Belle Chasse by Suzanne Johnson

Sentinels of New Orleans, Book 5

Synopsis: With the wizard-elven treaty on the verge of collapse, the preternatural world stands on the brink of war. Unless former wizard sentinel DJ Jaco manages to keep the elven leader, Quince Randolph, focused on peace and not personal matters.

With no one on the throne, Faerie is in chaos, with rival princes battling for power. The still-undead pirate, Jean Lafitte, is building his own army of misfits, and DJ—stripped of her job and hiding in the Beyond to avoid the death sentence handed down by the wizard Council of Elders—can’t get anywhere near her beloved New Orleans or her significant something-or-other, Alex.

It’s time to choose sides. Friends will become enemies, enemies will become allies, and not everyone will survive. DJ and her friends will learn a hard lesson: sometimes, even the ultimate sacrifice isn’t enough.

Review:  I could not wait to dive into this new story even if it is true that I was a little anxious to see if the story would keep its panache after so many novels. Still, I had a great time with the story as it is full of action and tension to keep us immersed in the novel waiting to see what will happen.

So we find our dear DJ after all the events of the previous book as she is finally forced to flee and hide in Old New Orleans not to get caught by those who seek her. Assisted by Jean Laffite who is determined to turn this new story to his advantage and of course by Rene, Jake and Eugenie, DJ needs to decide on her next steps. Yet all the species must manage their problems … the fae must choose a king and the two brothers are at war to win that right, the elves and especially Rand wishes to take Eugenie back with him, the sorcerers want to take power and DJ seems to be the scapegoat in all these cases.

You understand that many events are held here, leading gradually to a general war that seems about to explode and all the characters must choose sides, whether they like it or not. And what about Jean? I love him!

I really had a great time with the story and I let myself be carried away easily by all the chapters. As I said, many events are set in motion here and I’m anxious to see what will happen later now. It’s hard to say more without revealing too much but it was interesting to see who the allies would be, and who the enemies would become. A very good story once again and I am impatient to see DJ and her friends again!

Belle Chasse de Suzanne Johnson (VO)

Sentinels of New Orleans, Tome 5

Pirateship Down by Suzanne Johnson

Sentinels of New Orleans, Book 4.5

Synopsis: French pirate Jean Lafitte is tall, cobalt-eyed, broad-shouldered and immortal. What’s not to love? But New Orleans’ most esteemed member of the historical undead is headed for trouble: He’s determined to reclaim Le Diligent, his gold-laden schooner lost at sea in 1814 and recently found at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico near Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana.
The U.S. Coast Guard might beg to differ.

New Orleans’ wizard sentinel DJ Jaco and her merman friend Rene Delachaise can either lock Lafitte up or save him from himself, joining him on a road trip to Cajun country. Terrebonne Parish—not to mention its jail—might never be the same after the events of the all-new novella Pirateship Down.

Wizards and Cajun mermen, sexy shifters and undead French pirates. Welcome to the world of the Sentinels of New Orleans in this first collection of new and revised stories, along with a little Louisiana lagniappe.

Review:
Talk like a pirate
We find a story which is a nice prequel and where we find our dear Jean. This is not necessarily very long but it was a pleasure to find character and to see that he was capable of a lot to get what he wants. We spend a great time once again!

Lagniappe: The Sentinels Multiverse
This is not really a story but a small catalog of the entire universe of the series and specifically regarding the varied creatures that can be found. It was interesting to see this part of the story with all these categories.

Alex, the Pig
While reading the introduction of the story and while seeing that the story was written for my friend Carien, I was quite touched for her. And of course, with that in mind, I could only appreciate these pages featuring a little pig (If you know about Carien, you will understand the reference).

Cat Mon Dieu
It was a pretty funny story featuring our beloved Jean as well as Drusilla. To help her, Jean is looking for cat food except that the pirate has a funny image of what it should be! A very good moment!

