Blood of the Demon by Diana Rowland
Synopsis: BETWEEN HEAVEN AND HELL, MAN AND DEMON, SHE’S ABOUT TO FACE THE ONE THING SHE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO SURVIVE.
Welcome to the world of Kara Gillian, a cop with a gift. Not only does she have the power of “othersight” to see what most people can’t even imagine, but she’s become the exclusive summoner of a demon lord. Or maybe it’s the other way around. The fact is, with two troublesome cases on her docket and a handsome FBI agent under her skin, Kara needs the help of sexy, insatiable Lord Rhyzkahl more than he needs her. Because these two victims, linked by suspicious coincidence, haven’t just been murdered. Something has eaten their souls.
It’s a case with roots in the arcane, but whose evil has flowered among the rich, powerful, and corrupt in Beaulac, Louisiana. And as the killings continue, Kara soon realizes how much there’s still to learn about demons, men, and things that kill in the night—and how little time she has to learn it.
All the characters of the previous volume are here, for our greatest pleasure, and we start the story exactly where we left it. I think it’s always interesting to have a investigation on the foreground of a story, because it is ultimately not often the case. A good mystery is always so interesting to understand. We follow the new Kara’s case, and of course, this implies that this time too we have the arcanic magic. Our young investigator will have to deal with a series of murders, each more terrible than the others and with no real logic. The more we advance in the chapters, the more we understand that this whole story is more complicated than we had originally planned. And I confess that I was very surprised by the identity of the culprit, it didn’t even cross my mind. This provides a good mystery and a good plot that keeps us in suspense all along the story.
We feel the tension between Ryan and Kara throughout the book, but the two characters don’t seem to be able to accept what they feel for each other. On one hand, we keep the suspense about their future relationship but on another it’s quite annoying to see that they don’t understand what is happening. What about Rhyzkahl? I still think he isn’t enough present for my taste and I looked forward each of his appearances in the story. I think this is one of the reasons why I read the book so quickly. I also hope that we can learn more about him in the next novel, but I think it will eventually be possible. I still don’t know which one to choose between him and Ryan. Indeed, it is true that the two of them are very intriguing and more than mysterious. And as always we know that they want something from our heroine but it’s more difficult to know what it is. I also think that I’ll need more to really confirm my choice.
As soon as we enter in the story we ask ourselves many questions to understand what is happening and Diana Rowland perfectly manages to get us lost among all the frames of the novel. It is therefore a pleasure to think and to understand the truth.
To conclude, I must say that this second volume is as good as the first one, but once finished we’re very curious to see where the author will lead us in the third volume. I can’t wait to read it to have my answers.
