Hunted by the Others by Jess Haines

H&W Investigations, Book 1

Synopsis : Shiarra Waynest’s detective work was dangerous enough when her client base was strictly mortal. But ailing finances have forced her to accept a lucrative case that could save her firm – if it doesn’t kill her first. Shiarra has signed on to work for a high-level mage to recover an ancient artifact owned by one of New York’s most powerful vampires. As soon as Shiarra meets sexy, mesmerizing vamp Alec Royce, she knows her assignment is even more complicated than she thought. With a clandestine anti-Other group trying to recruit her, and magi being eliminated, Shiarra needs back-up and enlists her ex-boyfriend – a werewolf whose non-furry form is disarmingly appealing – and a nerdy mage with surprising talents. But it may not be enough. In a city where the undead roam, magic rules, and even the Others aren’t always what they seem, Shiarra has just become the secret weapon in a battle between good and evil – whether she likes it or not…

Review : Another new series that I was eager to find out! Indeed, Melliane said a lot of good things about the H&W Investigations series, so when I learned that this series would be released in France, I had only one desire: to read it.
Shiarra Waynest has created a private detective agency with her best friend Sara Halloway. But the finances are ailing and if the situation does not get better, they may close down soon. When a mage asks Shiarra to retrieve an artifact held by Alec Royce, a powerful vampire, Shiarra has no choice but to accept, although she always kept her distance with the Others. But the mission is far more difficult than expected and Shiarra finds herself involved unwittingly in a complicated story.
I must admit however that I had some difficulties to get into the book, mainly due to Shiarra because she did not seem very nice to me at the beginning. Indeed, throughout the first half of the book, we have a heroine who can not stop complaining and talk about her prejudices against the Others. The least we can say is that she does not particularly like them and she wants nothing to do with them. We can not say that she is very open minded and at times I even found that she was doing too much. Her reactions when Royce is facing her are excessive. A nothing frightens her. For a private detective supposed to face danger every day, it is not very logic. Moreover, the action is long to arrive but fortunately, once here in the second half of the book, things change, and the heroine changes too. She is a little more self-confident and from there the story becomes more captivating.
However concerning the other characters, I really liked them. Sara the best friend and Shiarra’s partner, Arnold the geeky mage and Chaz, Shiarra’s ex-boyfriend, all of them seemed to me very endearing. Chaz is really touching. He is jealous, possessive and very protective towards Shiarra but we love him. Of course I was also very intrigued by Royce! Besides, I wanted him to be more present in this book. We don’t learn much about him considering what happens to him but the end of the book suggests that he will have a much more important role to play in the next books, at least I hope so because he seems to be a very interesting character.
The world created by Jess Haines is fascinating, although it is not really new. On the one hand, there are supernatural creatures who have made their coming out and who have acquired the same rights as humans. They are called the Others (vampires, werewolves, mages, etc.). Then on the other hand, there are extremist groups (including the White Hats) who claim for the abolition of these rights and the elimination of all the Others, not to mention of course the internal conflicts of this supernatural community. All of this does not remind you other urban fantasy series? Yes, and yet I still love it. What differentiates this series from another one is essentially the magic which is very present in this novel. Another originality of this book lies in the relationships between humans and the Others. Humans must first of all give written consent if they want to have a relationship with an Other. In other words, both in business and love, everything is done by written contract! I found the idea very interesting although I can not imagine the existence of such a world.
In the end even if I had a little trouble at enjoying the heroin, it’s still a nice first book that sets the basis of a series that could be more exciting in the next books. I’m curious to see how things will evolve for Shiarra.

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews

The Eternity Cure (Blood of Eden, 2) – Julie Kagawa

Allison Sekemoto has vowed to rescue her creator, Kanin, who is being held hostage and tortured by the psychotic vampire Sarren. The call of blood leads her back to the beginning—New Covington and the Fringe, and a vampire prince who wants her dead yet may become her wary ally.

