Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Sthol

Caster Chronicles, Book 1

Synopsis: Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she’s struggling to conceal her power, and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.

Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town’s oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.

In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

Review: With the release of the movie and all the positive reviews that I had the opportunity to read about this book, I was really curious about this first volume. Mainly now we hear so much about it.
Lena Duchannes is a girl a little different from the others but who dreams of being accepted and live like everyone else. However, it is quite complicated to achieve this goal, especially when everyone hates her and treats her like a pariah in all circumstances. She will however be supported by a young boy who is ready to put everyone against him to stay with her: Ethan Wate. They are both bounded by something they do not really understand, dreams, visions, or even thoughts. They will discover together a whole new world full of magic, lies and duplicity. Lena has only one fear, the day of his 16 years as it will change her life. A day which is not as far as she would have liked. She knows that there are only two possibilities, she is doomed to be light to darkness. It’s a choice she is afraid if and she’ll learn the subtleties throughout the story.

It was quite a pretty cute story but it’s true that I asked myself throughout the novel where the authors wanted to lead us … Of course the answers are given in due time, but some parts are a little too long. I did not expect, however, to have several revelations, including at the end of the novel. Lena and Ethan are really cute together and we witness their adventures with pleasure. I was curious to understand their dreams and visions, because the past seemed to keep multiple secrets. We also discover many other characters just as interesting, especially Amma and Macon. I was intrigued by them from the beginning, they both hide many things and we look forward to see what it really is. We learn so many things at the end of the book, but there are still many shadows.

We can read the story fast enough, as we remain curious about the next events, but it’s true that I wasn’t thrilled as much as I would have originally thought. I was quite surprised by the end of the story, I was expecting a real conclusion, but it has not really been the case and I confess that I am a little afraid that the other novels follow the same way. But I think I’ll have to try the following to get an answer to this. It is however a pretty cute story and I’m glad to have discovered this book.
