A Novel Seduction by Gwyn Cready

Synopsis: When snobbish book critic Ellery Sharpe screws up at Vanity Place magazine, her boss assigns her the ultimate punishment: write an ode to romance novels, a genre she considers the literary equivalent of word search puzzles. To make matters worse, he hires her sexy former party boy ex, Axel Mackenzie, to shoot the photos.

Axel really wants the project to succeed. For one, the magazine will double his fee if he convinces strong-willed Ellery to write a story no woman can resist. Besides, getting Ellery to fall for romance novels might be just the push she needs to believe people can change…even him. At his sister’s advice, Axel gives Ellery a copy of Kiltlander, a much-adored romance whose warrior hero is utterly irresistible.

To her dismay, Ellery finds herself secretly falling in love with the story — and with Axel, who’s drawing his own lessons from the book’s compelling hero. With her carefully crafted image of herself crumbling and her dream job on the line, will Ellery risk it all to make the leap from tight-lipped literati to happily-ever-after heroine?

Review: I loved the idea of the novel with this summary and I found it very amusing to see the kind of French cover we had. A romance book on romance with highlanders and a journalist? What more can we ask for?

Ellery is a very conscientious journalist, but when a subject does not interest her, her work isn’t that good. But when one day she makes an article destroying romance books including one author in particular, everything will change. Indeed, the author in question, the lover of her editor in chief, is really not happy and to be forgiven, Ellery is obliged to make an article advocating romance books as women unlike her love them. It’s an impossible job for our heroine, but on top of that, vying for a very important position, this work could sabotage her career. But if it was only that … because in addition to this story, she must team up with her ex, Axel, who has disappointed her at the highest point in their relationship. But Ellery could be surprised by all this story.

I must say that I really enjoyed the novel. I did not really expect to have this kind of story but it was a great pleasure to read it. Ellery is a very stubborn woman and she believes that romance is only readable and the books useless. Yet she has never really read a story like that and it will force her to delve into some of the most famous stories, as well as travel to places she had never visited before. I loved seeing the evolution of the character of Ellery. She softens gradually, and although it is difficult for her to admit that the books have something more, she starts to like them. I do not know if the books mentioned here are real, and I think they’re all imagined, but I must say that I liked the mentions and I would have been curious to read them too. But even more, I admit that the relationship between Axel and Ellery really intrigued me. We can therefore understand that along the chapters from the past what happened. This is a very sad story and we realize that everything was started by many unsaid things that grew worse over time. And I was looking forward to see if they would resolve their problems and how.

It was a nice story combines romance novels, as well as a story between two characters who are made for each other. A great novel.

  1. Lol I am disappointed in the cover, as he clearly wears shorts under his kilt. But the blurb sounds great, I only hope that Kiltlander is not another word for Outlander.
Great review Melliane, glad you enjoyed it so much.
