Review: Courtney Milan presents here a lovely little historical atypical romance. How not to succumb to the new ideas that have been introduced in this story with this unique heroine who has built herself a gilded cage.

Jane Fairfiels is not a young woman like the others, she is what is called a “bastard” but also a very intelligent rich woman. Something that could be very interesting for one person may prove to be a mortal enemy for a woman who does not wish to marry. Indeed, trying to be present for her sister, until her majority, Jane has the duty to prevent any wedding proposal to protect her junior. This is a full time job when we see how the tutor takes care of the girl, locking her permanently in his house, stopping her from having friends and constantly trying to find her all sorts of doctors to treat her little known evil. It is not an easy task for Jane, but even if our heroine does not really have talents in society, she accentuates her nature to become the most hateful person. In addition to this, she continually wears hideous outfits that are now famous. But now, her plans change when she meets with Olivier, a different man who seems to realize that she could be much more than that but also a man who could do what he dreams of if he manages to publicly and permanently humiliate our dear Jane.

I took a lot of pleasure to follow Jane, it’s a different heroine of the one we usually find in historical romance. The young woman is strong, courageous even if all she does is very difficult … Nevertheless, it is really not easy when we see that she must also confront the terrible remarks of the persons evolving around her. But it is also why she does not change who she is and what she has to wear to suit the company. And finally we have Oliver … It is difficult to identify this man and I must say that he does not know himself how to act in light of the choices available to him. All this, is further complicated when a certain attraction is created between him and Jane. Alas, it is not possible for him to marry a young woman who does not behave herself and who does not hesitate to dress this way, all his politician plans would be seriously affected.

It was a very good novel and even if it’s true that I did not necessarily connect to the first, I was thrilled by this second volume. It was a real pleasure to see some important events here as the laws of parliament, ethnic marriages, the desire of women to become more than what they can be. Yes, we easily find some great themes in the chapters.

As you can see, a new very good novel and I am curious to know what we’ll find later.

Résumé : Miss Jane Fairfield est une originale et se moque de l’opinion publique. Mr Oliver Marshall souhaite, au contraire, s’attirer les bonnes grâces de chacun, car il veut se consacrer à la politique. Le moindre faux pas peut être fatal pour sa carrière. Mais lorsqu’il rencontre l’audacieuse Jane, il ne peut résister à son charme. Cependant, la vie qu’il s’est choisie ne lui permet pas d’épouser quelqu’un de gauche et maladroit. Lui demandera-t-il de changer et de se conformer à la société au risque de perdre la flamme que la jeune femme a su allumer en lui ?

Avis : Courtney Milan nous présente ici une jolie petite romance historique aux allures atypiques. Comment ne pas succomber aux idées nouvelles qui ont été introduites dans cette histoire avec cette héroïne unique qui s’est forgé une cage dorée.

Jane Fairfiels n’est pas une jeune femme comme les autres, c’est ce que l’on appelle une « batarde » mais aussi une femme très intelligente et pleine d’argent. Quelque chose qui pourrait être très intéressant pour une personne seule, peut se révéler être un ennemi mortel pour une femme qui ne désire pas se marier. En effet, essayant d’être présente pour sa sœur, jusqu’à sa majorité, Jane est dans le devoir d’empêcher ne serait-ce qu’une demande de mariage pour protéger sa cadette. C’est un travail à temps complet quand on voit comment le tuteur s’occupe de la jeune fille, l’enfermant de façon permanente dans sa demeure, l’empêchant d’avoir des amies et essayant sans cesse de lui trouver toutes sortes de médecins pour soigner son mal peu connu. Ce n’est pas mince affaire pour Jane, mais même si notre héroïne n’a pas vraiment de talents en société, elle accentue ses travers pour devenir la personne la plus détestable. En plus de cela, elle porte continuellement des tenues hideuses qui font maintenant sa renommée. Mais voilà, ses plans changent le jour où elle rencontre Olivier, un homme différent et qui semble se rendre compte qu’elle pourrait être bien plus que cela mais aussi un homme à qui on a proposé de réaliser les rêves les plus fous s’il parvient à humilier publiquement et de façon permanente notre chère Jane.

J’ai beaucoup pris de plaisir à suivre Jane, c’est une héroïne différente de ce qu’on retrouve habituellement en romance historique. La jeune femme est forte, courageuse même si tout ce qu’elle entreprend est très difficile…Pourtant, ce n’est vraiment aisé quand on voit qu’elle doit aussi affronter les terribles remarques des gens évoluant autour d’elle. Mais c’est aussi pour cela qu’elle ne changera pas non plus qui elle est et ce qu’elle est pour convenir à la société. Et enfin nous avons Oliver… C’est difficile de cerner cet homme et il faut dire qu’il ne sait lui-même pas comment agir au vu des choix qui lui sont proposés. Tout cela se complique encore plus quand une certaine attirance se créée entre lui et Jane. Hélas, il n’est pas possible pour lui d’épouser une jeune femme qui ne sait pas bien se tenir et qui n’hésite pas à s’habiller de la sorte, tous ses plans de politicien en seraient gravement touchés.

