Nightshifted by Cassie Alexander (VO)

Edie Spence, Book 1

Synopsis: Nursing school prepared Edie Spence for a lot of things. Burn victims? No problem. Severed limbs? Piece of cake. Vampires? No way in hell. But as the newest nurse on Y4, the secret ward hidden in the bowels of County Hospital, Edie has her hands full with every paranormal patient you can imagine—from vamps and were-things to zombies and beyond…

Edie’s just trying to learn the ropes so she can get through her latest shift unscathed.  But when a vampire servant turns to dust under her watch, all hell breaks loose. Now she’s haunted by the man’s dying words—Save Anna—and before she knows it, she’s on a mission to rescue some poor girl from the undead. Which involves crashing a vampire den, falling for a zombie, and fighting for her soul.
Grey’s Anatomy was never like this…

Review: I never had the opportunity to read a book taking place in a hospital environment but I have to say I really enjoyed this change. Cassie Alexander allows us to discover a new universe we don’t know anything about, an intriguing world featuring a lot of incredible creatures. I didn’t expect to discover so many and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed between Zombies, Vampires, Dragons and so many others.
Edie is a woman like no one else; she has to live in a world she doesn’t understand, trying to maintain composure in all circumstances and to save all the persons she can. Because, despite she was forced to accept this nurse job in this place so different, she likes a lot what she does. But her life is turned upside down when a vampire makes her save a young girl she doesn’t know anything about: Anna. But for that, she has to kill a vampire, a fact that will ruin her life quite fast. She must now find Anna who ran away after these events and she has to face the vampire court. But they want only one thing: to charge her with murder. Our heroine tries to stay cool but it’s really not easy as she must go through a lot of things in the same time.
Hopefully, she will have some good allies, some persons she didn’t expect in the beginning and who will help her as much as they can. We stay intrigued by each character because it’s difficult to really understand who they are or what they really want. It’s mainly the case for Meaty, the Edie’s boss, who will help her more than we would have thought in the beginning. We try to understand the Asher and Ti’s motivations. It’s quite complicated to have an opinion about them, they are so mysterious but it’s true I’m quite curious to learn more about them both.
I asked myself a lot of questions about the “Shadows”. The author introduces us to a new creature we haven’t met yet before. They are very interesting and it’s true we don’t really understand what they are and what they want.
The plot was really exciting and I’m curious to learn more with the second volume. We get into the story from the start and it’s true it’s difficult to not finish it at once, because I have to say it’s a quite fast read as we want to know everything. It’s therefore a great surprise and it was a real pleasure to read it.

    • I think it’s an interesting place, I was also curious for that reason. Yes she is! well is quite unlucky as well lol but it’s a nice book. I hope you’ll like it as well if you give it a try!

  1. It’s so funny that you’re writing a review for this book now because I JUST heard about this book today! x) I don’t think I’ve ever read a supernatural book (or any book, really) that was set in a hospital either, but there’s a first for everything, right? Especially since it has vamps, zombies, and DRAGONS! 😀

    Awesome review, Mel! <3 🙂

    • lol we’re connected! I don’t think either it’s so nice, mainly when I was a student in medecine for two years. I love to have the fact we had some dragons, it’s not very common in books! Thanks mimi.

  2. You’re right, there aren’t many books based in hospitals! I’m glad you liked this as I have in on pre-order and I’m looking forward to reading it…sounds a little like ER crossed with supernatural! 🙂

  3. You know, I can’t remember the last book I read that took place in a hospital. Well, there was this one that mentioned a medical facility a few times. LOL

I love it when authors get creative and introduce new creatures. The ones included here sound really interesting. I’ve seen the book cover for this book around, but haven’t read too many reviews for it. Looks like it’s a gem though.

    • I confess I haven’t seen another review but I think it will be more the case when it’ll be released next month. I always love the new ideas as well, always so interesting! well it’s nice.

  4. Zombies, vampires and dragons all in a hosptial environment? Sounds vast and intriguing! I’ve only ever read one book that predominantly features a hospital (Vicious Grace) but I loved the atmosphere that could be created in such an environment. The book sounds like a promising start to a new series! Hop, onto the TBR it goes!

    • AAAh by Linda Robertson? if it is I have the first book. Yeah I really enjoyed to have the book in this place, well some events there. I hope you’ll like it when you’ll read it!
