The Trouble with Fate by Leigh Evans

Mystwalker, Book 1

Synopsis: My name is Hedi Peacock and I have a secret. I’m not human, and I have the pointy Fae ears and Were inner-bitch to prove it. As fairy tales go, my childhood was damn near perfect, all fur and magic until a werewolf killed my father and the Fae executed my mother. I’ve never forgiven either side. Especially Robson Trowbridge. He was a part-time werewolf, a full-time bastard, and the first and only boy I ever loved. That is, until he became the prime suspect in my father’s death…

Today I’m a half-breed barista working at a fancy coffee house, living with my loopy Aunt Lou and a temperamental amulet named Merry, and wondering where in the world I’m going in life. A pretty normal existence, considering. But when a pack of Weres decides to kidnap my aunt and force me to steal another amulet, the only one who can help me is the last person I ever thought I’d turn to: Robson Trowbridge. And he’s as annoyingly beautiful as I remember. That’s the trouble with fate: Sometimes it barks. Other times it bites. And the rest of the time it just breaks your heart.
Again…

Review: I was quite intrigued by this book when I read the summary for the first time. I love books about the Faes, so Fae mixing with werewolves seemed perfect for me. But this book is far from what I expected initially. I immediately had some difficulties to get into the story … I do not know why but we fall directly into the novel without really understanding what is happening and I had the impression of being a little lost. It took me a little while to understand what was happening.

Hedi Peacock is a young woman quite interesting because of her origins. Indeed half Fae, half werewolf, we wonder what will differentiate her from others. However, she lives a quite normal life with her aunt and a strange amulet until some werewolves come and try to steal her necklace while kidnapping her aunt. I must say that our heroine is turned upside down by this event, and the only way to get back her family member is to steal another amulet. Problem? Yes, because we have a big one here, this amulet belongs to Trowbridge, the werewolf she holds responsible for the murder of her parents. But getting back this object is much more complicated than she had expected and it will lead her in a terrible story. Who could have predicted at the outset that an alliance between these two characters would be so colorful? It was pretty funny to follow both.

I immediately appreciated Trowbridge, he is grumpy and loner, bothered by the little Hedi. I must say that she is pretty boring when she wants to! Our heroine is quite determined in her actions and we wonder what she is capable of. But she does not, however, think about the consequences of her acts which sometimes seems detrimental. Her nature is fascinating to discover. Indeed, her Fae’s nature has something different and I was curious to learn more about it. She has a nice gift and we do not understand all the ramifications, I’m therefore curious to see what will happen.

Regarding the story, I thought it was pretty interesting but I had some problems too. There are some lengths and it is true that I had several times skipped a few paragraphs. There are also many points that I did not quite understand and it disturbed me a little in my reading. I do not know if it’s personal and I wondered if I was the only one with that feeling. After half of the book, however, I was much more interested in the story and I enjoyed the evolution of their relationship, as well as the end that the author presents us. We find a lot of information that we had no idea about and it was nice to be surprised.

This book is a nice start and I’m curious to see what will result now. Major events happen at the end of the story, something interesting for the sequel.
