The Beast Charmer, Book 1

Synopsis: Exiled beast charmer Leena Edenfrell is in deep trouble. Review: I heard about this novel when it came out and was thrilled when someone gave it to me. So I gladly jumped in. But I discovered something very surprising: the author wrote this novel which is an adult fantasy before republishing it by changing the age of the characters so that it becomes a young adult one. After that, the series continued to be published in YA. At this time, there are no plans for the author to write the sequel in adult.

Leena is on the run, but she hopes to make her council see that she is innocent of what she is accused of. But when a guild is sent after her to kill her, she has no option but to make a deal with them to stay alive.

I really liked the world that the author offers in this novel with Charmers holding all sorts of creatures that they are bound to. It’s quite touching to see their relationship. The connections between the guild characters are also great, but I was a little disappointed with the romance, which I think is a bit of a miss. Everything is way too easy, even though the characters are supposed to be enemies.

That aside, it was a fun novel. And I wonder what the sequel has in store.

Ses poches vides l’ont obligée à vendre ses chères bêtes magiques au marché noir – un délit passible de mort – et sa tête est désormais mise à prix. Le plus talentueux des tueurs à gages du royaume est à ses trousses et Leena lui fait une offre qu’il ne peut refuser : de puissantes créatures mythiques en échange de sa vie.

Si seulement c’était aussi simple… Mais à l’insu de Leena, ces personnes sont liées par la magie pour remplir leur contrat, et Noc ne peut pas risquer sa confrérie d’assassins… même pas pour sauver la femme sans laquelle il ne peut plus vivre.

Avis : J’avais entendu parler de ce roman à sa sortie et j’ai été ravie quand on me l’a offert. Je me suis donc lancée avec plaisir dedans. Mais j’ai découvert quelque chose de très étonnant : l’auteure a écrit ce roman qui est une fantasy adulte avant de le republier en modifiant l’âge des personnages pour qu’il devienne du young adult. Suite à ça, la série a continué à être publiée en YA. Pour le moment, il n’est pas prévu que l’auteure écrive la suite en adulte.

Leena est en fuite, mais elle espère faire voir à son conseil qu’elle est innocente de ce dont on l’accuse. Mais quand une guilde est envoyée à ses trousses pour la tuer, elle n’a pas d’autre option que de passer un marché avec eux pour rester en vie.

J’ai beaucoup aimé l’univers que l’auteure propose dans ce roman avec des Charmeurs qui détiennent toutes sortes de créatures auxquelles ils sont liés. C’est assez touchant de voir leur relation. Les liens entre les personnages de la guilde sont aussi supers, mais j’ai été un peu déçue avec la romance qui, je pense, est un peu ratée. Tout est beaucoup trop facile, alors que les personnages sont censés être ennemis.

Ceci mis à part, c’était un roman sympa. Et je me demande ce que la suite réserve.

Gargoyle Queen, Book 1

Gemma tries to steer clear of the handsome prince, but when she finds herself behind enemy lines, she reluctantly joins forces with Leo. Also coming to Gemma’s aid is Grimley, her beloved gargoyle.

Despite the fact that Andvari and Morta are old, bitter enemies, a dangerous attraction sparks between Gemma and Leo. Further complicating matters is Leo’s murderous family, especially Queen Maeven Morricone, the mastermind behind the infamous Seven Spire massacre.

The closer Gemma gets to the stolen tearstone, the more deadly plots she uncovers. Everyone is trying to capture the crown, but only one queen can sit on the throne…

Review: I loved the first trilogy and I couldn’t wait to discover this series that takes place in the same world, but follows secondary characters. To tell you the truth, I was thrilled to discover the story of Gemma and Leonidas.

Everybody thinks Gemma is a spoiled princess who is only interested in the mundane. But this is just a facade and our heroine hopes to be what Everleigh is to her people. It is not simple and in secret, she plays spy. Her latest mission: to find out why the gems in her mines are disappearing without a trace. And this quest could be much more dangerous than expected! And what to do when Leonidas, the man who betrayed her when she was younger and who is her mortal enemy, takes her to his castle where anyone would kill her if they learned who she is? She has to keep her secret while trying to figure out where the gems are disappearing. Something unites Gemma and Leo, but will it be enough to forget that they are enemies? And more importantly, what will he say when he learns who she really is?