Lagniappe: Jean Laffite – The man, the myth, the undead pirate
The author had already written several guest posts for our blog about Jean Laffite and it’s true that it’s always nice to know some facts about the real character!

Rivalry
We find this time a little story about Jake and Alex and even more about their past. We know very little about their youth, but it was interesting to discover and to understand Alex a little better. It was not necessarily easy for him ….

Swamp Rats
This time, Drusilla is highlighted in a new novella who stages her with other characters. A deleted scene from one of the volumes that I took a pleasure to discover.

Danger: Curves Ahead
Another short story, again with Drusilla but also with Alex and it’s always a pleasure to see them as always.

Lagniappe: A Bibliography Sentinels
It is a very short explanation, a small catalog of the novels that inspired the author of her universe.

Intervention
As said at the beginning of the novella, that story features Jake and Alex, but especially their love for one another. Alex at difficult times, the poor choice of his cousin in professional or personal matters. Besides, her will try to help him regarding his girlfriend appears to be a succubus.

Pirateship Down
Suzanne presents here a longer story and therefore a most complete one. We find with a great pleasure Jean, Drusilla and of course Rene. It was nice to see them launched into a new adventure! It must be said that Jean is determined enough and this time he wants his newly discovered ship and nothing can stop him! It was very funny to see him act, particularly in relation to the people who do not know who he is. A very good story again!

Avis :

Talk like a pirate

Lagniappe : The Sentinels Multiverse

Alex, the Pig

Lagniappe : Jean Laffite – The man, the myth, the undead pirate

Lagniappe : A Sentinels Bibliography

Pirateship Down

Pirate’s Alley by Suzanne Johnson

Sentinels of New Orleans, Book 4

Synopsis: Wizard sentinel DJ Jaco thought she had gotten used to the chaos of her life in post-Katrina New Orleans, but a new threat is looming, one that will test every relationship she holds dear.

Caught in the middle of a rising struggle between the major powers in the supernatural world—the Wizards, Elves, Vampires and the Fae—DJ finds her loyalties torn and her mettle tested in matters both professional and personal.

Her relationship with enforcer Alex Warin is shaky, her non-husband, Quince Randolph, is growing more powerful, and her best friend, Eugenie, has a bombshell that could blow everything to Elfheim and back. And that’s before the French pirate, Jean Lafitte, newly revived from his latest “death,” returns to New Orleans with vengeance on his mind. DJ’s assignment? Keep the sexy leader of the historical undead out of trouble. Good luck with that.

Duty clashes with love, loyalty with deception, and friendship with responsibility as DJ navigates passion and politics in the murky waters of a New Orleans caught in the grips of a brutal winter that might have nothing to do with Mother Nature.

War could be brewing, and DJ will be forced to take a stand. But choosing sides won’t be that easy.

Review: It’s been a while, I admit it, that I was waiting for some new adventures from our beloved DJ. Oh yes, I had even forgotten about some events but everything came back rather quickly after the first chapters. What a pleasure to find all the characters from the previous volumes and to discover a new story. I’m sure that you’re wondering if the volume is up to the others and I can tell you now that this is the case! So yes if you liked the series so far, you will not be disappointed because Suzanne Johnson still has many ideas for us.

Let’s go back a little more to the story … DJ has a lot to manage and nothing will get better, oh no, that’s for sure! Indeed, she must make some important choices that will severely impact on her life. While it’s hard to create a real relationship with Alex, to overcome their problems, their trust is now put to the test here. Alex has an unwavering loyalty compared to his bosses while Drusilla prefer to think and act as best as she can … Unfortunately for her, she is sometimes forced to lie to her lover who does not necessarily would place her first. In addition to this, our heroine is also forced to deal with her feelings towards our pirate. Ah Jean … How not to fall under his spell and I admit that I was passionate about their conversations and scenes. To complicate matters, we also have Randolph, our elf with an oversized ego … Randolph, Randolph … it’s hard to love this character and yet sometimes our heart softens for him to start to hate him once again. I’ll let you discover the reasons for all this.