Even as Allie faces shocking revelations and heartbreak like she’s never known, a new strain of the Red Lung virus that decimated humanity is rising to threaten human and vampire alike.
The Sweetest Torture – Amanda Bonilla

Thirty years ago, when the sultry and headstrong Cait left Logan Paige, the Alpha cougar shapeshifter of his Montana pride, his entire world came crashing down. He couldn’t explain where he’d been the previous night or why there was a strange woman in his bed…because he had no memory of the night before. Wounded and betrayed, Cait refused to listen to Logan’s excuses and walked straight out of his life…determined to exact her revenge on the sexy cougar who had crushed her heart. With a little help from her influential father, she made sure that Logan’s business, as well as his life, crumbled into ruins. Hell hath no fury, indeed.

But now it’s thirty years later and two of Montana’s most powerful cougar prides are on the brink of war. A tenuous peace is reached, but it’s dependent on Cait and Logan marrying on All Hallow’s Eve. Spitfire Cait has her own plans of revenge…using her feminine wiles to turn Logan into a purring kitty lapping cream at her feet. And Logan has his schemes to regain control and dominate like the Alpha he is…

When they realize that the erotic passion between them is still so intense, Logan and Cait will have to decide if dwelling in the past is worth sacrificing the future…

 Silent Cravings – Jess Haines

What’s a vampire to do when the werewolf she craves is playing hard to bite?
Mouse’s un-life has been hell ever since the vampire who turned her tortured her and removed her vocal chords. Mute, broken, and living as a house guard under the protection of New York’s most powerful vampire, she never thought she’d be able to open up to someone again.
Christoph comes from a werewolf pack that has hated and hunted vampires from the beginning. All the stories he’s ever heard have led him to believe that they are nothing more than savage, conniving demons.
And now he belongs to them.
Finding himself in the hands of a beautiful, heartsick vampire wasn’t on his to-do list when he came to New York. His mistakes have led him and some other pack members into indentured servitude, and it’s up to him to figure out how they can all escape. The question is—-does he really want to leave?

Bitterweet Blood (The Order, 1) – Nina Croft

Tara Collins just wants to be normal. Everyone else wants her dead.

Tara’s eccentric aunt raised her to be fearful of the world and follow the rules. But after her aunt’s death, Tara is ready to take control and experience life for the first time. But she quickly discovers that everything she’s been told is a web of lies. Determined to solve the mystery of who she is truly, she hires private investigator to help her uncover the truth.

Christian Roth is more than your average PI. A vampire and ex-demon hunter, Christian lives among the humans, trying to be “normal.” But recently, things seem to be falling apart. There’s a crazed demon hell-bent on revenge hunting him down, and a fae assassin on the loose with an unknown target. And the Order he abandoned desperately needs his help.

As the secrets of Tara’s past collide with the problems in Christian’s present, she finds herself fighting her attraction to the dark and mysterious investigator. Falling in love does not fit into her plans at all, but Tara soon learns that some rules are meant to be broken.

Etiquette & Espionage (Finishing School, 1) – Gail Carriger

It’s one thing to learn to curtsy properly. It’s quite another to learn to curtsy and throw a knife at the same time. Welcome to Finishing School.

Sophronia Temminnick at 14 is a great trial more interested in dismantling clocks and climbing trees than proper manners — and the family can only hope that company never sees her atrocious curtsy. Her poor mother, desperate for her daughter to become a proper lady, enrolls the lively tomboy in Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality.

But young ladies learn to finish…everything. Certainly, they learn the fine arts of dance, dress, and etiquette, but they also learn to deal out death, diversion, and espionage — in the politest possible ways, of course. Sophronia and her friends are in for a rousing first year’s education.

 Ancestral (Rebecca Kean, 4) – Cassandra O’Donnell

Ici Jess Haines.  Je suis l’auteur de la série de fantaisie urbaine Waynest (HUNTED BY THE OTHERS, TAKEN BY THE OTHERS, DECEIVED BY THE OTHERS, et STALKING THE OTHERS).

Arnold: Et alors ? Tu as quand même sauvé la journée.
Tu as survécu.
Royce: Sages mots, mage.
Arnold: Merci. J’essaie.

