The Last Flight by Julie Clark

Synopsis: Claire Cook has a perfect life. But behind closed doors, nothing is quite as it seems. That perfect husband has a temper that burns as bright as his promising political career, and he’s not above using his staff to track Claire’s every move. But what he doesn’t know is that Claire has worked for months on a plan to vanish.

A chance meeting in an airport bar brings her together with a woman whose circumstances seem equally dire. Together they make a last-minute decision to switch tickets ― Claire taking Eva’s flight to Oakland, and Eva traveling to Puerto Rico as Claire. But when the flight to Puerto Rico goes down, Claire realizes it’s no longer a head start but a new life. Cut off, out of options, with the news of her death about to explode in the media, Claire will assume Eva’s identity, and along with it, the secrets Eva fought so hard to keep hidden.

Review: I didn’t know the author or the novel, but I’m always looking for thrillers, so I was curious to find out more about this one.

Claire is married to a very influential man. But this man treats her badly. She would like to leave him, she has tried before, but it didn’t end well for her. This time, she has a plan, she will succeed… until he upsets all her plans. We follow in parallel, Eva, a young woman whose past we discover little by little throughout the novel. Eva will offer Claire an alternative: she proposes to exchange their plane tickets at the airport. What Claire doesn’t know is that the plane she was supposed to take initially will crash. While our heroine reinvents a new life for herself, she will soon discover that the past always catches up with everyone.

This was a pretty cool thriller, even if it can get a little long at times. I was a little less enthralled with Eva’s story, but I loved learning more about Claire, seeing her survive, or at least try, even though nothing is easy for her.

A good read.
