The Edge of Nowhere by Elizabeth George

Whidbey Island Saga, Book 1

Synopsis: The first young adult book by a #1 New York Times bestselling author

Whidbey Island may be only a ferry ride from Seattle, but it’s a world apart. When Becca King arrives there, she doesn’t suspect the island will become her home for the next four years. Put at risk by her ability to hear “whispers”–the thoughts of others–Becca is on the run from her stepfather, whose criminal activities she has discovered. Stranded and alone, Becca is soon befriended by Derric, a Ugandon orphan adopted by a local family; Seth, a kindhearted musician and high school dropout; Debbie, a recovering alcoholic who takes her in; and Diana, with whom Becca shares a mysterious psychic connection.

This compelling coming-of-age story, the first of an ongoing sequence of books set on Whidbey Island, has elements of mystery, the paranormal, and romance. Elizabeth George, bestselling author of the Inspector Lynley crime novels, brings her elegant style, intricate plotting, incisive characterization, and top-notch storytelling to her first book for teens.

Review: I don’t know where I got this novel, but I was curious about it. The author offers us a nice mix of thriller/ fantasy/young adult.

At first, I wasn’t expecting a young adult novel and I was a bit afraid not to get hooked because the notes on goodreads aren’t extraordinary and yet, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. I wasn’t expecting much and now I’m very curious to read more!

Hannah has always heard pieces of thoughts in people’s minds and this is something that is very difficult to deal with. But when things get out of hand, she and her mother try to disappear. Separated to be less easily found, Hannah, now Becca, finds herself in a town where the person who was supposed to take her in has just died. Left to herself, she will have to find a way to survive. But when there is an accident and everyone in town is hiding secrets, Becca is afraid her secrets will be revealed. So she’s determined to find out what happened so that all eyes can turn away from her.

I really enjoyed following the story and understanding what happened. Besides, I didn’t expect this end and the secrets revealed. And with this ending, I am very curious to see what the rest of the story has in store for us!
