Eighth Grave After Dark by Darynda Jones

Charley Davidson,  Book 8

Synopsis: With twelve hellhounds after her, pregnant Charley Davidson takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can’t get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. But after months of being cooped up there, Charley is ready to pop. Both metaphorically and literally since she is now roughly the size of a beached whale. Fortunately, a new case has captured her attention, one that involves a murder on the very grounds the team has taken shelter upon. A decades-old murder of the newly-vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows is almost enough to pull her out of her doldrums.

Charley’s been forbidden to step foot off the sacred grounds. While the angry hellhounds can’t traverse the consecrated soil, they can lurk just beyond its borders. They have the entire team on edge, especially Reyes. And if Charley didn’t know better, she would swear Reyes is getting sick. He grows hotter with every moment that passes, his heat scorching across her skin every time he’s near, but naturally he swears he’s fine.

While the team searches for clues on the Twelve, Charley just wants answers and is powerless to get them. But the mass of friends they’ve accrued helps. They convince her even more that everyone in her recent life has somehow been drawn to her, as though they were a part of a bigger picture all along. But the good feelings don’t last for long because Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life….

Review: I always look forward to every great new novel in the Charley Davidson series and it is with pleasure that I immersed myself in this eighth volume. Of course, and as always, it’s a story that we don’t want to leave and we therefore finish it in one go.

Did I already tell you that I love Charley? Yes, because this is actually the case, especially now that she is wearing Beep! It’s always interesting and fun to see how our heroine considers her future child and I confess that I was eager to see her born to know what would happen. Yes, because it’s true that it’s been a while now that we hear about the prophecy and I was curious to see what was going to happen. In her condition, Charley has to be careful, but while everyone is trying to protect her, to hide from her some secrets and to do everything for her to be safe, it is too much for her! Fortunately, the Cookie’s wedding will bring a bit animation, as well as two surveys … and then we also have Reyes. The only problem is that Charley is determined to understand what everyone is hiding and to act as she wishes, even if it means leaving her Covent incognito to do what she has to do despite the problems (and this meaning even a small go to hell, yes!).

I felt like less things were going on in this new volume but it’s not a concern, no, because the story is very informative. This is only a feeling that remains throughout the chapters. We follow the late pregnancy of our heroine, the Reyes problems that Charley also gradually discovers (I must say that he is very good at keeping his thoughts). Darynda will also give us some revelations that we were waiting for a long time! Oh yes, because we discover the truth about our reaper, her purpose, her true identity, the means of the presence of Mr. Wrong and the hellhounds and I confess that I was not expecting it at all, it was a real surprise. Yes even after eight volumes, the author still manages to surprise us. But that’s not all, because the end leaves us with many other problems and I admit that I’m really curious to find out how they will manage all that.

So yes, as always, I had a great time with the story, we find all the characters that we love and more … did I mention that we see Donovan again? Yes, Yes! He is there and that was also a real surprise and a pleasure of course! I think that I can say once again that the fans of the series will not be disappointed. A new great time and I’m curious to read more with the next volume.

  1. There were some pretty awesome discoveries in this book and some developments I didn’t see coming so I didn’t mind the slower pacing at all. Sometimes I get tired of Charley running around like a lunatic. 🙂
Things will be so much different in the next book, but I’m up for a change. I’m just sorry the release was pushed back.

  2. I’ve only read the first book in this series, but I enjoyed it. I read in an interview that there will eventually be a spin off with her daughter. I’m glad that for once a pregnant heroine doesn’t get herself in trouble. I’m interested to see what’s up with Mr. Wong. I’m glad that you enjoyed this one.

  3. I’m so happy that you enjoyed another adventure with Charley and Reyes! I can’t wait to find out about some of these long awaited revelations – Mr. Wong, Hellhounds and Grim Reaper. Yes, please.
    Great review, Melliane 🙂
