Burn by Suzanne Wright

Dark in You, Book 1

Synopsis: Part of a small demon lair in Las Vegas, tattooist Harper Wallis lives a pretty simple life. That changes overnight when she discovers that her psychic mate, or ‘anchor’, is a guy who’s rumoured to be the most powerful demon in existence. Compelling, full of secrets and armed with raw sexuality, Knox Thorne is determined to claim her as his anchor, creating a psychic bond that will prevent their inner demons from ever turning rogue.

The billionaire also wants Harper in his bed.

She’s not so sure she wants either of those things. No one seems to know what breed of demon Knox is, only that he’s more dangerous than anything she’s ever before encountered. But he refuses to walk away. And when an unknown danger starts closing in on Harper, it seems that Knox is the only one who can keep her safe.

As Prime of his Las Vegas lair and a successful businessman, Knox Thorne is used to being in control. He’s also used to people fearing and obeying him. Harper does neither, which unexpectedly amuses him. Unpredictable, elusive and complex, she draws Knox and his inner demon like nothing ever has.

Knox is used to getting what he wants, and he wants Harper. He’ll have her, and he’ll keep her safe from the threat that looms over her. Because Knox protects what’s his. He won’t allow anyone to take her from him. Even if it will mean letting the demon inside him rise and wreak the havoc it was created to make.

Review: I liked one of the other series written by Suzanne Wright (although I only read the three first books) and I was curious to discover this first new volume. I got a little scared before reading it I must admit. Indeed, some reviews have begun to be mixed and some people did not like the strange relationship between the two characters, but maybe because I knew it or maybe it’s personal but I did not have any difficult feelings about it and I rather had a good time with the story.

We embark on a demon story with a completely different world from what we usually find. I greatly appreciated that the author managed to create a world with new ideas. We discover Harper Wallis, a young demon who evolves quietly in society until she crosses the road of Knox. He is all that she is not: powerful, arrogant, overbearing, cunning … but it seems that he is her alter ego. Determined to make her his own despite the suspicion of the young woman, Knox is ready to do anything to make her succumb and “no” is not an answer for him. However, this relationship will also bring its share of trouble because the position of alter ego in relation to this man raises many dangers. Between women who think she does not deserve him, others who target her to reach him, or those who want to discover which class of demons Knox belongs to, Harper will have many things to manage.

I agree that the relationship between Harper and Knox is quite different and that on one hand it is true that the dominance side is present. But Harper is quite willing, and as she says herself, she can defend herself if she desires so. I enjoyed seeing our heroine evolve from this rather close-up young woman to this person who finally hopes to find the one who will be there for her. It is the same for Knox who also opens to her by revealing her secrets little by little. I confess that I immediately connected with Harper and I found the story quite interesting. I was curious to know how the elections of a monarch would happen and if someone was going to win. Did I mention Lucifer as a secondary character? We do not see him much but I found the idea very original and I hope we will find him afterwards!

I found that it was a good first volume that makes us discover a completely different universe and I am curious to read more.

  1. I hope with Lucifer as a side character that the author does something brilliant with that addition. I’ve read a lot of fantasy with him in it and when he finally makes an appearance it’s very underwhelming.

  2. Ooo this sounds good. I haven’t heard of this author before so thanks for putting it on my radar. Long time since I’ve been on your blog. Good to be back. Happy reading.

  3. Okay. I thought the authors name looked familiar. The novel does sound really good. And I’m loving the cover too. Thanks for sharing about this one!
