InCryptid, Book 5

Synopsis: Verity Price is back on the West Coast and getting back into the swing of the family business: cryptozoology. She’s rescuing cryptids from bad situations, protecting them from monster-hunters, and generally risking life and limb for the greater good, with her ex-Covenant partner/husband, Dominic, by her side. Her ballroom dance career is behind her—or so she thinks. When Verity gets the call from the producers of Dance or Die, the reality show she almost won several years before, she finds the lure impossible to resist, and she and Dominic are off to L.A. for one last shot at the big time.

Of course, nothing is that simple. When two contestants turn up dead, Verity will need every ally she can find with the investigation, without blowing her cover…

Review: The last two volumes were devoted to Verity’s brother and although I appreciate him very much, it’s true that I have a weakness for the young woman and I was impatient to find her again in this fifth volume. And what a pleasure to have her! I must said that we had heard so much about her dancing skills as she was in Dance and Die, so how not to be intrigued when we learn that the producers ask her to participate in a new season?

We thus find Verity married (yes married in Las Vegas) with our dear Dominic. But then, her life is turned upside down, although the young woman thought she had finally chosen her future, when she receives the email that changes the game. Indeed, the Dance and Die producers contact her to offer her to go back and to work for them and to do a season combining all the previous participants. It does not take much for the young woman to accept, that passion being very present. The only problem is that she is obliged to take back her identity of Valerie, a person with a different temperament and one who of course is not married. Dominic will therefore follow the young woman as her boyfriend but with the prohibition to follow her in places where all the dancers live, something that is not really simple for them. This is already a thing to manage with in addition the dance she has not practiced for a long time, but when the stress rises and the show evolves, and that the people eliminated are found dead … Verity will therefore have to find all the necessary allies, even those within the company to try to understand what is happening. And while the dead accumulate and her grandmother arrives to help Verity (yes we finally discover Alice and it was so much fun !!!), it appears that a cult is trying to bring a serpent God from another dimension. It is up to Verity and her family to understand what happens before others disappear.

It was a very good new volume and it is once again a real pleasure to see the talking mice that are always a tremendous asset to the story and who are always a lot of fun. How not to succumb? But of course, there are also other species and it was as always very interesting! In addition to this, we see the evolution of Verity, we see what she wants to do in her life and we are witnessing her decisions in relation to the dance and her work. It was fascinating to see what she wanted, to realize what was important dor her… The final also surprised me, I was not expecting it, the culprit, the reactions of Verity and all the other things! I am very impatient to read more and to see the consequences of this novel.

A very good discovery again! Seanan McGuire takes me away as always!

Elle sauve des cryptids de mauvaises situations, en les protégeant des chasseurs de monstres, et risquant généralement sa vie et son intégrité physique pour le plus grand bien, avec son partenaire ex-Covenant/mari, Dominique à son côté. Sa carrière de danse de salon est derrière elle ou c’est ce qu’elle croyait. Lorsque Verity reçoit l’appel des producteurs de danse or Die, le reality show qu’elle a presque gagné plusieurs années auparavant, elle trouve l’appât impossible de résister, et elle et Dominic partent pour L.A. pour un dernier coup comme à la grande époque.

Bien sûr, rien n’est aussi simple que cela. Quand deux candidats sont retrouvés morts, Verity aura besoin de tous les alliés possibles qu’elle peut trouver pour enquêter, sans faire sauter sa couverture …

Avis : Les deux derniers tomes étaient consacrés au frère de Verity et même si je l’apprécie beaucoup, c’est vrai que j’ai un faible pour la jeune femme et j’étais donc impatiente de pouvoir repartir avec elle dans ce cinquième tome. Et quel plaisir de la retrouver ! Il faut dire qu’on a tant entendu parler de ses talents de danseuse, de son passage à Dance and Die, alors comment ne pas être intriguée quand on apprend que les producteurs la rappellent pour participer à une nouvelle émission ?

