Persuading Austen by Brigid Coady

Synopsis: It is a truth universally acknowledged that working with an ex is a terrible idea…
Annie Elliot never expected her life to turn out this way: living with her dad, working as an accountant – surely the least glamorous job in Hollywood?! – and dodging her family’s constant bickering.

Landing a job as a producer on a new adaptation of Pride and Prejudice seems like the piece of luck she’s been waiting for. Until the cast is announced, and Annie discovers that the actor playing Mr Darcy is Austen Wentworth: the man she’s spent nearly a decade trying to forget.

Not only is Austen her ex – but while Annie’s life has stalled, Austen is Hollywood’s hottest property…and has just been voted World’s Sexiest Man.

With nowhere to hide, there’s just one question. Now the one who got away has come back, should Annie stand by her pride? Or give into Austen’s powers of persuasion?

Review: It’s been a long time since I’ve read a Jane Austen retelling, so when I saw the novel, I thought it was a good opportunity to discover a new story with an author I didn’t know yet.

Annie Elliot is flourishing in her professional life, but her family’s life is a disaster. Yes, because she is the scapegoat of her family and she is obliged to do everything for them without them showing her the slightest gratitude and moreover, they spend all her money. It’s really not easy and Annie never manages to say no. However, a professional opportunity will present itself and our heroine may be able to evolve! But her life turns into a nightmare when she has to work with Austen Wentworth, the man she broke the heart with and who broke her heart years before. Their meetings will not be easy, that has to be said.

I really had a really good time with this novel. If the beginning reminded me a lot of Cinderella, we quickly found the framework of Pride and Prejudice and I found that the author’s ideas were really well thought out. It was also a very touching story and if we want Annie to finally rebel, I was sad for her several times.

It was a very nice Jane Austen cover version that took me from start to finish. A good discovery.

  1. This sounds like a good story. I like your comparisons to Cinderella and Pride and Prejudice. I’m glad that Annie builds a backbone and stops letting her family take advantage of her and treat her badly! I Just read a really good Pride and Prejudice Retelling myself. Those are so much fun and romantic!
