Review: The final installment in the Divergent trilogy, needless to say that I expected it as the messiah. Divergent is one of my favorite sagas. I loved the first two books (Divergent and Insurgent) and I was really excited and eager to finally read this book 3 – the book of revelations – and to find out the ending of this story. Unfortunately, for my part, this book has not kept its promises. Or maybe I expected too much of this book. I do not know… but the fact is that I was disappointed. Like many people, the ending of Insurgent left me with a lot of questions. I wanted to find out more about those who created the system of factions as well as the mission of all the Divergent. I wanted to find out what was outside the fence!

In the end I don’t know what to think. But what I’m sure is that among the three volumes, Allegiant is the one I liked least. I must say that I didn’t expect such an ending! Am I satisfied by such a conclusion? No, not really. The author’s choice concerning the fate of her characters somewhat disturbed me. I don’t know if Roth’s purpose was to be original by concluding her story that way but one thing is certain, this read won’t leave you indifferent. Whatever you like or dislike Allegiant, the Divergent series is a must read. Despite this unsatisfying ending, Divergent remains one of the best dystopian series I’ve read so far. I didn’t really expect a happy ending but I was far from suspecting that the trilogy would end this way. And if the word “sacrifice” seems to be the key word throughout the novel, for my part, I regret I didn’t prepare myself to endure this.

But it’s not only the ending that disappointed me in this book. Other points were also quite annoying. In this novel, Veronica Roth chooses to alternate Tris and Tobias’s POV, something she has not done in the previous books but when we finish the novel, we understand why the author chose this mode of narration. I have nothing against having Tobias’s perspective as bonus here. However I must say that sometimes it was hard to determine who was who. Indeed, the author uses the same tone for both characters so that sometimes we have the impression to deal with the same person. Even if it is specified in the beginning of each chapter who is the narrator, it’s quite disconcerting.

Another disturbing point: the wacky revelations made throughout the novel that keep coming one after the other, chapter by chapter, to the point that I found it boring, without mentioning the lack of action. It was very hard for our heroes to deal with these revelations. They find out that everything they have experienced so far – that their whole life – was a lie. From the beginning they were observed by other people so in the end, they are just the result of an extensive scientific experiment whose sole purpose is to save humanity from its own destruction. Well… why not? I don’t mind. However what upset me the most here was the entire “genetic manipulation” thing. These explanations were too far-fetched to be credible.

Then there are the characters. If we compare with the previous books, we can find inconsistencies in the attitude of some characters. For example, I didn’t understand Evelyn’s attitude at the end of the book and even less Marcus’s attitude (who just disappeared, almost forgotten by the author) given the portrait the author did of them in the previous books. Their reaction was rather illogical and in the end all the conflicts were resolved too easily. Even Tobias disappointed me in this book! Faced with a new environment, he seemed hopeless. He was so strong and brave in the first two books… He was used to be suspicious too. But in Allegiant he became weak, credulous and worse, he made a terrible mistake. Only the heroin Tris was true to form.

Finally, to come back to the famous ending, I don’t question Tris’s choice. I think that she just could not stand there and do nothing. That is not like her so I found her reaction normal and predictable. It was even beautiful and touching. However I regret the fact that nothing has been done in advance to prevent that. I mean a better solution, a plan that would have saved everyone. It’s sad to come to such extremes.

To conclude it was a very disappointing book compared to Divergent and Insurgent. It’s really unfortunate. However the Divergent series remains a good dystopian story, probably one of the best although I have very mixed feelings regarding this final book.

Divergent, Tome 3

Résumé : Tris et ses alliés ont réussi à renverser les Érudits. Les sans-faction mettent alors en place une dictature, imposant à tous la disparition des factions. Plutôt que de se plier à ce nouveau pouvoir totalitaire, Tris, Tobias et leurs amis choisissent de s’échapper. Le monde qu’ils découvrent au-delà de la Clôture ne correspond en rien à ce qu’on leur a dit. Ils apprennent ainsi que leur ville, Chicago, fait partie d’une expérience censée sauver l’humanité contre sa propre dégénérescence. Mais l’humanité peut-elle être sauvée contre elle-même ?

