des chapitres et avec Wax. C’est d’ailleurs assez touchant de voir qu’ils créent ensemble quelque chose de différent que ce qu’ils avaient au départ.

Pour ce qui est de l’investigation, je m’attendais à certains revirements de situation mais c’était tout de même très intéressant de découvrir toute l’avancée de l’histoire et de voir ce que l’auteur allait nous réserver. Je ne vais pas en dire plus pour ne pas trop vous spoiler mais en tout cas c’était un nouveau très joli roman et je suis une fois de plus impatiente de pouvoir me plonger dans la suite et en découvrir toujours plus ! Comme toujours Brandon Sanderson ne déçoit pas !
