Q: Define what characteristics your favorite books share. Do they all have a kick ass heroine or is the hot love interest the Alpha Male?
I really like to read some books with kick ass heroines. I think it’s the reason I read a lot of Urban Fantasy novels, they always have what I want from a book. We can find a strong heroine but who however always has some weaknesses, so it’s easier to relate to her. After that, I think it’s quite the same thing for everyone, I need a story with a good plot and some interesting characters.
I think it’s nice to have some Alpha Males but it depends on the book. I’m not too difficult with my books, really, I just need to get into the story.

Yes – Kick ass heroines are super fun to read about and I agree, weaknesses do help to make them easier to relate too. Great answer!

I love kick-ass heroines too — they’re always so much more fun to read about! 🙂 But you’re so right when you say that you want to be able to relate to the character, Mel! Because it doesn’t matter how kick-ass she is if you can’t connect with her, right? And have a hot guy to swoon over definitely makes it more interesting! x)

This was such an awesome answer, Mel! Our formulas for awesome books are so similar! 🙂 <3 I hope you have an amaaaaazing weekend!

I don’t have to, either, but it very recurrent in my books. It really depends on the book I think.

  6. Underworld Love Addiction

OMG! YES!!! A kick-ass heroine is always great! I think that’s why I loved both Graceling and Vampire Academy so much! Those girls kicked major ass!

Love those kick-ass heroines as well. Don’t like Alpha Males who are excessively dominant though.

LOL, my favorites have awesome males. 😉 I’m a sucker for those. I can forgive the heroine, if there’s a good love interest in there!

  13. Sam

A lot of my favorite YA books have kick-ass heroines, but not all of them. I do love it though when a girl can kick butt! 😉

Kick ass heroines are cool, but I have to admit that I’m all about the Alpha Males. LOL

Hope you are having a happy weekend.

  19. Rea

Hi! THanks for stopping by on Friday. Sorry it’s taken all weekend to return the favour!

I agree, a kickass heroine is often the foundation for a great story. Some heroines go a bit too far for me, though, like Katsa from Graceling. I didn’t like her at all. It’s the same with alpha males – some are great but some are just too much! Have you read Jory Strong? She writes UF erotica and I don’t recommend her if you haven’t but her male characters are an example of males that are just too alpha-y!

Hope you had a great weekend!

    1. Melliane

Oh no I don’t think I’ve read this author yet. But I understand, sometimes it’s a little too much.

  20. Christy @ TheReaderBee

Melliane! Yes! I LOVE Kickass heroines, and it’s EXACTLY why I like UF! I also love some romance with my kickassery–another reason I read UF and PNR 😉

  24. Ninja Girl

    Hey Melliane,
Old follower here 🙂 Loved your answer; that’s pretty much why I love Urban Fantasy, too. It’s always got a really tough girl lead, but, like you said, the weaknesses humanize her and give her something relatable.
Hope you have a great week,
    Ninja Girl