A war is brewing, different species are starting to take side to know with whom to ally. This is a fairly difficult environment to manage, but it was very interesting to see the actions of the characters. I really enjoyed seeing that DJ is realizing that nothing is black or white and that she is sometimes forced to make decisions alone even if it puts her in undesirable positions. New players come into play, especially with the faes and I admit that I’m curious to see what will happen afterwards. There are a lot of things going on in this novel and I was quite surprised to see the situations in which DJ is found. I must say that everyone is trying to accuse her of their problems.

I will not go into too many details because it would be easy to tell everything but I can tell you that I loved the novel once again. The end also triggers a lot of new problems and I’m very curious to see how our heroes are going to go out of all that again. A really good read!

Pirate’s Alley de Suzanne Johnson (VO)

Sentinels of New Orleans, Tome 4

Elysian Fields by Suzanne Johnson

Sentinels of New Orleans, Book 3

Synopsis: An undead serial killer comes for DJ in this thrilling third installment of Suzanne Johnson’s Sentinels of New Orleans series

The mer feud has been settled, but life in South Louisiana still has more twists and turns than the muddy Mississippi.

New Orleanians are under attack from a copycat killer mimicking the crimes of a 1918 serial murderer known as the Axeman of New Orleans. Thanks to a tip from the undead pirate Jean Lafitte, DJ Jaco knows the attacks aren’t random—an unknown necromancer has resurrected the original Axeman of New Orleans, and his ultimate target is a certain blonde wizard. Namely, DJ.

Combatting an undead serial killer as troubles pile up around her isn’t easy. Jake Warin’s loup-garou nature is spiraling downward, enigmatic neighbor Quince Randolph is acting weirder than ever, the Elders are insisting on lessons in elven magic from the world’s most annoying wizard, and former partner Alex Warin just turned up on DJ’s to-do list. Not to mention big maneuvers are afoot in the halls of preternatural power.

Suddenly, moving to the Beyond as Jean Lafitte’s pirate wench could be DJ’s best option.

Review: I looked forward to the release of this third volume as it’s a series I really love. In fact, Suzanne Johnson has many original ideas in her novels and I was waiting to have again our undead characters as well as our exciting heroes.

DJ has a lot of works these days, and she needs to deal with all the troubles occuring. A serial killer is in loose in the city led by a necromancer and it is up to our heroine to stop him. But how will she be able to kill someone immortal? Especially before he kills her. But she must also manage all her powers which seem to increase with time, her possible change after being scratched by a werewolf , her attraction to Alex or manage the boyfriend of her best friend who seems very interested by her. Yes as I was telling you, a lot of events, keeping us in suspense throughout the story.

I was completely swept away by the story and all that was happening. DJ sees her life turned upside down in the novel both in a professional and personal level. She is left with many responsibilities she never requested, as well as the attention of characters she would have avoided. I admit that I was intrigued by what was happening and I could not wait to have all the answers to my questions. But we have them in time and I was surprised more than once . Suzanne knows her characters and lead us astray in multiple hypotheses.

I loved seeing the DJ’s evolution, although sometimes she doesn’t think about the consequences of her actions and that puts her in rather complicated situations. She will face many dangers as many obligations, and I was curious to see how she would manage it. But this will not be easy for her, even far from it! But of course, we have once again Jean Laffite, this character that makes us succumb every time. I was glad to see him in the story, helping DJ the best he can, trying to get something from her as usual. But Alex and Jake are there too, although it is difficult for the two of them to control what happens in their lives, even if the reasons are different. But of course, we also have many other characters that I let you discover that are just as interesting, especially one that we did not suspect the involvement in the life of our heroine.

This novel begins many things as you can see and I loved every moment of it! I am now more than impatient to read about what will happen as soon as possible! A pleasant surprise that I recommend to fans of urban fantasy!