Avis : Dernier volet de la trilogie Divergent, inutile de vous dire que je l’attendais comme le messie. Divergente est en effet une de mes sagas préférées. J’avais adoré les deux premiers tomes et j’étais vraiment impatiente de pouvoir lire enfin ce tome 3, le tome des révélations pour connaître le dénouement de l’histoire. Malheureusement, je dois dire que ce troisième tome n’a pas tenu toutes ses promesses. Ou alors peut être que j’en attendais trop de ce livre, je ne sais pas… toujours est-il que j’ai été déçue. Comme beaucoup de personnes, à la fin du tome 2, je me suis posé beaucoup de questions. Je voulais en découvrir plus sur les fondateurs de la ville, ceux qui ont créé le système des factions ainsi que sur la mission de Divergents. Je voulais savoir ce qu’il y avait au-delà de la clôture !

Au final, je ne sais pas trop quoi en penser. Ce qui est sûr c’est que des trois tomes, c’est celui-ci que j’ai le moins aimé. Il faut dire que je ne m’attendais pas mais alors pas du tout à une telle fin ! Est-ce que j’ai été satisfaite par une telle conclusion ? Non, pas vraiment. Le choix de l’auteur concernant le sort ses personnages m’a quelque peu perturbée. J’ignore si le but de Veronica Roth était de se montrer originale ou non en achevant son histoire de cette manière mais une chose est certaine, on ne ressort pas indifférent de cette lecture. Qu’on aime ou qu’on n’aime pas ce tome 3, Divergente est une saga que l’on se doit malgré tout de lire car même si j’ai du mal à accepter ce dénouement, elle reste une des meilleures séries dystopiques que j’ai lu jusqu’à présent. Je ne m’attendais pas vraiment à un happy end mais j’étais loin de me douter que la trilogie finirait ainsi. Et si le terme « sacrifice » semble être le maître mot tout au long de ce dernier tome, quelque part, j’aurais bien aimé avoir été préparée.

Mais il n’y a pas que la fin qui m’a déçue dans ce livre. D’autres points m’ont aussi pas mal gênée. Dans ce roman, Veronica Roth choisit d’alterner les points de vues de Tris et de Tobias, chose qu’elle n’a pas fait dans le les tomes précédents mais une fois le roman achevé, on comprend mieux pourquoi l’auteure a opté pour ce mode de narration. Je n’ai rien contre le fait d’avoir le point de vue de Tobias en prime ici, en revanche, je dois dire que parfois, j’ai eu un peu de mal à m’y retrouver. En effet, l’auteure emploie le même ton pour les deux personnages, ce qui fait que parfois, on a l’impression d’avoir affaire à la même personne même si c’est précisé en tout début de chapitre qui est le narrateur.

Autre point assez déconcertant : les révélations pour le moins farfelues qui y sont faites et qui s’enchainent les unes après les autres, chapitre après chapitre, au point qu’à la longue j’ai trouvé cela un peu ennuyeux, sans parler du manque d’action. Des révélations très dures à encaisser pour nos héros. Ces derniers découvrent que tout ce qu’ils ont vécu jusqu’ici, que leur vie entière n’était qu’un mensonge, que depuis toujours, ils étaient observés par d’autres gens et qu’au final, ils ne sont que le fruit d’une vaste expérience scientifique réalisée dont l’unique but de sauver l’humanité qui court à sa perte. Bon, je veux bien, là où j’ai décroché en revanche ce sont les explications relatives aux « manipulations génétiques » qui étaient vraiment très peu crédibles voire même tirées par les cheveux.

Puis il y a les personnages : en comparant avec les tomes précédents, on note des incohérences au niveau de l’attitude de certains personnages. Par exemple, je n’ai pas du tout compris l’attitude d’Evelyn à la fin, pas plus que celle de Marcus d’ailleurs (qui lui a carrément été zappé par l’auteure dans les dernières pages) compte tenu du portrait qu’on a fait d’eux dans les livres précédents. Leur réaction est même plutôt illogique et au final j’ai trouvé un peu trop facile la façon dont tous les conflits se règlent. Même Tobias m’a déçu dans ce tome ! Confronté à un nouvel environnement, il m’a semblé complètement paumé. Ce personnage qui était si fort et courageux au début laisse ici la place à un être faible et alors qu’on le décrivait comme un personnage toujours méfiant, ici il se montre trop crédule et commet de graves erreurs. Seule Tris, l’héroïne, reste égale à elle-même.