It was a great novel again, and I loved seeing the evolution of our heroine. She does everything in her power to help her kingdom, even if her life is in danger. She’s going to have to make choices, face her feelings and most importantly survive! I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Elle doit pourtant apprendre… Mais son personnage soigneusement élaboré n’est qu’une façade : Gemma est une magicienne de l’esprit puissante et une espionne, et elle ne veut pas que ça se sache.

Gemma est sous couverture et essaie de découvrir qui vole de grandes quantités de pierres précieuses dans l’une des mines royales de Ripley lorsqu’elle rencontre le prince Leonidas Morricone de Morta, son ennemi mortel. Elle tente d’éviter le beau prince, mais lorsqu’elle se retrouve derrière les lignes ennemies, elle s’allie à contrecœur à lui. Gemma se fait également aider par Grimley, sa gargouille bien-aimée.

Bien qu’Andvari et Morta soient de vieux ennemis acharnés, une dangereuse attirance s’installe entre Gemma et Leo. La famille meurtrière de Leo, en particulier la reine Maeven Morricone, le cerveau du tristement célèbre massacre des Sept Flèches, complique encore les choses.

En se rapprochant des pierres volées, Gemma découvre des complots meurtriers. Tout le monde essaie de s’emparer de la couronne, mais une seule reine peut s’asseoir sur le trône…

Avis : J’avais adoré la première trilogie et j’étais impatiente de découvrir cette série qui se déroule dans le même monde, mais qui suit des personnages secondaires. Pour tout vous dire, j’étais ravie de découvrir l’histoire de Gemma et de Leonidas.

Tout le monde prend Gemma pour une princesse pourrie gâtée qui ne s’intéresse qu’aux mondanités. Mais ce n’est qu’une façade et notre héroïne espère pouvoir être ce qu’Everleigh est pour son peuple. Ce n’est pas simple et en cachette, elle joue les apprenties espionnes. Sa dernière mission : découvrir pourquoi les pierres précieuses de ses mines disparaissent sans laisser de traces. Et cette quête pourrait bien être bien plus dangereuse que prévue ! Et que faire quand Leonidas, l’homme qui l’a trahie quand elle était plus jeune et qui est son ennemi mortel, l’emmène dans son château où quiconque la tuerait s’ils apprenaient qui elle est ? Il faut qu’elle garde son secret tout en essayant de comprendre où les pierres précieuses disparaissent. Quelque chose unit Gemma et Leo, mais est-ce que ça sera suffisant pour oublier qu’ils sont ennemis ? Et surtout, que dira-t-il quand il apprendra qui elle est vraiment ?

C’était à nouveau un super roman et j’ai adoré voir l’évolution de notre héroïne. Elle fait tout ce qui est en son pouvoir pour aider son royaume, même si sa vie est en danger. Elle va devoir faire des choix, affronter ses sentiments et surtout survivre ! Je suis impatiente de découvrir la suite !

The Goblin Emperor, Book 2

Synopsis: Katherine Addison returns to the glittering world she created for her beloved novel, The Goblin Emperor, in this stand-alone sequel.

When the young half-goblin emperor Maia sought to learn who had set the bombs that killed his father and half-brothers, he turned to an obscure resident of his father’s Court, a Prelate of Ulis and a Witness for the Dead. Thara Celehar found the truth, though it did him no good to discover it. He lost his place as a retainer of his cousin the former Empress, and made far too many enemies among the many factions vying for power in the new Court. The favor of the Emperor is a dangerous coin.

Now Celehar lives in the city of Amalo, far from the Court though not exactly in exile. He has not escaped from politics, but his position gives him the ability to serve the common people of the city, which is his preference. He lives modestly, but his decency and fundamental honestly will not permit him to live quietly. As a Witness for the Dead, he can, sometimes, speak to the recently dead: see the last thing they saw, know the last thought they had, experience the last thing they felt. It is his duty use that ability to resolve disputes, to ascertain the intent of the dead, to find the killers of the murdered.

