Black Night by Christina Henry (VO)

Black Wings, Book 2

Synopsis : Madeline Black is an Agent of death, meaning she escorts the souls of people who have died to the afterlife. Of course, not everyone is happy to see her…

If obstinate dead people were all that Maddy had to worry about, life would be much easier. But the best-laid plans of Agents and fallen angels often go awry. Deaths are occurring contrary to the natural order, Maddy’s being stalked by foes inside and outside of her family, and her two loves-her bodyguard, Gabriel, and her doughnut-loving gargoyle, Beezle-have disappeared. But because Maddy is Lucifer’s granddaughter, things are expected of her, things like delicate diplomatic missions to other realms.

Review : I really loved this book, it was even better than the first one. Madeline has to accept what she is, and it’s not always easy with her relatives. She would like to have a normal life, even if she is a death agent. But Lucifer isn’t going to accept this. In this volume, she’s been through quite a lot. Between Gabriel’s disappearance, Nathaniel’s arrival, or even her new mission… She won’t have time for herself. However, Beezle will always be here to help her, this little bad-tempered gargoyle but that we can only love.

I really liked to see Madeline evolving in her life. She understands what she can or can’t do, now that she is dedicated for important things. She understands that she has no choices and tries to adapt herself to all the requirements.
It was surprising to see Nathaniel, I really liked to learn more about him. He is so determined to marry Maddy, although he doesn’t even know her. Anyway, our feelings about him change all along the story. He irritates us, then we like him for hating after that, and finally we feel sorry for him. Indeed, we can see for the first time a more human personality and we understand that Maddy isn’t the only one who has to marry a person that she doesn’t truly love. However, we can see that Nathaniel likes more our heroine than we could believe. But I’m always intrigued about him, for example when he gets a weird phone call in the fairy court.

I think that after the first book where Gabriel was always present, it was a good idea to make him disappear a little of the story. So we can truly see Maddy’s feelings about him. She will have to stop to count on him all the time, and so count on herself a little more. And therefore, to evolve and become independent, even if her only obsession is to find him.

This novel is based a lot on politics, but it was very interesting. Indeed, a big part of the story happens in the Fairy court and the social etiquette is very important. Of course, Maddy doesn’t know how to be discreet. When Nathaniel gets involve, Gabriel or even the wolves, time’s running out.
It was very intriguing to meet the werewolves. We don’t learn a lot about them but I’m sure we will see them in the next books.

Lucifer plays a dangerous game with Maddy. I can’t wait to learn more about it, and to know what he will do know, especially after this end. He is a great manipulative person whom we can’t turn down. Could Maddy rise up against him?

I can’t wait to read the third book !

  1. I haven’t read the first book yet, but after reading your review and seeing the glowing five stars you gave to this sequel, I definitely want to! It sounds so good! Agent of death? How more interesting can you get? x)

    Awesome review, Melliane! 🙂

  2. @Melissa : I hope you will like it too! Thanks for stopping by !

@Mimi Valentine : I really like this one ! I know I don’t have a post for the first one… I’ve read it a long time ago, but it was nice too. If I can I will try to do it. I hope you will like it. In this book, there is less “Agent of death” job but so much happen ! Thanks !

  3. Sometimes I want subtle stories where people’s motives aren’t well known, and I think this story leans towards that. I haven’t heard of this series but I’ll check it out now.

P.S. Thanks for stopping by my blog 🙂