Enfin, pour revenir sur cette fameuse fin, je ne remets pas en cause le choix qu’a fait Tris. Je pense qu’à propos de son frère (et ce malgré tout le mal qu’il lui avait fait) elle ne pouvait tout simplement pas rester plantée là sans rien faire. Ce n’est pas ce à quoi elle nous avait habitué donc j’ai même trouvé sa réaction normale et assez prévisible. C’est même le passage le plus émouvant et le plus beau du livre. En revanche, j’ai regretté le fait que rien n’ait été fait en amont pour éviter qu’elle en arrive là. N’y avait-il pas d’autres solutions à creuser, un meilleur plan qui aurait sauvé tout le monde ?

Un troisième tome donc nettement en dessous des deux précédents avec un dénouement dont je peine encore à me remettre deux jours après. C’est un peu dommage mais Divergente reste toutefois une très belle trilogie dystopique, l’une des meilleures selon moi et même si je suis très mitigée en ce qui concerne ce dernier tome, je ne peux que vous la recommander.

Review: This sequel has taken so long to be published in France, to the point that I was desperate to have it in my hands one day. Like many other readers, I must confess that when I started to read this second book, I had difficulties to remember what happened before and it was necessary for me to plunge back in the last hundred pages of the first book to remind myself of certain things. The story picks where book 1 left us. The system of factions has been shattered after the simulation attack orchestrated by the Erudites and which decimated a large part of the Abnegation faction. So we find our two heroes Tris and Tobias (Four) then Marcus, Caleb and Peter who are going to the Amity sector. The world they have always known is now ravaged by the war between factions. Amity grants asylum to all those who have survived to the attack under certain conditions. But the respite of the two young people is short. After their success and with half of the Dauntless under their control, the Erudite, in the person of Jeanine Matthews, are determined to finish what they started. The insurgency is coming. Tris and Tobias will have to face once again the horror and they will have to fight for their survival.

Despite a few details that I had forgotten, I must say that I read with pleasure this novel from the start to end. I loved this book although it was darker than the previous one. Here we have a heroine who is not doing well at all. Indeed, Tris feels guilty for what happened to Will in the previous book. She is constantly dwelling on this terrible moment when she was over a barrel. Then there is the loss of her parents. She is a damaged girl, crushed by remorse and sorrow and psychologically fragile. She becomes withdrawn and her relationship with Tobias suffers of that. She starts to hide things and even ends up lying to him. Secrets and lack of communication jeopardize their love story. It was frustrating to see them suffering like that. Tobias finds himself completely helpless against a Tris unstable who is near of falling apart. But when we think of all the terrible things that happened to her, we can understand it and we wonder how she didn’t become crazy. The horrors which our heroine has assisted in book 1 were just a preview of what was really expected to her. Here Tris will have to make some difficult choices and these choices will eat her away even more. She will also have to endure terrible things. Some scenes are unbearable. I am still surprised by the darkness of this book. Our heroine is not spared. Adversity is everywhere, the tests are numerous, all harder as each other and we are far from the trainings and simulations of the beginning.

Concerning the secondary characters, there are those that we had already met in the previous volume, including some Dauntless: Uriah, Zeke, Lynn, Christina, Marlene or Tori. We also met Johanna Reyes, who represents Amity and Jack Kang who represents Candor. This second installment of the series is also an opportunity for us to meet several factionless as Evelyn and we learn more about Tobias (Four) as we finally know who he really is.

With a tightly plotted storyline, the author keeps us in suspense from beginning to end. The stakes seem higher than what we originally thought. It is also a book rich in revelations and twists. Some characters have surprised me, others disappointed me terribly. To conclude I would say it is an excellent book and as good as the previous one. And with such an ending all we want to do is read the third book! The waiting will be long.

Résumé : Le monde de Tris a volé en éclat. La guerre a dressé entre elles les factions qui régissent la société, elle a tué ses parents et fait de ses amis des tueurs. Tris est rongée par le chagrin et la culpabilité. Mais elle est divergente. Plus que tout autre, elle doit choisir son camp. Et se battre pour sauver ce qui peut encore l’être.


