Wicked As They Come by Delilah S. Dawson

Blud, Book 1

Synopsis: When nurse Tish Everett forced open the pesky but lovely locket she found at an estate sale, she had no idea she was answering the call of Criminy Stain, from the far off land of Sang. He’d cast a spell for her, but when she’s transported right to him, she’s not so sure she’s ready to be under the spell of another man. (It didn’t go so well last time with controlling, abusive, domineering Jeff.) If only Criminy wasn’t so deliciously rakish….

Half the inhabitants of Sang are Pinkies—human—and the other half are Bludmen, who in Tish’s world would be called vampires. But they don’t mess with any of the bat/coffin/no sunlight nonsense. They’re rather like you and me, just more fabulous, long living, and mostly indestructible. (They’re also very good kissers.) But when the evil Mayor of Manchester (formerly Bludchester) redoubles his efforts to rid Sang of the Bludmen once and for all, stealing Tish’s locket in hopes of traveling back to her world himself for reinforcements, Criminy and Tish must battle ghosts, sea monsters, wayward submarines, a secret cabal, and thundering Bludmares to get the locket back and allow Tish to return home…but has she found love with Criminy? Could she stay in Sang forever?

Review: Firstly, I would like to thank Sullivan McPig who sent me this lovely book as she wanted me to discover it. It is true that I was quite curious about the story as I know a lot of people loved it and when I saw the release of Volume 2, I thought it was time to start it.

It may have been difficult for me to get into the story at first, but it was a real pleasure to discover this new series. Tish is a woman like any other. She left her husband who abused her and returned to her hometown to take care of her grandmother. But her life is completely upside down when one day, she steals the medallion that irresistibly attracts her. A strange medallion that she was some difficulties to open, but yet despite all this strangeness, she can not let it go. And when she goes to bed like any other night, she found herself thrown directly away in a weird world: Sang. A man was waiting for her and he explains that she is the one he had been waiting for forever. You then doubt that our heroine, even if she is drawn to him, will be more than suspicious about that. And when her necklace is stolen and she is stuck in this world, she is determined to recover it at all costs! Of course, she will be accompanied by Criminy who will help her as best he can.

It was really interesting to see Tish in this novel. She is a young woman disillusioned with life and who only hopes to lead a normal existence. But her discovery of Sang and especially Criminy will change the situation. She is very brave in a world she does not know and where people and animals are far from what they seem. The world, the characters, the places are all intriguing and different. It was really fascinating to discover the universe that Delilah S. Dawson was able to create. There is thus a glimpse of Bludmen, creatures that may be related to vampires and yet are also quite different. And we also have Criminy. We can not help but fall in love with this character as he us the most fascinating. He is feared, respected but reveals his true nature when he is with Tish. He thus presents a softer, more protective and loving side. He seems prepared to do anything for our heroine and expects to win her love as well.  To that he leaves her free to do whatever she wants. I loved their interactions and how Tish falls slowly in his arms, realizing that being with him does not mean she’ll be back in a relationship like with the man who abused her.

I loved the story and the plot featured here. And it’s always interesting to understand the subtleties that remain. The machinations of the villain of the story are well found and strange and I was curious to see how it would be resolved. A very good first novel and I’m curious to see what will happen now to the next characters.
