Execution Underground, Book 2
Synopsis: Hunters of the supernatural, the Execution Underground are an elite group tasked with protecting humanity…but at what price? As an exorcist, David Aronowitz grew up the target of demonic assassins. Now he’s a member of the Execution Underground and hellspawn everywhere fear his name. But when a demon slips into the seductive body of the only woman he’s ever loved, David must confront the heartbreak of their past to save her. The piece of her heart Allsún O’Hare gave to David so long ago left her trapped between two worlds: the Fae and the human. And when David comes to her rescue, fate reunites her with her greatest temptation—and her biggest mistake. Now, as they’re swept together into a wicked game with the demon who controls her, David must decide if saving Allsún’s life is worth sacrificing his own—and the future of humanity itself.
Review: I really liked the first book and it’s true that I was curious to see who would be put forward in this sequel. So here we are this time with a Jace’s friend: David, and of course accompanied by a young woman who is none other than Allsun, a friend of Frankie.
Since the end of the first novel, Allsun found herself in a kind of coma for a month and David oversees her every day since this event, hoping she would wake up again soon. Yet, it seems that recently her real identity as Fae was revealed, and some demons are increasingly willing to kill her. And while the young man is called one day to exorcise a demon in a family, he discovers this entire family killed both parents and their baby, something that initiates many problems for our heroes elsewhere. While he investigates, he is really surprised to see Allsun at the crime scene, the girl who once awakened, felt strangely drawn to this place. Unwittingly, and to scare away the demons, the young woman will be forced to stay with her ex-fiance, something that doesn’t please her at all and she doesn’t hesitate to say that. But she will also team up with him to try to understand what happens with all these terrible murders. And while our two heroes face their ancient history and the past they had in common, it will be very difficult for them to deal with what is happening.
I admit that I was really curious to find out why David and Allsun had broken up when we see that they are perfectly made for each other. During the story, we discover a few points, but it is true that I did not expect such events. It was finally really heartbreaking and it is very sad to understand how she managed to go through so many things. David was also fascinating to follow and although it is a little difficult for him to understand what Allsun desires and the reasons for her choices, we see that he could do much for her. And while she tries to resist their former attraction, it is natural for David to be tempted and to abandon himself to it entirely. But that’s not all, because we can also find in several scenes of the novel Jace and Frankie and I must say that I was delighted to see them and to learn what they became later.
I loved how the story was turned and I took a great pleasure to read everything. It was a nice surprise and I’m curious to see what the author had for us in the future. Immortal Hunter is a fast read, just a few hours for me but the ideas are very well found.