Guest Post: The H&W Gang Discuss What It’s Like to be a Hero
By Jess Haines
Hello there!  Jess Haines here.  I’m the author of the urban fantasy H&W Investigations series (HUNTEDBY THE OTHERS, TAKEN BY THE OTHERS, DECEIVED BY THE OTHERS, and STALKING THE OTHERS).
Thanks to Bragelonne publishing, HUNTED BY THE OTHERS will soon be available in French!
Now, on to the post. Shiarra is here with a few of her friends (and otherwise) to tell you what it’s like to save the day. Over to you, Shia!
____________________
Shiarra: Wait, what? I’m not a hero.
Sara: Sure you are. You saved a bunch of people, didn’t you?
Royce: I do believe that your actions would qualify as heroic.
Shiarra: No way. I was scared witless half the time, and had no clue what I was doing the rest of it.
Arnold: So? You still saved the day.
Chaz: If not for you, half the Others in the city would be dead or under the control of a bigger monster than… well, than we already are.
Shiarra: Guys, I’m afraid of vampires and werewolves. I scream when I see spiders in the bathroom or roaches in the kitchen, and I’m regularly late on my rent. I’m not exactly Super-girl, here.
Royce: What frightens you is irrelevant. It’s how you react in an emergency situation. You faced me in battle with little more than a handgun and a stake.
Shiarra: Yeah, and we see how well that turned out.
Arnold: I wouldn’t be complaining about that. You lived through it. That’s more than a lot of his enemies could say.
Chaz: Give me five minutes alone with him.
Royce: Try me, dog.
Sara: Do you guys have to do this every time? I mean, really.
Shiarra: Yeah. Seriously.
Arnold: Vampires and werewolves. Cats and dogs. You know how it is.
Chaz: Wolves aren’t dogs, you know. I’m getting really tired of you guys calling me that.
Royce: Then I shall make a note to use the term more often.
Shiarra: Oh, come on. You don’t like it when we call you a leech, right? So stop.
Royce: I’ve been called far worse.
Sara: I have to admit, I’m curious what that might entail.
Arnold: Same here.
Shiarra: Blood-breath?
Chaz: Worm-bait?
Arnold: Walking corpse?
Royce: Very funny.
Shiarra: Okay, sorry. That was uncalled for.
Chaz: But satisfying. Very satisfying.
Arnold: Fun and games aside, maybe we shouldn’t be baiting the very old, very powerful vampire.
Royce: Wise words, mage.
Arnold: Thanks. I try.
Sara: I think it’s time we get back on topic.
Shiarra: Doesn’t seem like much of a topic. I’m telling you guys, I’m not hero material.
Chaz: A lot of Others would disagree with you. Including me.
Shiarra: Right. Me freaking out and being a spaz is very admirable.
Sara: You have to admit, it was kind of funny to watch you figure out that magic hunter’s belt was talking to you.
Shiarra: Yes, because like so many other New Yorker’s, I looked like an idiot talking to an imaginary voice in my head.
Arnold: Yeah, but that voice in your head talked you through how to survive a fight against vampires, werewolves, and magi.
Royce: Count yourself lucky. If you had not had the benefit of help from the magi, you would never have survived.
Shiarra: Right. I nearly died, ended up contracted to you, and spent weeks in the intensive care unit. Just how I wanted things to turn out.
Chaz: I wish I could shred that contract.
Shiarra: You and me both.
Royce: You know I won’t force its terms on you.
Sara: Yeah. Because you know she’ll stake your ass if you do.
Shiarra: Not likely. I know we doctored the contract so it swings both ways—he can hurt me, I can hurt him, yadda yadda—but I’m done with this mess. I don’t want anything more to do with Others.
Royce: Perhaps—but that doesn’t mean we are done with you.

