Can you present you in a few words?

Linda Grimes, smart-ass writer of light urban fantasy.

How would you describe the In a Fix series?

One fast-paced, sexy romp after another!

So Ciel, where’d she come from?

If you mean Ciel the person, she was conceived on a very special trip her parents took to Paris, and born in NYC.

If you mean where inside my head the character of Ciel comes from…well, who can really say? She just poked her way into my consciousness (after I saw her name on a vanity license plate) and started talking to me.

If you could, would you change places with any of your characters?

Hmm…I wouldn’t mind standing in for Ciel during a few key scenes with Billy or Mark. 😉

List 5 characters from your books and do word associations.

Ciel: determined

Billy: charming

Mark: honorable

Molly: effervescent

What is the most memorable moment (good, bad, or other) you have had in your life as an author?

I was making hard-boiled eggs, using an egg cooker, when I got THE call from my agent. The timer went off just as Michelle (Michelle Wolfson, of Wolfson Literary) told me she’d sold the first two books of my series to Tor. I was so excited that I tried to take the lid off the egg cooker one-handed, and burned the heck out of my fingers. I’m sure Michelle thought my shrieks were purely from excitement—and they mostly were. I didn’t even mind the blisters that took more than a week to heal. The pain was a reminder of one of the most exciting moments of my life.

When she called to tell me the next two books had sold, it didn’t hurt nearly as much, probably because I was nowhere near a kitchen.

When you sit down and write do you know how the story will end or do you just let the pen take you?

I never know exactly how a story will end until I get there. I have vague idea of where I’d ultimately like to wind up, but the story is like an untrained Rottweiler puppy on a leash, dragging me along while I try to retain a modicum of control.

What’s the hardest scene for you to write?

One that was complicated to write was the “Come as You Aren’t Party” scene in Quick Fix. There’s a large cast of characters involved, many of them adaptors who are masquerading as other people. A lot is going on, some of which the reader isn’t aware of at the time, and it all has to make sense later. My brain was almost as pickled as poor Ciel’s after I was done writing that one! Though not for the same reason, of course.

How do you find your titles? Did you imagine them all when you started the series or do you brainstorm each time?

In a Fix just flowed naturally from the fact that Ciel is a “fixer” who suddenly finds herself in a predicament of her own. Quick Fix was more or less the same—Ciel thinks she’s just doing a quickie job (but of course it turns out to be more than she expects).

After I knew this was turning into a series, I started a list of titles containing the word “Fix,” just for continuity’s sake. When I start a new book, I wait to see if any of them strike a chord. The Big Fix worked for Book 3, the one I’m working on right now.

Who is your favorite kick ass heroine?

Oh, man. That’s a hard question! Would it be egotistical to say Ciel? Because, naturally enough, I’m quite fond of her. She’s kind of a beginner kick-ass—really just learning the ropes—but I’m confident she’ll find her way.

I love Joanna Archer from Vicki Petterrson’s Signs of the Zodiac series, too—that woman can truly kick ass. (Actually, that applies to both Joanna AND Vicki.)

What authors have been an influence for you? And have you read any books lately that you want to share with us or have you been too busy with writing to read?

Too many to list. I’m sure every author I’ve ever read has in some way influenced me. (Yes, even the awful ones—they show me what not to do. *grin*) But, yes, it is hard to find reading time these days. I wish I could get by on less sleep, so I’d have time to do everything, but alas. My brain goes on strike if I don’t get at least seven hours every night. Preferably eight.

Have you already other plans for future series? Or is it top secret?

Tor bought the next two Ciel Halligan books (hooray!), so we now know there’ll be at least four of those.

I’m also working a few other projects, both single titles. One is a paranormal suspense and the other a high stakes thriller. We’ll see if anything eventually comes of them. For now, I’m perfectly happy to spend the majority of my writing time playing with Ciel and her friends.

Thanks for having me on your blog again! I love coming to see you here. J

C’était assez difficile d’écrire la scène “Come as You Aren’t Party” de Quick Fix.

J’adore venir ici :).

Linda Grimes at RT 2013Bio: Linda Grimes is the author of Tor’s light urban fantasy series featuring aura adaptor Ciel Halligan. Her second book, QUICK FIX, will be released on August 20. Linda enjoys reading (anything, including cereal boxes, if desperate), an occasional cocktail (make it a martini or a Manhattan, and she’ll be a friend for life), camels (the animals, not the cigarettes, and only when they’re not spitting), and parentheses. You can find her on Twitter @linda_grimes, or visit her website at lindagrimes.com.

Quick Fix (In a Fix, 2) – Linda grimes

Synopsis: Ciel Halligan, an aura adaptor with a chameleon-like ability to step into the lives of her clients and fix their problems for them — as them — is working a job at the National Zoo with her boyfriend, Billy, and his ten-year-old sister, Molly. It’s supposed to be a quick fix, giving her time to decide if it’s wise to pursue the romantic relationship her charming scoundrel of a best friend wants, or if she should give Mark, the CIA spook she’s crushed on since hormones first rattled her pubescent brain, a chance to step up to the plate.

Molly has already begun to show signs of being an adaptor herself. She’s young for it, but she’s always been precocious, so it’s not impossible. What is impossible is her taking on the form of the baby orangutan she touches — adaptors can only project human auras. Until now, apparently. Worse, Molly is stuck in ape form. She can’t change herself back.

Escaping from the zoo with their new baby orang, Ciel and Billy head for NYC and the only person they know can help: Ciel’s brother James, a non-adaptor scientist who’s determined to crack the aura adaptor genetic code. But when Billy winds up in jail, accused of attempted murder, Ciel begins to suspect Molly’s unusual adapting ability is more than just a fluke. Who’s been experimenting on Molly, and what do they hope to gain? And will Ciel survive to find out?
