Sparks Fly by Katie Macalister

Light Dragons, Book 3

Synopsis: Hell hath no fury like a ticked-off dragon…

Ysolde de Bouchier has a lot on her plate, which isn’t unusual considering her Light Dragon mate Baltic is still at odds with just about everyone, starting with his former guard Thala and her outlaw posse, right down to his dragon god father. Ysolde herself fairs no better, since the First Dragon has her in his sights as well, demanding that she right past wrongs…and her time to do that is quickly running out.

With the help of some familiar friends, Ysolde sets into motion an elaborate plan that will have repercussions throughout the mortal and immortal worlds. But when a member of her family is held hostage, no one is safe from the fire of her rage.

Review : Looking at the cover, I was convinced that this novel was a pure and simple paranormal romance story. But what a surprise, this is not the case at all. I must say that I was greatly surprised; I would have not even ranked it in this genre. It’s rather a mix of urban fantasy and paranormal romance with a nice touch of humor. It’s for me the perfect genre. I didn’t know Katie Macalister before, but this book really made me want to learn more about the others now and I hope I could quickly read the 2 first volumes of the series, as they follow the rest of the life of our heroine. The author tells us at the start of the book that she does everything she can so the reader is able to read her books even if in disorder, and she also leaves a glossary at the end of the novel to explain who the characters are. And she was right, once I understood who they were, I had no problems to immerse myself in this third volume of adventures of Ysolde de Bouchier.

Many things happen in this novel. We follow our heroine Isolde, the Baltic’s lover, a very, very stubborn dragon (yes, really). While he only wants to do what he wants, his wife tries to be accepted by others and to arrange everything, although it doesn’t work as well as she would have liked (yes, because his mate is determined to change her plans). And without the consent of Baltic, she has made promises to everyone and expects to hold them whatever happens. But when Thala or her ex-husband gets involved and kidnap her son or when they try to kell them, nothing is going well! Then everyone gets involved in the story even if Baltic would have prefered to fix everything alone. In addition to this, the first dragon wants Ysolde to accomplishe her goal and to give back the honor of her husband, although she doesn’t even understand what he really means before the end of the novel.

I loved all the characters, they all have something unique and made me laugh several times. Between Brom, the son of Isolde, who is the smarter boy of 9 years old I’ve ever seen, or Constantine, who wants his place in the world even if he is only a spirit. And that means challenging those who took his place and wanting to fight to regain his past glory. And since no ones agree with him, he does it all the time (yes, really, throughout the book)! I think someone would have killed him if he was not already dead, just to show him how much he is annoying. But without him it would not have been the same either. But it’s not just that because he wants to kill Baltic as well and if possible, recover Ysolde as his mate. This is the only thing he is always saying when he opens his mouth. Our heroine carries the weight of the whole world on her shoulders and tries to do the best she can, even if it means she must make some promises in the back of her husband with all the people he doesn’t like. Things she knows, of course, will totally piss him of. Well I must say that he is often unhappy and determined to live quietly with only Ysolde and Brom without anyone else. And what if his father, the first great dragon wants something? Well too bad, he doesn’t care about that either. There are so many other characters that I loved but I’ll let you discover as they are really worth it. I enjoyed each of them and it was a great pleasure to discover them all.

This book is a perfect mix of non-stop action, love, even if it is not what is important here and lots of humor. I can’t wait to see everyone again to know what will happen with Thala. A very good book and I am now curious to discover more novels by Katie Macalister.

  1. Hmmm, I’ve never heard of this series before but they sound really interesting! The dragon tattoo on the cover looks really cool too. I should definitely check this book out!
