The Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman

Lady Helen, Book 1

Synopsis: London, April 1812.

On the eve of eighteen-year-old Lady Helen Wrexhall’s presentation to the queen, one of her family’s housemaids disappears-and Helen is drawn into the shadows of Regency London. There, she meets Lord Carlston, one of the few who can stop the perpetrators: a cabal of demons infiltrating every level of society. Dare she ask for his help, when his reputation is almost as black as his lingering eyes? And will her intelligence and headstrong curiosity wind up leading them into a death trap?

Review: This is a novel I had heard of and I was delighted that my friend gave it to me so that I could finally discover it.

Helen lost her parents and has been living with her aunt and uncle ever since, but it’s not so easy and she dreams of moving away and living her life away from them. But then, when Lord Carlston returns to town, with a sultry reputation, she doesn’t expect her life to be turned upside down. Indeed, he is a member of the Bad Days Club, a club that takes care of the creatures in town taking advantage and kill people. It seems that Helen has special skills that may allow her to fit in with this group. But does she really want to? Besides, it’s also a good time for her to find a husband and she might have an idea about that.

It was a very nice novel set in the twentieth century and the touch of fantasy is quite different and original. I had a good time with the story and the characters and I must admit I’m quite curious to see what happens now after such an ending!
