Secrets of the Demon by Diana Rowland

Kara Gillian, Book 3

Synopsis: Homicide detective Kara Gillian has a special talent: she can sense the “arcane” in our world, and there’s quite a bit of it, even in Beaulac, Louisiana. She’s also a summoner of demons, and works on a task force that deals with supernatural crimes. Her partners are attractive and smart FBI agents, but they’re not summoners, and they’re not telling Kara why they are on this special force with her.

TO make things worse, Kara has pledged herself to one of the most powerful of demons-a Demon Lord-who helped save her partner’s life, but now expects things in return. Meanwhile, she’s trying to solve a string of murders that are somehow tied together by money, sex, rock music and…mud. But how can she concentrate on the case when she’s not even sure who-or what-her partners are?

Review: Kara Gillian is a series that I really enjoy with the strong presence of the police investigations combining with many paranormal elements. It’s true, I admit, I am also very curious whenever about her personal relationships with Ryan or Rhyzkahl. Yes, because these two men have both something more despite my heart always balances for the demon. Why is that? I have no idea, maybe because he seems more dangerous and much more honest in his choice than Ryan? It’s possible.

What about the story? At the concert of a new famous singer, a golem made of mud attacks our young celebrity who is still alive thanks to the speed of our heroine who rescues her as fast as she can. As she has never been confronted to such a creature, it is difficult for her to understand what is happening or how to get rid of it. But now that she is part of a new paranormal team, she knows that there are always people who can help her. But if it was only that, someone apparently seeks to invoke her in the plain of the demons and she doesn’t even know the reason. We have here a big investigation and many new information we expected since the first volume.

Yes, this book is full of revelations and I was completely surprised by some of them. No … we still do not know what Rhyzkahl wants from our heroine and I must say that I am becoming increasingly curious about the reasons. I would like to know if he really appreciates her and the reason of all the things he hides. But this demon is enigmatic and it is also what makes him what he is. I think it’s unfortunate that we don’t see him a lot in the story because I appreciate each of his meetings. Regarding Ryan, we learn a lot of things about him as well, although some are only deductions from Kara, but what a surprise! The novel ends up on a very apotheosis and I was so happy to know who he really was just like Zack. We were introduced to a new character who I think will be present in the future novels. I really enjoyed this protagonist and I look forward to learning more now.

I didn’t expect the outcome of the story, nor the plot and as always Diana Rowland had many very good ideas here, we’re completely lost throughout the novel to have the truth at the end of the story. To conclude, it’s a new very good book although I sometimes had some problems with the turns of some sentences and I’m curious to see how the original version (in English) is to see the differences with the French translations.

  1. I have to confess I was happy but suprised with some of the revelations in this book – I really like Ryan, as I can’t seem to trust the demon Rhyzkahl!! I love that you’re reading teh whole series close together – I should do that more often!! 🙂

  2. Hey! We both have a Roland book on our sites today! Great minds and all… 😉

I so need to get this series. I also love that you read in 2 languages. I would be curious as to how you felt about the French translation does compare to the english version. Cool!
