Takedown Twenty by Janet Evanovich

Stephanie Plum, Book 20

Synopsis: New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum knows better than to mess with family. But when powerful mobster Salvatore “Uncle Sunny” Sunucchi goes on the lam in Trenton, it’s up to Stephanie to find him. Uncle Sunny is charged with murder for running over a guy (twice), and nobody wants to turn him in—not his poker buddies, not his bimbo girlfriend, not his two right-hand men, Shorty and Moe. Even Trenton’s hottest cop, Joe Morelli, has skin in the game, because—just Stephanie’s luck—the godfather is his actual godfather. And while Morelli understands that the law is the law, his old-world grandmother, Bella, is doing everything she can to throw Stephanie off the trail.

It’s not just Uncle Sunny giving Stephanie the run-around. Security specialist Ranger needs her help to solve the bizarre death of a top client’s mother, a woman who happened to play bingo with Stephanie’s Grandma Mazur. Before Stephanie knows it, she’s working side by side with Ranger and Grandma at the senior center, trying to catch a killer on the loose—and the bingo balls are not rolling in their favor.

With bullet holes in her car, henchmen on her tail, and a giraffe named Kevin running wild in the streets of Trenton, Stephanie will have to up her game for the ultimate takedown.

Review: Oh, I always take a great pleasure in reading each new volume featuring Stephanie Plum. It is a series that I love and although it is true that the life of our heroine does not change much, it’s always funny to see the situations in which she manages to get into. And what a joy to find Ranger and Morelli again, I missed the two men!

So we start again in a new story that will as always upset Stephanie’s life. She finds herself once again broke and must find a solution to bail out her bank account and it’s actually named Uncle Sunny! An old mobster, but the Trenton most loved man who killed another person and who must now be brought to justice. You can imagine that if everyone adores him, her search will become quite complicated. Especially while everyone would rather shoot her than help her on the case. If only she could ask Morelli for help, but besides that, Uncle Sunny is the godfather of her lover and grandmother Bella really does not take very well that the young woman is trying to find him. Yep, that means she’ll curse her several times to the chagrin of the young woman. Of course, as always, you can imagine that this is not all and on top of that, she also need to work for Ranger and attempts to discover the murderer of several elderly women. Grandma Mazur and Stephanie will therefore team up to try to unmask the killer and that means more Bingo plays, fights of all kinds and a change of job for Stephanie who will try to become a butcher (which I must say doesn’t end that well). Then we have the giraffe! Yes because there is really a giraffe on the loose in the neighborhood and Lula is determined to capture it to make it her pet. A little big right? But Lula has fallen for the beautiful beast. Problem? Nobody talks about it and everyone acts as if nothing had happened. And while the two young women will try to find the animal, despite its height, this mission seems actually quite complicated. They will also have their share of botched car, a nice fire and the most surprising thing, Stephanie trying to cook! Yes and it’s really something to see!

I admit that I was very surprised to see how all the stories were connected to each other, I did not expect that at all and I thought that it was very well done and imagined. But it is with great pleasure that we find Janet Evanovich’s ideas here. I was also quite surprised that Stephanie was thinking more and more about her future, marriage, and finally what she would do later. And even if she knows that she’s not really ready, the question is more and more present and we feel it in her discussions with Morelli and Ranger. Alala, I do not know how she manages to resist these two men always there for her. I think that she might not even survive (literally) if one of them stopped to care for her, because, given the catastrophic situations in which she ends up, she will need all the help possible. So you see, it was still a very good new volume for me and I took a great pleasure in reading everything. And as always I will read the next one when it will come out to immerse myself in this universe that always makes me smile more than once and that can be read again and again without being tired of.
