Fury of Fire by Coreene Callahan

Dragonfury, Book 1

Synopsis : A clandestine race of half-dragon, half-humans known as dragon-shifters lives among us.

Bastian, leader of the Nightfury dragon clan, is sworn to protect humankind at all costs. For him, honor and duty always come first. When the clan dictates he take a human mate to sire a son, he falters, aware that for a human to birth a dragon-shifter she must die. Myst, the woman given into his care, is the most extraordinary he’s ever met, and though he can’t bear the thought of harming her, he is bound by duty.

Myst loves her life in the human world, but Bastian has captured her heart in an instant of electric connection. But Bastian and his warriors are in the middle of a deadly battle with the Razorback dragon-shifters, intent on killing every Nightfury clan member—and the humans they protect—the fate of their world and ours hangs in the balance.

Review: I was anxious about the novel because the reviews I’ve seen were quite divided. But I admit that the mention of dragons immediately seduced me and I was very curious to see how the story would be in the end. It’s true that it’s not a very original one, but I enjoyed the track and learning more about the characters.

We discover Myst at the beginning of the novel, a nurse who is helping her friend who is dying on the floor of her kitchen while giving birth to her child. Unable to save her, Myst manages to recover the healthy child, but that’s where the problems begin. Oh yes, because this child is very special because he is in fact the result of a human and a dragon. And it seems that everyone wants to retrieve him. Yet our heroine is determined to protect him in every way possible. However, the young woman will end very quickly under the thumb of Bastian, a dragon who has developed a strong bond with her. While she would like to get away with the child, she soon realizes that this is not possible. And behind it all, Bastian hopes that he can create something with this woman, knowing that this could end very badly for Myst.

I liked both characters. Bastian finds himself in a situation he has never known and it’s very difficult for him to manage that. He wants Myst, he wants to make her happy and protect her and this is something new for him. He does not really know how to behave with her. I must say that the young woman doesn’t hesitate to tell her mind. Oh yes, because she did not let go of things and is determined to do what she wants in her capabilities. I liked her frank talking and her desire to protect this child. They both form an explosive couple and it was nice to follow them both.

As I said the story is not really original, but it’s not a concern. By cons I’m a little disappointed that we didn’t go to the end of the tracks started in this first volume. I did not expect for such a purpose that ultimately does not solve much. I wanted to know what would happen to Myst, knowing whether the things they heard were true, understanding what was going to happen with the baby, but eventually these questions are quite outstanding.

But in any case it was a nice first novel and I would read the following with pleasure.

  1. I keep meaning to give Coreene Callahan’s Dragonfury series a try because us Canadians need to stick together ya know! I’m just kinda sick of paranormal romance at the moment, and the lack of originality doesn’t exactly help. Someday!

  2. I haven’t read many with dragons (though I’m not too keen about them anyway) but shame it’s not exactly original or with any new twists, but still if you enjoyed it despite all of that, sounds pretty middle ground territory, then that’s okay. 🙂

  3. I love the idea of dragon people! When I heard nightfury all I could think of was How to Train your Dragon. This sounds like it’s a good book, but doesn’t really have much of an ending. I hate that! I like it when we get to see both sides of the story though. I might try this one. Nice review. )

  4. I am disappointed that this is lacking in originality. I mean come on it’s dragons. Still it sounds exciting. I think the cover for the French Edition is so much more striking than the U.S.

  5. I’m not all too happy that things doesn’t get solved here, but still it sounds like a really interesting read. Not to mention dragons, it’s not like I can resit them. Great review, Melliane 🙂