Now Celehar’s skills lead him out of the quiet and into a morass of treachery, murder, and injustice. No matter his own background with the imperial house, Celehar will stand with the commoners, and possibly find a light in the darkness.

Katherine Addison has created a fantastic world for these books – wide and deep and true.

Review: I thought I had read the first volume, but I quickly realized that I had not. I hesitated before jumping into the story because I was afraid of being lost, especially in a fantasy world, but since the author specifies that it’s a standalone, I thought it was worth a try. Finally, if I think it can be interesting to read the first volume to have the basics of the universe and the characters, I had a good time.

We discover Thara Celehar, a witness of the dead, who has the gift of being able to see the last moments of a person’s life. This is how he witnesses the murder of a young woman, one that everyone thought had drowned. Determined to discover the truth, he tries to understand what happened and follows the path of the young woman. This is how he will learn that the young woman was hiding many secrets.

This was a pretty cool novel with the same thread as a suspense novel and I enjoyed following the main character’s investigation. I need to discover the first volume to see what I missed.

The Goblin Emperor, Tome  2

Aujourd’hui, Celehar vit dans la ville d’Amalo, loin de la Cour, mais pas vraiment en exil. Il n’a pas échappé à la politique, mais sa position lui permet de servir le peuple de la ville, ce qu’il préfère. Il vit modestement, mais sa droiture et son honnêteté fondamentale ne lui permettent pas de vivre tranquillement. En tant que témoin des morts, il peut parfois parler aux morts : voir la dernière chose qu’ils ont vue, connaître la dernière pensée qu’ils ont eue, ressentir la dernière émotion qu’ils ont ressentie. Il est de son devoir d’utiliser cette capacité pour résoudre des conflits, pour déterminer les intentions des morts, pour trouver les meurtriers de ceux qui ont été assassinés.

Aujourd’hui, les compétences de Celehar le conduisent dans un marécage de trahisons, de meurtre et d’injustice. Quel que soit son passé au sein de la maison impériale, Celehar se tiendra aux côtés des roturiers et trouvera peut-être une lumière dans les ténèbres.

Avis : Je pensais avoir lu le premier tome, mais je me suis vite rendu compte que ce n’était pas le cas. J’ai hésité avant de me lancer dans l’histoire parce que j’ai eu peur d’être perdue, surtout dans un monde de fantasy mais comme l’auteure spécifie que c’est un standalone, je me suis dit que c’était à tenter. Finalement, si je pense qu’il peut être intéressant de lire le premier tome pour avoir les bases de l’univers et des personnages, j’ai passé un bon moment.

Nous découvrons Thara Celehar, un témoin de morts, qui a le don de pouvoir voir les derniers moments de vie d’une personne. C’est ainsi qu’il assiste au meurtre d’une jeune femme, une que tout le monde pensait s’être noyée. Déterminé à découvrir la vérité, il va chercher à comprendre ce qui s’est passé et va suivre le parcours de la jeune femme. C’est ainsi qu’il va apprendre que la jeune femme cachait de nombreux secrets.

C’était un roman assez sympa sur le même fil conducteur qu’un roman de suspense et j’ai pris plaisir à suivre l’enquête du personnage principal. Il me faudrait, je pense, découvrir le premier tome pour voir ce qui m’a manquée.

Review: I had a great time with the first two novels and was curious to see the conclusion of the story between Con and Lia. They’ve both been through a lot and I was wondering how they were going to get through the last events.

Lia has beaten death, but that doesn’t mean she’s okay. She’s having a hard time getting back to who she was, who everyone expects her to be. But Calanthe is on the brink and she has no choice: she must act or she will lose everything! As for Con, he is still driven by his desire for revenge, but he will have to decide if it is more important than anything else.

This is the final confrontation, the conclusion of a saga that I enjoyed discovering. I loved following Lia and Con. They will do everything to move forward and achieve their goals, something that will be far from easy. It was a very good trilogy!
