Leashing the Tempest by Jenn Bennett

Arcadia Bell, Book 2.5

Synopsis: Dating a demon, defeating evil, running a tiki bar: Arcadia Bell is a great occult mage in many respects. But then there’s the challenge of her boyfriend’s precocious teenage son…

Arcadia “Cady” Bell may have saved the Hellfire Club’s children from a local bogeyman, but she and her Earthbound demon boyfriend, Lon Butler, now face a more disturbing problem: his teenage son’s new demonic abilities. Jupe Butler can persuade you to do anything—or so he thinks. To test the limits of his newfound power, Cady invites the co-owner of Tambuku Tiki Lounge to be the teen’s guinea pig during an afternoon boat cruise. But when an angry storm whips the Pacific into a frenzy and Jupe puts them all in serious danger, will Cady’s magick trump a teenager’s excess confidence?

Review: What a pleasure to find Caddy here! This is a heroine I love and each her new adventures is a pleasure to follow. We find inthis little novella all the characters we love from the other books. Jupe, Lon, Caddy and her friend Kar Yee. But this story also arises some new questions about our young heroine.

Our small group meets for a cruise ship whileLon wants to take some pictures for his work. But it is also an opportunity totest the powers of Jupe and who is better than hislast crush Kar Yeeto see the limits of his abilities? But of course, nothing will happen as planned, and they will quickly understand that their boat trip wasn’t a real vacacion.

This novel is a complete story, we enjoyed to discover. As alwaysI loved Jupe! I must say that we can only like him, he is lively and full of energy. He works all the timeon impulse without thinking about theconsequences, which are, it is true, always disastrous, but always so funny. I think that at the end, Lon and Caddy are getting usedto all his problems and only think of theway to fix things. Kar Yee also has a nicesense of humor when she talks with Jupe and it was very funny to follow their discussionsand see how she manages to handle him perfectly. I also enjoyed the introduction of the creature thatwe had not yet had the opportunity to see and I’m totally intrigued now! I do not know if we’ll hear about her in the next novel, but it was very interesting.

This short story is really nice and perfectly follows the second volume. I recommend it toall the fans of the series. It’s full of humor, action and problems.

Leashing the Tempest de Jenn Bennett (VO)

Arcadia Bell, Tome 2.5

Damali and her Guardian team cannot afford such delusions, especially now, when a group of rogue vampires has been killing the artists of Warriors of Light and their rival, Blood Music.

When strange attacks erupt within the club drug-trafficking network and draw the attention of the police, Damali realizes these killings are a bit out of the ordinary, even for vampires. Instead of neat puncture marks in the neck showing where the blood has been drained from the body, these corpses are mutilated beyond recognition, indicating a blood lust and thirst for destruction that surpasses any Damali has encountered before. Soon she discovers that behind these brutal murders is the most powerful vampire Damali has ever met – a seductive beast who is coming for her next…

Guest Post with Jenn Bennett and Giveaway

Jenn Bennett is the author of the Urban Fantasy series: Arcadia Bell. The two first books of the series are Kindling the Moon (June 28th, 2011), Summoning the Night (April 24th, 2012).
Arcadia’s Demons
In Arcadia’s world, there are two known planes of existence: earth as we know it, and a place called the Æthyr, where the ancestors to Earthbound demons live. As an occult magician, Arcadia can summon Æthyric beings to earth for short periods of time, but she cannot travel to their plane. Any knowledge of this place she possesses is derived from reading accounts that other magicians have provided after interviewing summoned demons, or bits and pieces she’s learned by questioning Æthyric demons herself.
Readers will learn more about the Æthyr and its varied inhabitants as the series progresses, but here is a Top 10 list detailing what we know so far:
1. Time moves in a different pattern.
2. They have different planets and stars.
3. Æthyric demons age slower (some have been alive for thousands of years).
4. There are hundreds of demon races.
5. Unlike the Earthbound demons (who look human), Æthyric demons come in all shapes and sizes: some of them have horns, wings, scales, talons, odd skin colors, etc. Some look like beasts, some are more human in form.
6. Most demons, whether Earthbound or Æthyrbound, have varied paranormal skills and abilities.
7. Within the Æthyric races, some are knowledgeable about a type of magick that is different than the magick Cady uses.
8. Some races of demons have amassed great armies.
9. Cady encounters several Æthyric demons who seem to know who she is. They refer to her as “Mother of Ahriman,” which translates to Mother of Demons. Cady has come to believe that this isn’t literal, but a term they use to describe magicians.
10. There are other beings living in the Æthyr (for example, Cady’s guardian, a bird-like Hermeneus spirit). And Cady has run across references to other beings like angels and gods, but she’s never encountered them herself.
In the first two Arcadia Bell books, readers have been introduced to several races of demons: Kerub (the ancestors of Earthbounds), Imp (small, transparent demons who cause minor mischief), Incubi and Succubi (sex demons), Pareba (green skinned demons who host tiny insects on their backs), and a primordial albino White Ice demon.
In LEASHING THE TEMPEST, an Arcadia mini-novella eBook releasing this Christmas, readers will be introduced to a new demon with an interesting ability. And in BINDING THE SHADOWS, the third full Arcadia book (June 2013), readers will not only meet a new kind of Æthyric being, but will also finally learn some big secrets about Cady’s origins . . . and how her life is intertwined with the lives of inhabitants of the Æthyric plane.