On retrouve donc Verity mariée (oui mariée à Las Vegas) avec notre cher Dominic. Mais voilà, la vie reprend de plus belle alors que la jeune femme a enfin choisi son avenir jusqu’à cet email qui change la donne. En effet, les producteurs de Dance and Die la contactent pour lui proposer de revenir travailler pour eux et faire une saison combinant toutes celles précédentes. Il n’en faut pas beaucoup plus à la jeune femme pour accepter, cette passion étant bien présente. Le seul hic c’est qu’elle est obligée de reprendre son identité de Valerie, une personne au tempérament différent et qui bien sûr n’est pas mariée. Dominic va donc suivre la jeune femme en tant que son petit ami mais avec l’interdiction de la suivre dans les lieux où tous les danseurs vivent, chose qui n’est pas vraiment simple. C’est déjà une chose à gérer en plus de la danse qu’elle n’a pas pratiquée depuis longtemps, mais alors que le stress monte et que l’émission évolue, les personnes éliminées sont retrouvées mortes… Verity va donc devoir trouver tous les alliés nécessaires, même ceux au sein de la troupe pour essayer de comprendre ce qu’il se passe. Et alors que les morts s’accumulent et que la grand-mère de Verity arrive pour l’aider (oui nous découvrons enfin Alice et quel plaisir !!!), il semblerait qu’un culte essaie de faire venir un Dieu serpent d’une autre dimension. C’est à Verity et ses proches de comprendre ce qu’il se passe avant que d’autres ne disparaissent.

C’était un nouveau très bon tome et c’est une fois encore un réel plaisir de retrouver les souris parlantes qui sont une fois de plus un atout extraordinaire à l’histoire et que l’on prend plaisir à suivre et à découvrir. Comment ne pas succomber ? Mais bien sûr, on retrouve aussi d’autres espèces et c’était comme toujours très intéressant ! En plus de cela, on voit l’évolution de Verity, on voit ce qu’elle désire faire de sa vie et on assiste à ses décisions par rapport à la danse et son travail. C’était fascinant de voir ce qu’elle désirait, de réaliser ce qui était important… La conclusion m’a aussi surprise, je ne m’y attendais pas, les coupables, les réactions de Verity et le reste ? Je suis très impatiente de pouvoir lire la suite et de voir les conséquences de ce tome.

Une très bonne découverte une fois de plus ! Seanan McGuire m’emporte comme à chaque fois !

Alexander Price has survived gorgons, basilisks, and his own family—no small feat, considering that his family includes two telepaths, a reanimated corpse, and a colony of talking, pantheistic mice. Still, he’s starting to feel like he’s got the hang of things…at least until his girlfriend, Shelby Tanner, shows up asking pointed questions about werewolves and the state of his passport. From there, it’s just a hop, skip, and a jump to Australia, a continent filled with new challenges, new dangers, and yes, rival cryptozoologists who don’t like their “visiting expert” very much.

Australia is a cryptozoologist’s dream, filled with unique species and unique challenges. Unfortunately, it’s also filled with Shelby’s family, who aren’t delighted by the length of her stay in America. And then there are the werewolves to consider: infected killing machines who would like nothing more than to claim the continent as their own. The continent which currently includes Alex.

Survival is hard enough when you’re on familiar ground. Alex Price is very far from home, but there’s one thing he knows for sure: he’s not going down without a fight.

Review: It’s always a pleasure to immerse myself in the Seanan McGuire novels, whatever the series. It’s been a moment that I had this fourth book but I had forgotten to get into the story. Indeed, by receiving the fifth book featuring Verity (finally !!!! I was so waiting for this one), I realized that I had jumped a novel. But as I love Verity, I did read this novel fast enough to finally find her again! Well I say that but I also had a great time there too, this is also a big advantage and one of the reasons I read them all quickly each time.

Alexander is a character that I like to follow even though of course I have a preference for the young woman and this time, our hero has to face many problems. Indeed, his girlfriend Shelby asks him for help and so to accompany her to Australia to deal with the werewolves who are increasing in number and causing many casualties. Being very afraid of these creatures is one thing, but to face Shelby’s family which is regarded as the “enemy” is quite worse! I admit that the meeting between the two is the most interesting and vibrant! It was fascinating to meet another family, to see their decisions, to understand how they ruled their small group and how they interacted with external beings. I understand the surprise and the envy that Alex has over everything. It’s hard for him to act especially as he is afraid of the opinion of the parents of the young woman and yet he does his best. Shelby also helps as she can. It was touching to see that sometimes she took his side despite the reproaches of her family, as well as the threats.