C’était un très bon roman et même si c’est vrai que je n’avais pas forcément accroché au premier, j’ai été ravie par ce second volet. C’était un réel plaisir de voir certains événements importants ici comme des lois du parlement, les mariages ethniques, l’envie des femmes de devenir plus que ce qu’elles ne peuvent être. Oui, on retrouve facilement de très bons thèmes au cours des chapitres.

Vous l’aurez compris, un nouveau très bon roman et je suis curieuse de savoir ce que la suite donnera à présent.

Review: I heard a lot of great things about the Courtney Milan’s historical romances and when I saw this new series, I admit that I was very intrigued. So I started happily with this first volume.

Minnie is a young woman who hides her past as best as she can, that’s also why she has changed her name. But the only way for her to be really safe would be to find a husband … alas, is it really the solution? The fact that she is trying to be a person she isn’t, gives a different image of her nature to the persons around her. While she has a great determination, many desires, she passes for a young silence woman, a malleable and insignificant mouse. It’s pretty sad that see what people think about her, and yet she is far from that. But while some are closer to the truth, attempting to delve into her past, Minnie crosses the path of a duke, someone well beyond what she could expect but which nevertheless seems very interested in her.

Mixing with the workers’ revolution and tracts to help the poor people conditions over a period which is governed by the privileges, gave a very interesting story. It was not necessarily a theme that I expected there but it was very interesting to learn more about it. As for the characters, Robert, our beloved Duke is a really likeable character. He is true, natural and, above all, trying not to look like his father, but when he meets with Minnie, everything will change. Minnie will have to face her past here, the choice of her parents and she will finally allow herself to believe in a better life where she would be recognized for the person she truly is.

I was very surprised by the revelations about the Minnie’s past! The author had very good ideas and it’s true that we do not imagine for a single second about the truth. All this makes us feel the pains of our heroine elsewhere and we fully understand some of her strange behavior. She had not had an easy life and it’s true that we hope all along that everything will work out for her.

It was a good first book and I admit that I’m curious to see how the others will be.

Résumé : Désirant échapper à un passé scandaleux, Miss Minerva Lane, jeune femme discrète, se réfugie dans une petite bourgade sans histoire. Mais lorsque le séduisant et perspicace duc de Clermont s installe dans le voisinage, Minnie se sent menacée. Intrigué par la jeune femme, il se doute que de lourds secrets se cachent derrière cette attitude énigmatique et il est bien décidé à les découvrir. Mais cette fois, il ne sera peut-être pas de taille face à un tel adversaire…

Avis : J’ai entendu énormément de bien des romances historiques de Courtney Milan et quand j’ai vu cette toute nouvelle série, j’avoue que j’ai été très intriguée. Je me suis donc lancée avec plaisir avec ce premier tome.

Minnie est une jeune femme qui cache son passé du mieux qu’elle le peut, c’est d’ailleurs pour cela qu’elle a changé de nom. Mais le seul moyen pour elle d’être vraiment en sécurité serait de se trouver un mari… hélas, est-ce véritablement la solution ? Le fait de passer pour une personne qu’elle n’est pas laisse une impression différente aux yeux des gens qui l’entourent. Alors qu’elle possède une grande détermination, de nombreuses envies, elle passe pour une jeune femme effacée, une souris malléable et insignifiante. C’est assez triste que les gens pensent ça d’elle, et pourtant, elle est très loin de tout cela. Mais alors que certains se rapprochent de la vérité, en essayant de fouiller dans son passé, Minnie va croiser la route d’un duc, quelqu’un bien au-delà de ce qu’elle pourrait espérer mais qui pourtant semble très intéressé par elle.

Le mélange avec la révolution ouvrière et les tracs pour aider les conditions des plus pauvres au cours d’une époque qui est régie par les privilèges, était très intéressant. Ce n’était pas forcément un thème auquel je m’attendais mais c’était très intéressant d’en apprendre plus à ce sujet. Pour ce qui est des personnages, Robert, notre cher Duc est un personnage vraiment attachant. Il est vrai et naturel et essaie plus que tout de ne pas ressembler à son père, mais voilà que sa rencontre avec Minnie va chambouler sa vie. Minnie elle va devoir faire face à son passé ici, aux choix de ses parents et va finalement s’autoriser à croire en une vie meilleure où elle serait reconnue pour la personne qu’elle est véritablement.

J’ai été très surprise par les révélations sur le passé de Minnie ! L’auteure a eu de très bonnes idées et c’est vrai qu’on ne s’imagine pas une seule seconde de la vérité. Tout cela nous fait ressentir vraiment beaucoup de peine pour notre héroïne d’ailleurs et on comprend alors parfaitement certains de ses comportements un peu étranges. Elle n’a pas eu une vie très facile et c’est vrai que l’on espère tout du long que tout s’arrangera pour elle.

C’était un bon premier tome et j’avoue que je suis curieuse de voir ce que la suite donnera à présent.