I am often asked about the word “magician” in regards to describing my heroine, Cady. She wields an innate magical power and casts spells, so why not use “witch” or “mage,” or some other more genre-accepted word to describe what she is? Some readers even thought they were picking up a book about stage magicians who saw people in half and pull bunnies out of top hats. Even my publisher seemed to have trouble with the word, putting quotes around it in their catalog marketing.
In Cady’s world, the word “witch” is a crass description. Someone who dabbles in folk magic. An amateur. Cady comes from an elite occult background, belonging to an esoteric fraternal order of magicians who use magic and ritual in their everyday lives. They go to temple, learn spells, improve their skills. They feel magic is a birthright and belonging to their organization requires not only talent, but a commitment to an esoteric lifestyle. Rules must be followed. Secrets must be kept. There are competing esoteric orders with different goals, some of them opposing.
Cady jokes in KINDLING THE MOON that her esoteric order is “’Kind of like Hogwarts, only with fewer wands and more nudity.” But I did base this organization, loosely, on real-life esoteric orders. Organizations like Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.) and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn have included some famous (and infamous) members over the years, including Aleister Crowley, William Butler Yeats, Algernon Blackwood, and maybe even Bram Stoker. The term “ceremonial magician” was used by many of the members to describe who they were, and Crowley is credited with using “magick” instead of “magic” to differentiate between what he did and stage magic. So for any readers who detest all the purposeful misspellings in fantasy (Wytch and Kaos and Majik, etc), my use of the “k” in magic was rooted in something historical—not just an attempt to throw something random into the text.

Regarding the word “mage,” I know it’s often used in urban fantasy, but in my head, it will always conjure images of boys in basements, rolling 12- and 20-sided dice. “Mage” and “wizard” seem very high-fantasy to me. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It just doesn’t fit Cady.
Of course, because Cady is so snobby about the word “witch”, and because the hero in my series, her boyfriend Lon, is a demon who feels that the word “devil” is a slur, those words are exactly what they end up calling each other as pet names. But as the series progresses and we discover what Cady’s parents bred into her during her rather unusual conception, we might find that neither witch, mage, wizard, or magician are labels that accurately describe WHAT she is.

Guest Post: Jenn Bennett + Concours

Summoning the Night by Jenn Bennett (VO)

Arcadia Bell, Book 2

Synopsis: MAGICAL TRICKS. DEMONIC TREATS.

After narrowly escaping her fate as a sacrificial scapegoat, Arcadia Bell is back to normal. Or at least as ordinary as life can be for a renegade magician and owner of a tiki bar that caters to Earthbound demons. She’s gearing up for the busiest day of the year–Halloween–when a vengeful kidnapper paralyzes the community. The influential head of the local Hellfire Club taps Cady to track down the fiendish bogeyman, and now that she’s dating red-hot Lon Butler, the Club’s wayward son, she can hardly say no.

Cady and Lon untangle a gruesome thirty-year trail of clues that points to danger for the club members’ children. But locating the person behind the terror will require some metaphysical help from Cady’s loyal bar patrons as well as her potent new Moonchild powers–and she’d better figure it out before the final victim disappears and her own darkest secret becomes her biggest enemy.

Review: I was so impatient to get in another new Arcadia Bell adventure, and I’m really not disappointed about it. The first novel was for me a real surprise, and I was therefore very curious to know how our heroine managed after all these events. Because she has been through a lot.
A new threat looms and some children, descendant from the members of the Hellfire Club are taken away. Arcadia with the help of Lon has to discover what is really happening about these disappearances. But of course nothing is simple and the clues will bring them into some dangerous paths mixing magic and demons.
The investigation was really interesting and once more I wouldn’t have thought about this culprit. Well, I have to say, I didn’t even suppose it would be possible it could be him but it’s true it’s a great idea. We follow the investigation of our little couple, trying to understand what is going on, establishing many hypothesizes, and of course they were all wrong. But it’s always a pleasure when everything is a surprise and when we try to discover all the meanings.
Arcadia has evolved since the first volume, she and Lon became a real couple and it was nice to see them together like that. She will have to deal here with her new powers and it’s true we’re very curious to learn more about them now. They give her some big new possibilities and gifts but we don’t really know the consequences of her actions.
Regarding Lon, he is always here to help and protect our heroine, something that is quite complicated sometimes. Yes, because it’s really easy for Arcadia to attract dangerous situations.
And what can I say about Jupe? I really love this character, he is always so amazing! He hasn’t changed since the first novel despite he is sure he has his knack and that he can order persons to do what he wants. It’s quite worrying but also very useful is some conditions.
We will also discover a new protagonist: Hajo. His power is really fascinating and his character is complex. We wonder if we will see him in the next volumes because he is very intriguing and I hope we could learn more about him. Despite I don’t think it would be a good thing for Cady.
Summoning the Night is a really great second book; the writing style is fluid and it was a very nice read. If you enjoyed the first one, I’m sure you’ll love this one as well.
This novel opens many new paths for the third volume and I can’t wait to know what will happen. A lot of events are initiated, not necessarily good, and I’m curious to see how Arcadia will manage all of this.
