Celine’s adventures: Opposition by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Celine is a French blogger who writes some fictional reviews about the books she loves the most and they always make me laugh. I hope the humor even if translated is kept. Thanks for her reviews.

Lux, Book 5

Synopsis: Katy knows the world changed the night the Luxen came.

She can’t believe Daemon welcomed his race or stood by as his kind threatened to obliterate every last human and hybrid on Earth. But the lines between good and bad have blurred, and love has become an emotion that could destroy her—could destroy them all.

Daemon will do anything to save those he loves, even if it means betrayal.

They must team with an unlikely enemy if there is any chance of surviving the invasion. But when it quickly becomes impossible to tell friend from foe, and the world is crumbling around them, they may lose everything— even what they cherish most—to ensure the survival of their friends…and mankind.

War has come to Earth. And no matter the outcome, the future will never be the same for those left standing.

——————————————————

Somewhere in the mountains. 4 am.

– Boo … It’s over …. I sobb.
I feel a weight on my chest that prevents me from breathing and that crushes my heart to mashed potatoes.
– It’s okay, it’s okay … Melliane reassures, cradling me with her melodious voice.
– Bouhhh, my tears redouble … But it’s really over, it’s gone and now no more … Niet, nada …
The wind has just risen in the pine forest that houses our expedition. This is our first night in the mountains, and despite the mild temperatures of the day, the nights are still cold. I did not sleep. I have the unpleasant feeling of being a giant ice cube, but I’m not sure that it is due to the season.
Katy and Daemon’ story is behind me, and I feel empty inside. If someone wanted to hit, he would hear a hollow sound. One of the lack. I have so vibrated throughout the five volumes, I was so afraid of that end that I had lost sleep.
– And you have prevented us from sleeping at the same time, Johanne grumbles.
Oops, I have spoken aloud again…
– You can not understand, I replied between sobs.
No, they can not understand the deep void that has invaded my heart.
– No, that’s for sure, we can not understand … It’s not as if you had not cried all night, Le Chat protests.
– And it’s not as if you had not told us for hours that Volume 5 was a perfect ending to this saga. With action, a feverish rhythm, a kaleidoscope of emotions, fear, friendship, tolerance, unity, love, lots of love … and … Daemon, Roanne continues with sarcasm in her voice.
– The one we should recruit because you think he loves cats, Miss Pendergast continues.
Ah, yes, I had a little wandered tonight.
– Bouhhh, but it’s over … really over …
– Yes, but we have a mission I remind you, Melliane shakes me.
– We have a prophecy – Roanne insists, and here we are because of it.
She reaches into the pocket of her fleece jacket that goes back to her nose and hands me a piece of paper:
Following a sacred path you’ll have,
Stopping breathing, you’ll do
To defeat the lion, lamb you’ll become
Releasing the breaking, you’ll achieve
But the end will not be one,
Just the beginning.

– You wrote the prophecy on a piece of paper? Johanne says surprised.
– I have a very bad memory for that stuff, so you better need to be organized. Organization is the key to everything.
I look through my veil of tears. Prophecy, our mission. Saving the Lux saga and all the forbidden books. That’s why we’re here in this mountain, to follow this winding path that leads nowhere except at the top. And now that I think about it, the prophecy does not talk about the top.
– That’s it, she wanders again.
Re-oops, annoying habit at speaking loudly …
– Well, what do we do? I ask forcing myself to recover my spirits.
An owl hoots, the wind resounds in the peaks. It is very cold. I close a little more the zip on my blanket. It is very early, we are six in a tent originally scheduled for two, and my plan seems suddenly less brilliant. I had the great idea to explore a path of the Cathars. Sacred path / Cathars, it seemed to be the key. Le Chat had feebly replied that the Cathars did not have the monopoly of the sacred paths. In France alone, you could count those of Brittany, Auvergne, Berry (yes, we have sacred paths in Berry!) … Melliane argued that we could extend this assumption to the rest of world, India, Ireland, the United States … but I wanted action, as in Lux. I imagined bloody battles like those of my reading. We’d emerged victorious, and could have a boldly display a “Gods: 0 / we: 1”.
– Oh, oh … Melliane pats me gently on the arm and Johanne hands me a jar of Nutella.
– Here, eat, it’s good for the mood.
I nod in silence.
– Girls … do you believe that there are bears here? Roanne inquires.
A concern wrinkles her brow bar.
– well… no, they hibernate, I say to reassure her as much as to reassure myself.
The bestiary of our struggle has far too many species with sharp teeth for my liking. My diaper can only agree.
A growl is heard not far from us and its echo replies. Rustling leaves, branches creaking ..
– Oh, no, they do not hibernate … They’re even making a small fiesta …
– I just hope it is not an aperitif, Le Chat groans, closing the tent with a quick movement.
Yes me too …

  1. I thought you guys were giving up Nutella! I wish I were in that tent with you, lol – where there’s place for six, there’s place for seven too, right? 🙂 Nice post, Celine.

  2. I liked this series a lot, too, except for the final book, which was only kind of okay. But I’ll probably reread them all at some point, they are just so entertaining.

  3. See, can’t not eat nutella! 😉 I still haven’t gotten through the series (only read book one) but I did flick through this one…so I guess I don’t need to read the whole thing anymore, haha.
