Synopsis: On a stifling summer’s day, eleven-year-old Jack and his two sisters sit in their broken-down car, waiting for their mother to come back and rescue them. Jack’s in charge, she said. I won’t be long.

But she doesn’t come back. She never comes back. And life as the children know it is changed for ever.

Three years later, mum-to-be Catherine wakes to find a knife beside her bed, and a note that says: I could have killed you.

Meanwhile Jack is still in charge – of his sisters, of supporting them all, of making sure nobody knows they’re alone in the house, and – quite suddenly – of finding out the truth about what happened to his mother.

But the truth can be a dangerous thing …

Review: I’m in a triller phase and not knowing the author, I was quite intrigued by the synopsis.

It’s been three years since Jack and his two sisters lost their mother who was murdered. Yet the case is not closed and the killer has never been found. Their father left home shortly afterwards and if Jack is trying his best to keep them out of homes, at fourteen years old, it is not that simple. So in order to make money, he robs houses for a small organization. But what do you do when you rob a house and you’re sure you’ve discovered the knife that killed your mother? Going to the police means going to jail for all the robberies you’ve done. But how else can you do it?

I had a really good time with this novel and I was curious to find out what really happened with Jack’s mother’s murder. The boy’s very resourceful, but it’s not an easy life either. He’s going to do everything he can to get people to take him seriously and to protect his family.

It was a touching story and an intriguing investigation, because if we know who the murderer is quickly, it’s how to bring him to justice that’s more complicated. A good thriller!
