Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict by Laurie Viera Rigler

Jane Austen Addict, Book 2

Synopsis: Sassy, smart and suddenly single Courtney Stone is a typical modern LA girl. That is, until she wakes up one morning in Regency England in the body of Jane Mansfield. At first she thinks she must be dreaming – maybe she’s read all of Jane Austen’s books a few too many times – but as time goes on she finds there is a lot she needs to get to grips with: a new accent, a new body, a wicked new ‘mother’, and most excitingly, a new man in her life: the dashing, dishy Charles Edgeworth.

But is he a Darcy, a Wickham, or merely a confusing distraction? As Courtney trips through the social minefield of life in Jane Austen’s England she wonders: Will she ever get her twenty-first century, west-coast life back – and does she even want to?

Review: I was curious to read the second novel after discovering Courtney in the first one. I was eager to see how Jane would be able successfully adapt in a world she knows nothing about. And I was sure it would be colorful as the girl came from the 19th century, there are now many things to discover: electricity, cars, phones, and so much more. But even if I think this one was better than the first one, at the end of the story, I realized that I did not understand the end of the first book ( the two novels take place in parallel) and suddenly I was a little disappointed. I think only  understood what I actually wanted to understand.

We therefore meet Jane who is now as I said in the body of Courtney during our time. Knowing nothing of this century, it is very difficult for the woman to understand how everything works. No maids, free manners, and many novelties. It was a pleasure to see the young woman discovering the world and to watch her interact with others. It was always really quite funny to see that, because of course even her language is different and even at the end of the novel it is still quite difficult for her to speak like everyone. Yet she will also quickly be surrounded by her friends who help her, thinking she has amnesia due to a blow to her head. And among them, we meet two young women who are her friends forever, Deepa, a new friend and Wes of course, the young man who falls for her. Yet while she appreciates the boy quickly, there is also her ex-fiancé who is a real jerk but she knows that despite that, she could fell for him again. But, trying to restore order in her life, she finally decides what to do with Frank and perhaps to manage to seek clarification from Wes on the fact that he covered the ex- boyfriend while he was cheating on her.

It was a really cute story and while we are angry ( like everyone else ) about the abominable Frank, at the same time, we can also understand how the young woman may happen to succumb to him. And what about Wes? Ah this man… he has everything to be the perfect gentleman, we can only love him! He is there for her at any moment, to talk to her, to support her even if she is doing stupid things. It’s really quite touching to see them together. I also enjoyed Jane, despite her confusion, she really manages to put the Courtney’s life on track and it’s quite nice to see the changes. Yet as I said I understood the end of first book while discovering the end of this one and I was a little disappointed to see how everything was decided. I might have not chosen that … But other than that, it was a pleasant light romance.
