Darker Angels by M.L.N. Hanover

The Black Sun’s Daughter, Book 2

Synopsis: In the battle between good and evil, there’s no such thing as a fair fight.

When Jayné Heller’s uncle Eric died, she inherited a fortune beyond all her expectations — and a dangerous mission in a world she never knew existed. Reining in demons and supernatural foes is a formidable task, but thankfully Jayné has vast resources and loyal allies to rely on. She’ll need both to tackle a bodyswitching serial killer who’s taken up residence in New Orleans, a city rich in voodoo lore and dark magic.
Working alongside Karen Black, a highly confident and enigmatic ex-FBI agent, Jayné races to track down the demon’s next intended host. But the closer she gets, the more convinced she becomes that nothing in this beautiful, wounded city is exactly as it seems. When shocking secrets come to light, and jealousy and betrayal turn trusted friends into adversaries, Jayné will soon come face-to-face with an enemy that knows her all too well, and won’t rest until it has destroyed everything she loves most….

Review: I was a little hesitant to get into this second volume. In fact, I had a little trouble with the first one that I found rather flat and long but I was wondering if it would be the same for this one. It is true that since it was a first novel it is always difficult to make a strong impression. Or maybe it’s the French translation which is for something? It is always a bit tricky to know exactly the reason.

I was completely surprised by cons with this second volume. I think having read the two volumes the one after the other allowed me to really tell the difference between them. I even also immediately also chained with the third one (yes I know nothing can stop me).

Jayne is given a new mission, to go to New Orleans to help a former FBI agent who fights against the demons (I really love novels featuring this city as its history is always so fascinating ). So you can imagine, we have Voodoo here. I think it is an intriguing practice and I always love to learn a little more about it. Our group will be facing this time some new threats and demons they have never experienced before.

The plot is really well found, there are some pretty twists. It’s always nice to be sure of a few things for a part of the novel and to understand that the author finally had wandered us throughout the book to finally reveal us the truth. What bothered me, however, is that we understand many things before Jayne. And when I say that, I mean that there are facts so easy to understand and our heroine does not even begins to discern a bit of them. I wondered how it was possible! Really, there are thoughts that make us straight on the track, but then this is not the case for Jayne. Even at the end of the book. I still hoped that she would achieve all this in the third book because it makes her really naive. And when I thought it was finally finished with Aubrey, to my great relief, well, here we go again! Yay! Not bad I agree, but I do not know why I have so much trouble with this character. He’s very cute, everything is nice about him, also brave, but then I still do not understand how she manages to turn to him when two other men are really more interesting. But hey it’s true that these are just details, and I still hope (perhaps in vain) that she’ll realize what is good for her. There also may be another little thing to add. I hoped in this volume to understand a little better the origin of the Invisible College (same name in English?) because ultimately we do not know much about it, but I think it will not be this time. With luck it will be the case for the next book.

However, this is also a nice read and it’s true that I’m curious to see what will happen now be the following novel. We meet some exciting new characters and I hope we’ll have the opportunity to meet them again.

  1. YES! I LOVE books set in New Orleans, especially because of Voodoo and well, I’ll just read any with Voodoo, though you don’t get it much in YA, so I don’t get many, boo. 🙁 the Gods & Monsters series by Kelly Keaton is amazing though, and pretty sexy for YA). It sounds like you enjoyed it better than the first at least? Even if you still don’t get some of the characters actions yet but at least it’s made you want to continue it and see what happens next (though I do kind of ate those books that you’re not really sure of but You HAVE to read the next because you HAVE to know, haha.)

    • I just the books in the city as well, it’s always so interesting. And yes, you’re right Voodoo is YA isn’t easy to find but now I want to try the Kelly Keaton series! Yes it was a little better.

  2. This has a great cover! I love novels set in the heart of New Orleans, there is just something so magical and crazy about that city!

Glad you liked this one better than the first even if you still aren’t completely in love with it.

  3. That snake *shivers* I though it was scary then I saw French cover and well it’s not that scary 😀 I haven’t heard of this one but it sounds really good. Also it happens often that I realize many things before the character and somehow it always disappoints me as there is no surprise moment in there. Great review 🙂

  4. Good for you for sticking with it, and giving book 2 a go. I almost always try to give an author a second chance, except maybe the series I posted about today. LOL Anyway, another author to add to my list. Thanks, and happy Friday!

  5. I’ve always wanted to check these books out! I have read this author’s other fantasy/sci fi books, the ones he wrote under his name Daniel Abraham and co-authored under James S.A. Corey. They were awesome, I don’t know why I haven’t gotten around to the Black Sun’s Daughter books yet, I mean, I’ve enjoyed the author work and it’s a genre that’s right up my alley.

  6. YOu are a whole lot more dedicated than I am to still push forward with the next novel if you really didn’t fully enjoy the first. But hey least now you know after #2 that you do want to keep going afterall.

I like seeing your posts because I get to see the other covers other than just the US ones.

  7. I’m glad your experience with the first volume didn’t deter you from continuing on. I commend your patience and generosity. 😉 I can’t say the same for myself. Lol.

I hope this just gets better for you, Melliane.

  8. I’ve not heard of this one. Like the cover. I am reading a demon book now and digging it. Great review. Glad you decided to give the second book a read. I have read some awesome urban fantasy series where it took me to book 3 to really get into the series but was worth it in the end 😀

  9. I’m glad you stuck with the series and enjoyed book two even more. I’ve had the first book on my shelf and picked it up because I loved the sound of its setting, the Voodoo, and magic. Looks like I need to pull that boo out and check it out some more! 🙂

  10. And this is why, if I’m not completely sure about a series, I try to wait until there are several installments before starting it. 9 times out of 10 these days, if the first book doesn’t blow me away, and I don’t have book 2 at the ready, it never gets read. I’m glad you liked the new characters in this one, and I’m definitely curious about this series now. Thanks for sharing, Melliane!

  11. Woah voodoooooo! I’ve never heard of this series, unfortunately, but fantastic review for it! I love how you have such hope for the character to realize what’s good for her in time haha! <3 Also very generous of you to give the second book a chance; seems many of us (myself included) wouldn't have done that. Glad that you still liked it and hope the third book goes well too 🙂 Vivian