Interview with Jess Haines for her H&W Investigations series

Welcome today to Jess Haines, the author of the H&W Investigations series. Her fourth book: Stalking the Others, will be released on July 3rd. If you’re interested you can read the review here. We hope you’ll enjoy this amazing interview. Thanks to Jess Haines for answering all our questions.
Can you introduce yourself in a few words?
Sure thing!
First, thanks again for having me over for the STALKING THE OTHERS blog tour. My name is Jess Haines, and I write urban fantasy.
I’m a workaholic who loves coffee and chocolate and can’t survive without books.  I’m originally from New York, but I’m currently living in Los Angeles because it is suitably weird enough for the time being.  I enjoy karaoke and bad movies, and have a menagerie of animals to keep me company when I’m not writing.  (Seriously, when I’m an old fart, I’ll be known as the crazy bird/cat/fish/snake/lizard lady.)
How many books do you intend to write for this series?
Right now, I’m contracted to write six books, but of course I’d be happy to write more in the H&W Investigations series.
Was it difficult to write the first book? How long did it take? Did it become easier with the following books?
No, not at all. In fact, I’d say HUNTED BY THE OTHERS (book 1) and TAKEN BY THE OTHERS (book 2) were the easiest to write in the series since I wrote them with no break, back to back.
I finished the first draft of HBTO in about 3 months and the first draft of TBTO in 4 months.
Don’t use my timeframe as a measuring stick, though. Back then, writing was what I did to keep sane at night when I couldn’t sleep due to a combination of a crappy work schedule (I was working two jobs, between 80 and 90 hours a week) and insomnia.  Now that I have a lot of the stress off of my plate, I write at a much more leisurely pace.
How do you find your titles? Did you imagine them all when you started the series or do you brainstorm each time?
I brainstorm each time. TAKEN BY THE OTHERS (book 2) was actually supposed to be the title for the fourth book, which is now STALKING THE OTHERS.  The original title of book 1, HUNTED BY THE OTHERS, was DEALING WITH THE OTHERS.
It’s a combination of brainstorming and throwing stuff at my editor to see what sticks.
How did you end up writing Urban Fantasy books? Is there any other genre that appeal to you?
Way back in the day, when I first wanted to be a novelist, I decided I was going to be a Serious Fantasy Author. I was going to write doorstops in the style of George R.R. Martin, Terry Goodkind, or Robert Jordan.
Yeah, that didn’t go so well.
After going through some rough times, I found that writing something so desperately serious was just so not me that I had to do something else. That was around the time when I discovered the Dresden Files and the Anita Blake series. Since Shiarra was essentially a ready-made character from my roleplaying days, I thought it would be fun to use her as the main character for my first urban fantasy novel.
And HUNTED BY THE OTHERS was born!
Does the inspiration for the characters come from people you know?
For the most part, no. They are conglomerations of my experiences with books, movies, etc.
Is there a character more difficult than the others to write?
As for one who is harder to write than the rest? Jack. He’s a huge pain in the ass. Every time I think I have that vamp hunter pinned, he surprises me with a new twist to his character.
Who is your favorite character in the series?
I love them all for different reasons.  It’s hard to choose a favorite because they all have behind-the-scenes significances and histories—not to mention strengths and flaws—that the readers haven’t seen and color my perspective.
If forced to choose, I’d say it’s a toss-up between Royce and Arnold.  Royce is such a delightfully devious bastard, and so much fun to write, that it’s hard not to love the vampire.  Wouldn’t want to be in Shia’s shoes if I was faced with him, though!
On the other hand, there’s Arnold.  He’s got a huge “look out for number one” mentality, but he’s also a nerd with glasses and (channeling a bit of Genie here) phenomenal cosmic powers at his fingertips.  C’mon, you know that’s hot.
Have you already other plans for future series? Or is it top secret?
Right now, I’m contracted through six books in the H&W Investigations series, though I’ve got plots in mind for more. There are also some spinoff ideas I’ve been kicking around.  We’ll see what happens once book six is done.
Most of my attention right now is on completing the next book in the H&W series, but I’ve got some other stuff I’m working on, too.
If you’re familiar with the series, I’ve got a little something I’m looking for a home for right now that features Mouse, the mute vampiress, and Christoph, the dude in the fetish collar who shows up briefly in DECEIVED and again in STALKING THE OTHERS.
Can you tell us a little something about the fourth book?
This is the fourth book in my series, so let me start with a short recap of the other three:
Book 1 – HUNTED BY THE OTHERS: Shiarra Waynest, a private investigator, is blackmailed into retrieving an artifact from a vampire. The problem? As a human, she doesn’t stand a chance against the Others.
Book 2 – TAKEN BY THE OTHERS: With the artifact destroyed, Shia believes her dealings with the supernaturals in town are over—but the vampires, werewolves, and monster hunters in town believe otherwise…
Book 3 – DECEIVED BY THE OTHERS: Determined to get away from the troubles plaguing her in the city, Shia goes on a vacation with her werewolf boyfriend—along with his entire pack—in the Catskills.
Book 4 – STALKING THE OTHERS: After the events and subsequent betrayal Shia experienced in the last book, she’s done being pushed around.  If she’s going down, she’ll take out as many of her enemies as she can—and hope that in the process, she keeps whatever humanity she has left...
So, in this book, Shiarra is in a very bad place.  She’s lost her family, her boyfriend, and probably her business and license as a private investigator—and some might feel she’s also lost her marbles.  She’s ready to take on the world, and get some payback from the people who turned her life into her version of a living hell.
It’s not recommended as a starting point—this is the continuation that picks up right where my last book, DECEIVED BY THE OTHERS, left off.
Without spoiling, did you know from the start that the relationship between Chaz and Shiarra would be like that?
Yup. I am an evil author. I had that twist planned from the beginning. Along with a few others…
Did you need to do a lot of researches for your books?
Sometimes. It’s been a while since my last trip to New York, so every once in a while I have to go on a picture hunt or pull up a map to make sure I’ve got my geography and such correct. For the most part, I’ve got everything worked out in my head, so I don’t have to do too much research.
Do you have a favorite author? Or a favorite book?
I have many.  It’s too hard for me to pick just one!  Here are a few of my favorites:
Series:
-Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series
-Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files series
-Kim Harrison’s Hollows series
-The Coldifre Trilogy by C.S. Friedman
-Many of the DragonLance novels
-ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER DUNGEON and its sequel, ONE QUEST, HOLD THE DRAGONS by Greg Costikyan
-Mark Henry’s Amanda Feral series
-Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth series
-Laurrell K. Hamilton’s early Anita Blake novels
-Robin Hobb’s Liveship series
-Mary Janice Davidson’s Queen Betsy series

