A Job From Hell by Jayde Scott (VO)

Ancient Legends, Book 1

Synopsis : In a world of love bonds, rituals, dark magic, ancient enemies and immortals, nothing is as it seems and no one can be trusted.

Seventeen-year-old Amber enters the paranormal world by chance when her brother, Dallas, sets her up with a summer job in Scotland. Dallas has spied something in the woods he thinks could make them rich beyond their wildest dreams. But instead of finding riches, Amber unknowingly enters a paranormal race—and promptly wins the first prize—a prize for which many would kill. Soon, she discovers her new boss, Aidan, didn’t employ her for her astounding housekeeping skills and he isn’t who he claims to be either.

As the dark forces slowly conspire against Amber, her naivety and love for Aidan catapults her into a calamitous series of otherworldly events. With every immortal creature hunting for her, whom can she trust with her life?

Review : I confess I don’t really know where to start. It’s a Young Adult book, but I’ve to say it wasn’t the feeling I had all along the book. Indeed, I was very surprised when I learned how old our heroine Calla was : seventeen-year-old. Maybe it’s just the case for me, but I thought she was older with her attitude and her nature. Indeed, it’s a young girl very different from the ones we find in this kinf of books. She is independent, mature, and she works in this first novel in a manor as a housekeeper (a job sooo not for her). It wasn’t inconvenient but I confess that I was a little trouble by that in the beginning. Otherwise I really like this character! Indeed, even in the worst situations she has a great sense of humor and we can only enjoy it, anyway I just love it! Calla is funny, thoughtful and independent, I really like her confidence and her open minded. However, I find it’s quite funny that she always agrees with her brother even when it’s really stupid.

We discover little by little a mysterious character : Aidan. We know from the start his little dark secret so it’s not a surprise when Amber learns about it. Kieran, his brother completes him perfectly with his bad boy and flirty nature. It’s always funny to see them evolve together, they’re so different and in the same time very close. I hope that in the others books we’ll learn a little more about Cassandra, daughter of Lucifer, this young woman has a hot temper! I really like her, she is vivid and always honest with everyone.
The story is very original, it presents us a very different universe, mixing a new species we don’t know anything about : The Shadows. I confess I was very intrigued by these ones. I think it’s very interesting to discover something new and to try to understand this people. It’s true I don’t understand everything about them but their existence and their world are fascinating.
We’re curious all along the book about the new capacity of Calla and about the consequences on the people around her.
The end was a little difficult to me, it finishes really fast. I confess that maybe it misses something maybe one page or two more to really complete the last events.
To conclude it was a nice story and I surely will read the sequel.

  1. Ohhh, I love the sound of this one! And I love that it’s set in Scotland because I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that had been before! 🙂

Plus, The Shadows? Colour me intrigued! It all sounds wicked cool!

Awesome review, Melliane! Even though the main character didn’t seem her age, I’m glad you enjoyed this book! I think I’ll have to pick this one up and judge it myself! 🙂

  2. @ Mimi Valentine : It’s really intriguing, and surely a nice place. I would be curious to read your opinion.

@ Melissa : It’s an interesting book, it’s just some little details that bother me. I think I’ll see too how it will go in the sequel.

  3. Calla’s independent nature sounds great. I love it when a book kind of crosses the boundaries between YA and Adult. Keeps things interesting.

Thanks for the review of this one, Melliane. I hadn’t heard of it before, but now it’s on my radar. 🙂

    P.S. Love the new look!