Avis : Cette suite a mis tellement de temps à paraître en France, au point que je désespérais de l’avoir un jour entre mes mains. Comme bon nombre d’autres lecteurs, je dois avouer qu’au moment de débuter la lecture de ce livre, je ne me rappelais plus très bien de ce qui s’était passé avant et il a donc fallu que je replonge dans les cent dernières pages du premier tome pour me remémorer certaines choses. L’histoire reprend donc là où le tome 1 nous avait laissés. Le système des factions a volé en éclat suite à l’attaque sous simulation orchestrée par les Érudits et qui a décimé une grande partie de la faction des Altruistes. On retrouve donc nos deux héros, Tris et Tobias (Quatre) ainsi que Marcus, Caleb et Peter qui se rendent chez les Fraternels. Le monde qu’ils ont toujours connu est désormais ravagé par cette guerre entre factions. Les Fraternels accordent l’asile à tous ceux qui ont survécu à l’attaque sous certaines conditions. Mais le répit des deux jeunes gens est de courte durée. Forts de leur succès et avec la moitié des Audacieux sous leur contrôle, les Érudits, en la personne de Jeanine Matthews, sont déterminés à finir ce qu’ils ont commencé. Tris et Tobias se retrouvent donc de nouveau face à l’horreur et vont devoir encore lutter pour leur survie.

Malgré quelques détails que j’avais oubliés, je dois dire que j’ai lu ce roman d’une traite. J’ai adoré cette suite bien qu’elle soit plus sombre que le tome précédent. On a ici une héroïne qui ne va pas bien du tout. En effet, Tris se sent coupable de ce qui est arrivé à Will dans le tome 1. Elle ressasse sans cesse ce terrible instant où elle était au pied du mur. A cela il faut ajouter la perte de ses parents. C’est une jeune fille meurtrie, accablée par le remords et le chagrin et fragile psychologiquement. Elle finit par se replier sur elle-même et du coup, c’est sa relation avec Tobias qui en pâtit. Elle commence à lui cacher des choses puis finit même par lui mentir. Les secrets et le manque de communication mettent à mal leur histoire d’amour. C’était assez frustrant de les voir souffrir ainsi tous les deux. Tobias se retrouve complètement démuni face à une Tris instable qui est à deux doigts de craquer.

Il faut dire qu’avec tout ce qui lui arrive, on peut la comprendre, on se demande même comment elle fait pour ne pas basculer dans la folie. Les horreurs auxquelles notre héroïne a assisté dans le tome 1 n’étaient qu’un aperçu de ce qui l’attendait vraiment. Ici, Tris va devoir faire des choix difficiles qui la rongeront encore plus. On lui fera également subir des choses atroces. Certaines scènes sont dures, voire même insoutenables. J’ai quand même été surprise par la noirceur de ce tome. Notre héroïne n’est pas épargnée, les épreuves s’enchaînent, toutes plus dures les unes que les autres et on est bien loin des entraînements et des simulations du début.

Pour ce qui est des personnages secondaires, on retrouve tous ceux que l’on avait déjà croisé dans le tome précédent, notamment du côté des Audacieux : Uriah, Zeke, Lynn, Christina, Marlene ou encore Tori. On fait également la connaissance de Johanna Reyes, la représentante des Fraternels, ainsi que Jack Kang, le représentant des Sincères. Ce deuxième volet est aussi l’occasion pour nous de rencontrer plusieurs sans-faction dont Evelyn, et d’en apprendre un peu plus sur Tobias (Quatre), savoir qui il est vraiment.

L’intrigue est vraiment bien ficelée et nous tient en haleine du début jusqu’à la fin. Les enjeux semblent bien plus importants que ce que l’on croyait au départ. C’est aussi un tome qui est riche en révélations et en rebondissements. Certains personnages m’ont surpris, d’autres m’ont terriblement déçue. On regrettera parfois l’emploi du présent qui au début gêne un peu la lecture mais par la suite, on finit presque par l’oublier, tellement on est happé par le récit. Pour conclure je dirais que c’est un excellent tome, dans la même lignée que le précédent. Et avec une telle fin on n’a qu’une hâte, lire le 3e, en espérant que cette fois-ci l’attente sera moins longue.

