Welcome on Between Dreams and Reality, can you introduce yourself in a few words?

I am not a person of few words, but I’ll try.  I’m trained as an English literature major, have worked in journalism, and have been a fulltime fiction writer for a long time.  My first book (a historical romance) was published in 1992 and since then, I’ve published 60 novels.

Can you tell us a bit more about the Pepper Martin series for the readers who don’t know about it?

The Pepper Martin Mysteries grew out of my love for cemeteries.  Yes, I am one of those people who spend endless hours in cemeteries (as a matter of fact, I’m going to explore one later today!).  I love walking around and looking at the interesting headstones, reading the inscriptions, imagining the lives of the people buried there.  There is art and history in a cemetery, and endless chances to put my imagination to work!  It was my love of cemeteries that made me decide a cemetery tour guide would be a great mystery heroine.  And just to add a dollop of fun, I have her investigating mysteries for the ghosts in the cemetery!

The series counts 10 books, will we have more? And if so, how many do you plan to write?

I would write them forever if I could.  Publishers don’t always have the same plans.  So we’ll see . .

How did you end up with the idea of a cemetery guide who could see ghosts?

As mentioned above, it all started with my love of cemeteries.  Then I actually interviewed for a job as a tour guide at a very posh cemetery near where I live.  That’s when I got the idea for a tour guide.  As for the ghosts, well, I happen to be a believer, and what could be more interesting?  For those who haven’t read the series, mine are not can’t-get-to-sleep-after-reading ghosts, they’re actually a whole lot of fun.  So far, I’ve had Pepper deal with the ghost of a 1970s Mafia don and a 1960s rocker, among others, and most recently in “Graveyard Shift,” the ghosts of both Eliot Ness and Al Capone.  Aside from the fun factor, adding the ghosts gives me a chance to research history, something I always love doing.

Was it difficult to write the first novel? Did it become easier with the following books?

Well, the first novel in the Pepper Martin series (“Don of the Dead”) wasn’t my first novel.  So I had some experience as far as putting together a story and actually sitting down to do the work.  But it was my first mystery (I’d already written historical and contemporary romance, YA, and one children’s book).  So I had plenty to learn.  So far, I’ve published 28 mysteries and I learn a little more with each book.  Does it get easier?  Never!  Each book comes with its own challenges.

How did you end up writing paranormal books? Is there any other genre that appeal to you?

The paranormal has always fascinated me, so these books gave me the perfect opportunity to explore the subject.  But yes, I am interested in lots of other things.  Under the Casey Daniels name, I recently published my first historical mystery, “Smoke and Mirrors.”  It’s set in New York City in 1842 and follows the adventures of Evie Barnum, a fictional sister of the great PT Barnum.  As Kylie Logan, I also write mysteries that don’t include ghosts.  In fact, one of them will be published on July 3.  It’s called “Italian Iced” and is the third in the Ethnic Eats Mystery Series.  As Kylie, I’ve also written the League of Literary Ladies mysteries about a group of neighbors who are part of a court-ordered book discussion group.

Does the inspiration for the characters come from people you know?

Not directly although I think every character is made up of bits and pieces of people I know and people I’ve met.  I’ve never plunked anyone down whole in a book.  For one thing, I’m not sure any of us is interesting enough for that (!) and for another, I’m not sure anyone would appreciate it.

Is there a character more difficult than the others to write?

The ghosts, of course, are fairly easy to write.  After all, I can make up the rules there!  But Pepper is a challenge, mostly because she’s younger and way, way hipper than me!  I find myself having to think in a very different way to try and capture her voice and her thoughts.

If you had to choose one book in your series, which one would it be and why?

One of my favorites is “Tomb with a  View.”  The ghost in that book is US President James A. Garfield, a man who was not known for his sense of humor.  I managed to make him funny, I think, and I like the thought of Pepper having to deal with this stuffy old dead guy.

Do you have a favorite author? Or a favorite book?

Asking about a favorite book is like asking about a favorite child.  I try to read a lot of different things and I especially like Alan Bradley’s Flavia DuLuce mysteries.  And of course, there’s Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Tolkien, Jane Austen, Elizabeth Peters and so many, many others!

Do you have new projects that you can tell us about?

I just finished a book that will be published by St. Martin Minotaur next spring under the Kylie Logan name.  It’s called “The Scent of Murder,” a contemporary, traditional mystery set in Cleveland, Ohio.  It’s the first of the Jazz Ramsey mysteries.  Jazz is a dog lover who trains and handles cadaver dogs.  It’s fascinating work and for research, I got to accompany a group of handlers on a training.  Great people and amazing dogs.  I’m currently plotting the second book in the series which is tentatively titled, “The Secrets of Bones.”

C’est appelé « The Scent of Murder », un mystère traditionnel contemporain situé à Cleveland, Ohio.

Pepper Martin, #1

Synopsis: She sees dead people.

Beautiful, smart, and chic, Pepper Martin never had to work a day in her life — until her surgeon daddy was convicted of fraud, her wealthy fiancé took a powder, and the family fortune ran bone dry.

Suddenly desperate, the inexperienced ex-rich girl was forced to take the only job she could get: as a tour guide in a cemetery. But a grave situation took a turn for the worse when a head-on collision with a headstone left her with an unwanted ability to communicate with the disgruntled deceased… and now Pepper has a whacked Mafia don demanding that she hunt down his killers — and threatening to haunt her until she does.
