Review : A paranormal romance quite nice but which doesn’t renew the genre

Unbeknownst to humans a war rages between the Breeds warriors and the Rogues. Breed warriors and Rogues are both vampires but the Rogues, unlike their counterparts of the Breed, have given up for the bloodthirsty which makes them monstrous and cruel. Lucan Thorne is a Breed warrior. He leads a small group of vampires warriors whose purpose is to protect their race and the humans of the threat of the Rogues. Lucan despises the Rogues and has always devoted his life to fight them. Nothing else mattered … until he meets Gabrielle Maxwell, a photographer. Soon, Lucan understands that this woman isn’t a human like any other and he can’t refrain himself to be attracted to her. Except that staying with her would means failing in his duty to always protect his people, not to mention the fact that she’s constantly in danger with him because in addition to fight against the Rogues, Lucan must also fight against himself. Indeed, the bloodlust is taking over him, threatening to turn him also into Rogue.

The story is captivating and it is quickly readable but it’s still deja vu. It looks a lot like The Black Dagger Brotherhood (JR Ward), or the Lords of the Underworld (Gena Showalter) and other series in the same kind. It’s a classical paranormal romance.
Like in all paranormal romances, the love story is a central point but the secondary characters (in this case the other warriors) are also present. This first volume aims to raise the plot and it presents the different characters we’ll find in the next books.

This series isn’t worth The Black Dagger Brotherhood and more importantly, it adds nothing new to the genre. However, it’s very entertaining. I therefore recommend it to fans of vampire warriors well muscled and all those who never get tired of reading paranormal romance.

  1. Ha! I really love this series, but yes, you are right, it is very much like the BDB, though I think the last few books in the series have really started to stray away from the BDB shadow.
