The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

Blood of Eden, Book 2

Synopsis: Allison Sekemoto has vowed to rescue her creator, Kanin, who is being held hostage and tortured by the psychotic vampire Sarren. The call of blood leads her back to the beginning—New Covington and the Fringe, and a vampire prince who wants her dead yet may become her wary ally.

Even as Allie faces shocking revelations and heartbreak like she’s never known, a new strain of the Red Lung virus that decimated humanity is rising to threaten human and vampire alike.

Review: Julie Kagawa never disappoints and I was really curious to finally read more of the adventures of Allison Sekemoto. I must say that the end was more than frustrating and I was curious to see her rescue for Kanin.

We thus find at the beginning of the novel our young heroine in search of her creator, reliving every night what he is enduring, strengthening each time a little more her determination to save him whatever the costs. What she does not expect is certainly to come to face with her “brother” Jackal who is waiting for her and kindly offers an interesting contract. It is a strange alliance, but he can help her to find Kanin if she also helps him to find the cure he seeks. But their quest will bring them back to the beginnings of the Allie’s former life and to the people from her past.

I was completely surprised by Jackal in this novel, I did not really expect such a turnaround. We had met him in the first volume and I admit that this is a character I immediately disliked. But my feeling has changed completely in this novel. Yes he is very frustrating and annoying especially in his dialogues and actions, but I think it’s just his way of being himself. However, he has other things for himself and despite his attitude, he knows what he has to do, he knows what is right. It was pretty amazing also. He tries to explain to Allie that vampires are monsters and by her conduct he thinks she is rather naive, but I think he understands her too. He has been my great surprise in this book. Of course we also have our dear Allie, who is obsessed with her quest. She only wants to find the one who had helped her, but she did not expect that this mission would lead her on such paths, including to a new kind of virus that could kill them all.

I will not reveal much, because it would be very easy to tell you everything there is to know but it was still a very good book and it was a pleasure to be able to follow such a new adventure. We have many revelations and I really enjoyed having Kanin again. I think I missed him in the first novel and it was nice to rediscover him here. It is a new book full of surprises, mysteries and alliances we don’t expect. And it is true that now that I’ve finished it I’m really curious to see what will happen in the third book!

  1. Jackal was quite a surprise, but he was far from the only one. I love the Blood of Eden series, Allie is a great heroine, and all the other characters feel very ‘real’ as well.

    Great review, Melliane.