Standalone Novels:
-THE WHEEL OF TIME by Robert Jordan (yes, this is part of a series, but it’s really the only one I truly enjoyed—the series got too political for my tastes)
-THE ELVENBANE by Andre Norton and Mercedes Lackey
-JOHN DIES AT THE END by David Wong
-NEEDFUL THINGS by Stephen King
-THE TOMMYKNOCKERS by Stephen King
-1984 by George Orwell
-ENDER’S GAME by Orson Scott Card
-BATTLEFIELD EARTH by L. Ron Hubbard
-HAPPY HOUR AT CASA DRACULA by Marta Acosta (I know there are more books in this series, but I only just read the first one and it became an instant favorite!)
-RAPTOR RED by Robert T. Bakker
-JURASSIC PARK by Michael Crichton
-THE TRUE CONFESSIONS OF CHARLOTTE DOYLE by Avi
-SPLIT HEIRS by Lawrence Watt-Evans and Esther Friesner
-STEAL THE DRAGON by Patricia Briggs
-UNDER THE FANG (an anthology of vampire short stories, not for the faint of heart/weak of stomach)
And, of course, any Calvin & Hobbes titles.

Where is your favorite place to write?
The couch in my living room. It’s so darn comfy!  😉
Your books are going to be released in France, do you see yourself meeting your French fans one day?
I would love to!  I’m not sure how realistic it is—international travel is a bit outside of my current budget—but if the book sells well enough, it would be fabulous to come to a convention or do a signing in France!