Review : I couldn’t wait to read this book but at the same time, I was apprehensive. I’m a dystopian novels addict and after reading almost all the books of this kind published in France, I was afraid to read an other one and so dislike it ! Fortunately, it wasn’t the case. With novels such as Divergent I think dystopia still has a bright future! Because and it must be said, this novel is amazing!

The action takes place in the post-apocalyptic city of Chicago, where the society is divided into five factions: Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, Candor and Erudite. Every year, teenagers who have reached the age of 16 must, after the results of an aptitude test, choose the faction they will remain faithful until death. Beatrice (or Tris) is one of those teenagers. She belongs to an Abnegation family, so logic would dictate that she would choose this one to stay with her parents. However, it wasn’t the case, she chooses Dauntless.

The factions were introduced with the aim of creating a “perfect civilization”, to avoid making the same mistakes again. But gradually we realize that this system is far from being so perfect. Indeed, the thirst for power has gained some factions, especially Erudites, which had the effect of creating tensions not only between the factions but also between them. So, Peace with the factions is threatened.

Abnegation touched me the most. I found the people of this faction incredible. They always have to put the needs of others before their own. For example, they can’t look in a mirror or carry objects or clothing that make them different from others, they can’t even celebrate their birthday, and so on… Everything is done to help them to forget themselves. They constantly make sacrifices, they don’t take advantage of life, which is such a pity. So I think they have a very sad life, but it’s their choice and that’s why I admire them so much. This way of life and thought is also what makes this faction incorruptible. That’s why they govern and make decisions for the five factions (But this situation doesn’t please at all the Erudites). Most of them (except one) are nice, totally devoted to others and they will do anything to help their friends regardless any circumstances. They are very touching, especially Beatrice’s Parents. I wanted to know at once how it goes in Amity, but unfortunately, this faction is practically absent. I hope to know more in the next book.

The main characters are very interesting too! I liked the heroine Beatrice, who has appeared fragile and strong at the same time. Beatrice never felt out of place among Abnegation. She describes herself as a courageous, proud and sometimes selfish person, which is in total contradiction to her first faction. That’s why she decided to become a Dauntless. This doesn’t make her an insensitive person on the contrary her altruistic side is still quite present. Her initiation in Dauntless is a real assault course. This faction also affected me a lot. Dauntless represents strength, courage, fearlessness and self-transcendence. They like to fight, have the spirit of competition, are keen on extreme sports, and have piercings and tattoos. Life in this faction is hard, especially for novices like her, because places are limited, only the best are taken after the “initiation phase” and the competition is tough. The tests are difficult, both physical and mental. Sometimes it’s violent. Beatrice has to deal with the jealousy and cruelty of other competitors. Rivalries are numerous. Sometimes Tris doubts of herself, but almost immediately she gets over it to prove she has her place here.

I liked also the relationship between Tris and Four which is a beautiful romance even if it doesn’t occupy a central place in the story.

To conclude, I loved Divergent from beginning to end. To my mind, it’s the best dystopia since The Hunger Games. I was completely fascinated by this world to the point that I’m thinking about it again! Insurgent, the next book will be available in the summer of 2012 in France. The wait will be long!

À 16 ans elle doit choisir sa nouvelle appartenance pour le reste de sa vie. Cas rarissime, son test d’aptitudes n’est pas concluant. Elle est divergente, elle est en danger de mort !

Avis : J’étais impatiente de pouvoir enfin lire ce livre mais en même temps, j’avais de l’appréhension. Étant une accro de dystopie et ayant pratiquement lu tous les livres du genre parus en France, j’avais peur en lisant cet énième roman dystopique, d’arriver à saturation ! Eh bien cela n’a pas été le cas, bien au contraire. Avec des romans tels que Divergent, la dystopie a encore de beaux jours devant elle ! Car oui, il faut le dire, ce roman est excellent !

L’action se déroule donc dans la ville post-apocalyptique de Chicago, où la société est divisée en 5 factions : les Altruistes, les Audacieux, les Érudits, les Sincères et les Fraternels. Chaque année, les adolescents âgés de 16 ans doivent, à l’issue d’un test d’aptitudes, choisir la faction à laquelle ils devront appartenir et rester fidèles jusqu’à leur mort. Beatrice (ou Tris) fait partie de ces adolescents. Étant issue d’une famille d’Altruistes, la logique voudrait qu’elle choisisse la faction des Altruistes, afin de rester auprès de ses parents. Pourtant, c’est finalement vers les Audacieux que Beatrice se tourne.