And then there are the werewolves … I admit that I was curious to see the person responsible for these acts, and I was quite surprised when I learned the truth because I was not expecting this character but it was well found. This virus is quite different from what would be expected, particularly in the details and I always find very interesting to see the ideas of the authors on this. It will not be a simple story and many characters are going to call into question their beliefs. We also discover other species and it was again a pleasure! I did not say about that but do not worry, you will also find the talking mouses that we love. It’s always so nice to see them interact although not everything is rosy for them.

As I said at the beginning of the story, I had once again a great time and I can now get into the next book and finally find Verity! It was a very good story and a pleasure to learn more about Shelby that we see so often in the novels. A good find!

Malheureusement, il est également rempli de la famille de Shelby, qui n’est pas enchantée par la durée de son séjour en Amérique. Et puis il y a les loups-garous à considérer: des machines à tuer infectées qui ne voudraient rien de plus que de revendiquer le continent. Le continent où réside actuellement Alex.

La survie est assez dure quand vous êtes sur un terrain familier. Alex Price est très loin de la maison, mais il y a une chose qu’il sait avec certitude: il ne va pas tomber sans se battre.

Avis : C’est toujours un plaisir de s’immerger dans les romans de Seanan McGuire, quelle que soit sa série. Ca faisait un moment que j’avais ce quatrième tome mais j’avais oublié de me lancer dans l’histoire. En effet, en recevant le cinquième tome mettant en scène Verity (enfin !!!! j’attendais ça avec impatience), je me suis rendue compte que j’avais sauté une histoire. Mais comme j’adore Verity, j’ai lu le roman assez vite pour enfin la retrouver ! Bon je dis ça mais j’ai aussi passé un très bon moment ce qui est aussi un gros avantage et une des raisons pour lesquelles j’ai pu lire l’ensemble rapidement par la même occasion.

Alexander est un personnage que j’apprécie suivre même si j’ai bien sûr une préférence pour la jeune femme et cette fois-ci, notre héros se retrouve face à de gros problèmes. En effet, sa petite amie Shelby lui demande de l’aider et de l’accompagner en Australie pour faire face aux loups-garous qui augmentent en nombre et causent beaucoup de victimes. Qu’il ait très peur de ces créatures est une chose, mais faire face à la famille de Shelby qui est considérée comme « ennemie » est tout aussi pire ! J’avoue que la rencontre entre les deux est des plus intéressantes et surtout animée ! C’était fascinant de rencontrer une autre famille, de voir leurs décisions, de voir comment ils gouvernaient leur petit groupe et comment ils interagissaient avec les êtres extérieurs. Je comprends la surprise et l’envie d’Alex d’ailleurs par rapport à tout ça. C’est difficile pour lui d’agir surtout en ayant peur de l’avis des parents de la jeune femme et pourtant il fait au mieux. Shelby l’aide d’ailleurs comme elle le peut. C’était touchant de voir que parfois elle prenait son parti malgré les reproches de sa famille, de même que les menaces.

Et puis il y a les loups-garous… J’avoue que j’étais curieuse de voir la personne responsable de tous ces actes et j’ai été assez surprise quand j’ai appris la vérité parce que je ne m’y attendais pas vraiment mais c’était bien trouvé. Ce virus est assez différent de ce qu’on trouve habituellement, notamment dans les détails et je trouve toujours très intéressant de voir les idées des auteurs à ce sujet. Ce ne sera pas une histoire simple et de nombreux personnages vont devoir remettre en doute leur croyance. On découvrira aussi d’autres espèces et c’était encore une fois un réel plaisir ! Je ne l’ai pas dit mais ne vous inquiétez pas, vous retrouverez aussi les souris parlantes que l’on adore et dont on ne peut se passer. C’est toujours si agréable de les voir interagir bien que tout ne soit pas tout rose pour elles.

Comme je le disais au début de l’histoire, j’ai passé une fois encore un excellent moment et je peux maintenant me lancer dans le prochain tome et enfin retrouver Verity ! C’était une très bonne histoire et un plaisir d’en apprendre plus sur Shelby que l’on voit si souvent dans les romans. Une bonne découverte !