Le titre initial pour le premier volume, HUNTED BY THE OTHERS, était DEALING WITH THE OTHERS.
Et HUNTED BY THE OTHERS est né !
Friedman
– beaucoup des romans de DragonLance
-ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER DUNGEON et sa suite, ONE QUEST, HOLD THE DRAGONS de Greg Costikyan
– serie Amanda Feral de Mark Henry
– série Sword of Truth de Terry Goodkind
-THE ELVENBANE de Andre Norton et Mercedes Lackey
-JOHN DIES AT THE END de David Wong
-NEEDFUL THINGS de Stephen King
-THE TOMMYKNOCKERS de Stephen King
-THE TRUE CONFESSIONS OF CHARLOTTE DOYLE de Avi
-SPLIT HEIRS de Lawrence Watt-Evans et Esther Friesner
-STEAL THE DRAGON de Patricia Briggs

Stalking the Others by jess Haines

H&W Investigations, Book 4

Synopsis: Vampires, werewolves, mages–the Others are very real, and wreaking havoc in Shiarra Waynest’s life. But now, she’s returning the favor…

Once, she was one of the good guys–or as close as a New York P.I. can get. Then Shiarra Waynest was drawn into the world of the Others. Every faction has its own loyalties and agenda. And Shia’s recent betrayal by her ex-boyfriend means that she may be on the verge of becoming a rogue werewolf at the next full moon.

Of course, with all the threats against her, Shia’s not sure she’ll live long enough to find out. The enigmatic vampire Royce wants her back in his clutches, as do two powerful werewolf packs, along with the police. Instead of going into hiding, Shia is enlisting the aid of her enchanted hunter’s belt and every dirty P.I. trick she knows. If she’s going down, she’ll take out as many of her enemies as she can–and hope that in the process, she keeps whatever humanity she has left…

Review: Since the end of the third novel, I only wanted one thing: to get into this one. Indeed, the last volume was full of turnarounds of any kinds. It was amazing, we found ourselves buffetedon all sides to finally question everything. But here it is, there are also a lot of consequences, and we can see them now in this novel.
Shia only think about one thing in this volume, her revenge against Chaz, and nothing, really nothing, could stop her in her new quest. But she doesn’t have a lot of allies now she ran away from Royce and there is just one person she can turn to. Plus, there is always a threat over her head as she still could turn into a werewolf for the next full moon.
I confess that the day’s countdown before the full moon at the beginning of each chapter was terrible. I really wanted to skip some to be on the BIG day and like that learn the truth. No! I was strong, I didn’t do it! I’m so proud of me… Well, Ok, I wouldn’t confess that I did it for another event. If you had read the book, you would have understood, the wait is terrible! (Well I hadn’t read a lot either, I still kept the surprise! I was mainly curious to know when she would meet with Chaz). Poor Shia, she goes though a lot of things in this book. It’s very difficult for her to question everything and therefore, she sometimes has to do some choices that aren’t very wise for her.
It’s heart breaking to see the feelings and the goals of our heroine but we can also understand why she wants that after all she’s been through. I was very impatient to assist to the confrontation between her and her ex boyfriend. From the start, we know that it will be epic. I have to say Chaz hasn’t changed at all. I think it’s a character difficult to understand, he wants everything and in the same time he sabotages what he undertakes by himself.
We only see Alec a few times in this novel, yes, it was quite sad as it’s a character I love to read about. But our heroine always has the vampire in her mind, so it allows us to have him all along the story. Indeed, I was very surprised by the end; did I say “surprised”? I think I should say “more than happy”. But what can we do with such an end? There is only one thing, to wait and throw ourselves on book 5 as soon as possible.
It’s also very pleasant to learn more about the belt that Shiarra always wore. I’m ashamed to tell that I didn’t really think about this mage or about who he was before. We can here understand better his will to kill the Others and to revenge the persons he loved. In this novel, he is, like always, determined to do what he thinks is the best for him despite the consequences, even if Shia doesn’t agree with him.
Well, I won’t relate the entire story, but it’s another really great novel. The only problem is that as soon as we get into the story we can’t put the book down until the end. A lot of answers are given but we also have many new questions and I’m impatient to know the last word. If you enjoyed the last books, you’ll surely love this one. A mix of love, conspiracies and mysteries. A new amazing book featuring all the characters we love.