Les factions ont été instaurées dans le but de créer une « civilisation parfaite », afin d’éviter de commettre à nouveau les mêmes erreurs que par le passé. Mais au fur et à mesure que l’on progresse dans la lecture, on se rend compte que ce système est loin d’être si parfait. En effet, la soif de pouvoir a gagné certaines factions, surtout celle des Érudits, ce qui a eu pour effet de créer des tensions non seulement entre les factions mais aussi à l’intérieur même de celles-ci. La paix entre les différentes factions est donc menacée.

La faction des Altruistes est celle qui m’a le plus touchée car je les ai trouvé incroyables. Ils doivent toujours faire passer les besoins des autres avant les leurs. Ainsi, par exemple, ils ne peuvent pas se regarder dans un miroir, ni porter des objets ou vêtements qui les mettraient en valeur, ni fêter leur anniversaire, etc. Tout est fait pour les aider à s’oublier eux-mêmes. Ils font constamment des sacrifices, ils ne profitent pas de la vie, ce qui est vraiment dommage car il faut quand même penser un peu à soi de temps en temps. C’est donc une bien triste existence qu’ils mènent là mais c’est leur choix et c’est pour ça que je les admire tant. Ce mode de vie et de pensée c’est aussi ce qui rend les Altruistes incorruptibles. C’est la raison pour laquelle ce sont eux qui gouvernent et qui prennent des décisions pour les 5 factions, ce qui ne plaît pas du tout aux Érudits qui voudraient siéger à ce conseil à leur place. Dans l’ensemble (à une exception près) ce sont de braves gens, entièrement dévoués aux autres et prêts à tout pour aider leur prochain quelles que soient les circonstances. Vous l’aurez compris, les Altruistes m’ont beaucoup bouleversée, en particulier les parents de Beatrice et j’aurais voulu savoir du coup comment ça se passe chez les Fraternels, mais malheureusement, ces-derniers sont pratiquement absents, peut être qu’on aura plus d’infos dans les prochains tomes.

Les personnages principaux quant à eux sont très attachants ! J’ai beaucoup apprécié l’héroïne Beatrice, qui m’a parue fragile et très forte à la fois. Beatrice ne s’est jamais vraiment sentie à sa place chez les Altruistes. Elle se dit être courageuse, orgueilleuse parfois même égoïste, ce qui est en totale contradiction avec sa faction d’origine. C’est pourquoi elle prend la décision de devenir une Audacieuse. Cela ne fait pas d’elle pour autant un être insensible, son côté Altruiste reste assez présent. Son « initiation » chez les Audacieux s’avèrera être un véritable parcours du combattant. Cette faction m’a également beaucoup marquée d’ailleurs. La faction des Audacieux, incarne la force, le courage, l’intrépidité et le dépassement de soi. Les Audacieux aiment se battre, ils ont l’esprit de compétition et sont très portés sur les sports extrêmes, les piercings et les tatouages. La vie au sein de cette faction est dure, surtout pour les novices comme elle, car les places sont limitées, seuls les meilleurs sont pris à l’issue de la « phase d’initiation » et la concurrence est rude. Les épreuves sont difficiles, aussi bien physiques que mentales. Par moments, c’est même assez violent. Beatrice doit faire face à la jalousie et à la cruauté des autres. Les rivalités sont nombreuses. Parfois, elle se met à douter d’elle-même mais aussitôt, elle reprend le dessus afin de prouver qu’elle a bien sa place dans cette faction.

J’ai bien aimé également la relation entre Tris et Quatre, qui sans occuper une place centrale, reste une très belle romance, touchante et sobre à la fois.

En conclusion, j’ai adoré Divergent, du début jusqu’à la fin. C’est la meilleure dystopie depuis Hunger Games. C’est un gros coup de cœur ! J’ai été happée d’entrée de jeu par le récit : une fois commencé, impossible de lâcher ce livre. J’ai été complètement fascinée par cet univers au point que j’y repense encore ! Insurgent, la suite de Divergent ne sortira qu’à l’été 2012 en France. L’attente va être longue !!!

Un livre à lire de toute urgence et que je recommande à tous les fans du genre !
