Dead on the Delta by Stacey Jay (VO)

Série Annabelle Lee, Book 1

Synopsis : Once upon a time, fairies were the stuff of bedtime stories and sweet dreams. Then came the mutations, and the dreams became nightmares. Mosquito-size fairies now indulge their taste for human blood—and for most humans, a fairy bite means insanity or death. Luckily, Annabelle Lee isn’t most humans. The hard-drinking, smart-mouthed, bicycle-riding redhead is immune to fairy venom, and able to do the dirty work most humans can’t. Including helping law enforcement— and Cane Cooper, the bayou’s sexiest detective—collect evidence when a body is discovered outside the fairy-proof barricades of her Louisiana town.

But Annabelle isn’t equipped to deal with the murder of a sixyear- old girl or a former lover-turned-FBI snob taking an interest in the case. Suddenly her already bumpy relationship with Cane turns even rockier, and even the most trust-worthy friends become suspects. Annabelle’s life is imploding: between relationship drama, a heartbreaking murder investigation, Breeze-crazed drug runners, and a few too many rum and Cokes, Annabelle is a woman on the run—from her past, toward her future, and into the arms of a darkness waiting just for her. . . .

Review : As soon as I saw this beautiful cover, I wanted to read this book ! It was a good idea because the story was really great too !

The novel starts with the murder of a young girl we don’t know anything about. Annabelle doesn’t use to deal with this kind of stuff, but she has to search any evidences to help the police. The corpse, found in the bayou, she is the only one who can do that, many carnivores fairies live here.  As she is immunized, she would like to help as she can. In a relationship with Cane for one year, she realizes it’s now too serious between them. She doesn’t want a real relationship. And when her ex, Hitch arrives in town, it becomes more complicated. But even it’s not her duty, Annabelle wants to find the murderer.

I really like this new fairies concept. It’s uncommon to find them like these in books : they live during the night, they feed from humans and are very dangerous ! That’s why we can have an original story, with new ideas. Annabelle is a young woman, alcoholic despite of the fact she doesn’t accept that. She is very determined even if it’s very dangerous. However she is too sensitive and naive. I was very curious about Hitch and I wanted to see if Annabelle would tell him the truth about their past, to see his reaction.

I was aware about the murderer before the end of the book, so it wasn’t a surprise, but the reason was really weird and unexpected. I’m very curious to know about the mutations in the Bayou, to learn how it will affect Annabelle now. And i would like to know a little more about these men who can disappear when they want to.
