Can you present you in a few words?

I’m a failed screenwriter turned novelist who lives in an old farmhouse in the middle of nowhere.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

In high school we used to have a guest teacher who taught poetry. I wasn’t interested in writing poetry, so I struck a deal with Mr. Alwan and he let me write short stories instead. From there, I moved on to plays. I liked the feeling of getting lost in a story and having complete control over this world I created. In life you’re at the mercy of everything around you. When you write, it’s all under your purview.

How would you describe the Spellmans series?

The Spellman series are comedic novels about a family of private investigators. They nod at the mystery genre, but ultimately they’re not mysteries; they’re simply novels about the evolution of a family.

So Izzy, whered she come from?

I had seen too many quirky and adorable women in mainstream fiction. I wanted to write a character who was funny, but deeply flawed and human enough that sometimes she became unlikable. Like all of us.

How did you end up writing with a family like that?

I need a family that could match wits with Izzy. She’s powerful character and needed a family that she wouldn’t overshadow. As far as their particular quirks, those came to me rather quickly when I first envisioned the story. I imagined characters who would help form Isabel’s personality and the family arose from that consideration.

If you could meet any characters in your books, who would it be and why?

Uncle Ray because it’s been a long time since we’ve hung out.

Is there a character more difficult than the others to write?

Robbie Gruber (the computer consultant) can be difficult because I’m not a computer expert. I have consult my cousin, a computer guy, for that particular lingo.

Whats the hardest scene for you to write?

Too many to list. I found the latest book THE LAST WORD to be one of the more difficult ones and many scenes were changed or rewritten again and again.

Could you describe your average day and writing practices?

There is no average day. When I’m under deadline, I usually use a word quota to make sure I get enough writing done an I often quit when I’ve met the quota. And most writing gets done in the morning. I’m only a night owl if I’m at a bar.

Do you have a favorite author? Or a favorite book?

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov is my favorite book. These days it would be impossible to pick a favorite novelist. There are many I read constantly. Kate Atkinson, Laura Lippman, Megan Abbott,

Your books are released in France, do you see yourself meeting your French fans one day?

I hope so.

The Spellmans, Book 6

Synopsis: Isabel Spellman is used to being followed, extorted, and questioned—all occupational hazards of working at her family’s firm, Spellman Investigations. Her little sister, Rae, once tailed Izzy for weeks on end to discover the identity of her boyfriend. Her mother, Olivia, once blackmailed Izzy with photographic evidence of Prom Night 1994. It seemed that the Spellmans would lay off after Izzy was fired for breaching client confidentiality, but then Izzy avenged her dismissal by staging a hostile takeover of the company. She should have known better than to think she could put such shenanigans behind her.

In The Last Word, Izzy’s troubles are just beginning. After her hostile takeover of Spellman Investigations, Izzy’s parents simply go on strike. Her sister, Rae, comes back into the family business with questionable motivations. Her other employees seem to be coping with anxiety disorders, and she has no idea how to pay the bills. However, her worst threat comes from someone who is no relation. Within months of assuming control of the business, Izzy is accused of embezzling from a former client, the ridiculously wealthy Mr. Slayter, who happens to have Alzheimer’s, which Izzy and he are diligently trying to keep under wraps. Not only is Slayter’s business and reputation on the line, but if Izzy gets indicted for embezzlement, she’ll lose everything—her business, her license, and her family’s livelihood. Is this the end of Izzy Spellman, PI? The answer makes The Last Word, hands down, the most thrilling book in this bestselling, award-nominated series.

    A bientôt

  2. Izzy is hands-down my favorite character in any book/series, ever. My mom introduced me to the Spellman books a couple of years ago, and after I’d read the first three books, she said that Izzy reminds her of me. I’ve never been so conflicted as to whether to feel honored or insulted.

Anyway, a new Spellman book coming out is always news I’m excited about for months. The latest was worth the wait, as usual! I’m definitely intrigued as to the direction it seems the next book(s) will take. (My only disappointment will be if Christina Moore doesn’t narrate the rest of the books. In addition to reading print copies of the Spellman books first, I also have them in audiobook format and have listened to them an embarrassingly large number of times while falling asleep, on my way to family functions, etc. For me, she is the voice of the Spellman clan, and hearing Rae voiced by someone else- even just in those few voice memos during The Last Word- was jarring and inexplicably sad.)
