Nightshine by Lynn Viehl (VO)

Kyndred, Book 4

Synopsis: When San Francisco paramedic Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Marena stops to help at the scene of an accident, she never imagines she’ll wind up trapped on a Mexican island, with orders to procreate with powerful Takyn Samuel Taske.  In her mind, he’s got two strikes against him: He knows about her secret nighttime telepathic ability and he’s too wealthy to be trusted.

Samuel is psychic, but he’s never foreseen that he’ll fall for the woman he has been charged with protecting.  GenHance-the biotech company willing to do anything to acquire super-human DNA-is after them, and when Samuel discovers that his Takyn powers have abandoned him, Charlie’s gift is their only hope for survival …

Review: I don’t think I’ve ever started a series by reading the fourth book before the others. Therefore, it’s true that all along the story we wonder if we shouldn’t have known more things about the characters or about the events with the three other novels. I think it’s always a little different even if like a lot a Paranormal Romance books, each volume features some different characters.
This novel introduces us to Samuel and Charlotte, two Takin, who have some amazing powers. While Samuel can read the stories of the objects he touches, Charlotte can read minds but only at night. From the start they are so different, Charlie is a young, dynamic and determined woman who was raised in a quite poor family and who became a paramedic. On the other hand, Samuel is an antiquarian who always had what he wanted. But when they’re kidnapped together and left on an island with the order to sleep together every day and to not search a way to escape under the treat to be punished, Charlie and Samuel have to team up to find a way to be free.
Well, it’s true I think the relation between our two main characters has evolved a little too fast. Samuel falls immediately in love with Charlotte, and it’s always a little disturbing. Indeed, it’s easier to understand Charlie who stays a little longer alert, without thinking that everything will be beautiful. I really enjoyed the nature of this young woman because we can relate to her easily, more than to the others.
What can I say about the story? I think it was a really interesting mix of ideas. There are a lot of events I didn’t expect at all, mainly about the bad guy of the story. After that, it’s true there are some things I didn’t really understand either but I think it’s different when we read the other books. It’s also unfortunate because I would have loved to learn more about GenHance and about what they really want.
I also really enjoyed these little chapters that allow us to know more about the past of our heroine. It’s a pleasure to learn more about her and to understand how she became the person she is now.
It was an interesting volume, and the story is a quite fast read. I thought at the beginning that the plot was a little strange (about the procreating thing mainly) but we get into it little by little. I’m curious now to learn more about the Takyn and I think if I have the occasion to do so, I will the read the others with pleasure.

  1. I’ve never heard of this one before. It sounds really interesting! I like the idea of these two opposites coming together and having to fight this big organization that wants their DNA. I’ll definitely check it out (though I’ll probably start with the first in the series ;))Thanks for the great review,

  2. Hey~ that sounds like an interesting first, to start with the 4th, haha! I’ve never heard of this series at all either O_O Understanding and watching the character grow is always a nice thing for a book, even if it’s just a “fast” read for you 🙂 Nice review!

  3. LOL Mel, I remember accidentally reading a second book before the first one in a series and wondering the same thing too! x) But I’m glad you still enjoyed this book despite that! Even though it felt like the relationship developed a little too quickly, I LOVE the idea of a psychic not being able to predict falling in love with his protectee. The romantic in me is smiling! 😉

Really awesome review, Mel! Hopefully you enjoy the other books in the series just as much too, if not more! 🙂 <3

  4. I’m reading like the 5th book in a series w/o reading the others first now. LOL Welcome to the club! Sometimes it doesn’t work as a stand a lone but does make you curious about the other books. I think that is a win. I have been wanting to read this series and I’m glad that this book makes you want to read them too. Great review!
