Review: Susannah Sandlin has two different and very interesting series and I admit that I was curious to read this new one. I think this new book is very different from what she has written so far and although we have some supernatural aspects here, it was intriguing to have it in the background over the story. I found it interesting to have for once a human hero in the midst of creatures of all kinds. Despite his lack of powers, our hero is great to meet and discover. And like for her other books, this one does not disappoint and it was a real pleasure to read it. But what about the story exactly?

Kell is a ranger who leads a rather unusual team. I must say that it is not always easy to be at the head of shapeshifters when he is not one himself. Yet he controls everyone the best he can, with his years of experience. But the new mission will change his life. Infiltrated in a suspected organization they think as a terrorist group because of a bomb exploded in the governor’s place, our hero did not expect to fall in love with their leader: Mori Chastaine. Yet he is convinced that it has nothing to do with her, but he also knows that Mori has a big secret, and Kell will have to see through to understand what is really happening.

I admit that I was curious to understand what was really going on with Mori. She is a very private woman who has trouble to open herself up to others and yet she could use some help. We discover her gradually throughout the novel, as well as her many secrets. I confess that I did not expect about some of them. Our heart breaks while thinking about everything she undergoes to help innocent people at risk. Kell quickly falls in love with this girl … and I admit that this has bothered me a little but Susannah leads perfectly her story and allows us to quickly forget this fact. I waited to see how far he was ready to go to charm her and what he would do to save her because it was really not an easy task.

It was a good story and for once it is not really based on the extraordinary abilities of the characters of the novel. Full of action, love and evil, this is an enjoyable read.

Une vie à cacher sa vraie nature l’avertit que Kell pourrait ne pas être ce qu’il semble. Mais il pourrait être le seul à pouvoir sauver les humains pour qu’ils ne deviennent pas des pions d’un ancien jeu de puissance paranormale. Si Mori révèle son secret, Kell rejoindra-t-il son combat ? Ou va-elle devenir sa prochaine cible ?

Avis : Susannah Sandlin possède deux séries des plus intéressantes et j’avoue que j’étais curieuse de lire cette nouvelle. Je trouve que c’est très différent de ce qu’elle a écrit jusqu’à présent et bien que l’on ait des aspects surnaturels ici, j’ai trouvé que tout était en retrait par rapport à l’histoire. J’ai trouvé intéressant d’avoir pour une fois un héro humain au milieu de créatures de toutes sortes. Car malgré son manque de pouvoirs, notre héro un très intéressant à suivre et découvrir. Mais comme pour ses autres livres, celui-ci ne déçoit pas et c’était un réel plaisir de le lire. Mais qu’en est-il de l’histoire exactement ?

Kell est un ranger qui mène une équipe assez atypique. Il faut dire que ce n’est pas toujours facile d’être à la tête de changes formes quand il n’en est pas un lui-même. Pourtant il contrôle tout le monde du mieux qu’il peut grâce à ses années d’expériences mais leur nouvelle mission va changer sa vie. Infiltré au sein d’une organisation suspectée d’avoir fait exploser une bombe où résidait le gouverneur, notre héros ne s’attendait pas à tomber sous le charme de la dirigeante Mori Chastaine. Pourtant il est persuadé qu’elle n’y est pour rien, mais Mori garde plus d’un secret, et Kell va devoir les percer à jour pour comprendre ce qu’il se passe réellement.

J’avoue que j’étais curieuse de comprendre ce qui se passait vraiment avec Mori. C’est une femme très secrète qui a du mal à s’ouvrir aux autres et pourtant elle aurait bien besoin d’aide. On la découvre petit à petit tout au long du roman, de même que ses nombreux secrets. J’avoue que je ne m’attendais pas à découvrir certains. Notre cœur se brise en pensant à tout ce qu’elle subit pour aider les personnes innocentes menacées. Kell tombe très vite amoureux de la jeune femme… j’avoue que ce fait m’a un peu embêté mais Susannah mène parfaitement son histoire et nous permet d’oublier assez vite ce fait. J’attendais de voir jusqu’où il était prêt à aller pour la charmer et ce qu’il allait faire pour la sauver car ce n’était vraiment pas simple à faire.

C’était une bonne histoire qui pour une fois ne s’appuie pas vraiment sur les capacités extraordinaires des personnages du roman. Plein d’action, de l’amour et un méchant très bien réalisé, c’est une lecture agréable.
