The Offer by Karina Halle

The McGregor Brothers, Book 2

Synopsis: She thinks he’s an arrogant playboy.
He thinks she’s an uptight prude.
But he’s about to make her an offer she can’t refuse.

Nicola Price used to have it all – a great career, the perfect boyfriend, an excessive shoe collection and an apartment in one of San Francisco’s best neighborhoods. But when she gets knocked up and her asshat boyfriend leaves her high and dry, Nicola’s perfectly crafted world comes tumbling down. And stays that way.

Now, Nicola is the proud single mom to a five-year old daughter and living a giant lie. She can barely afford their ghetto apartment and all the men she dates run when they hear she comes with a child. She’s struggling and scared – and nowhere near where she thought she’d be at age thirty-one.

Her saving grace comes in the form of a tall, handsome and wealthy Scotsman Bram McGregor, the older brother of her friend Linden. Bram understands a thing or two about pride, so when tragic circumstances place Nicola at rock bottom, he offers them a place to live in the apartment complex he owns. It’s pretty much the perfect deal, so as long as she doesn’t mind living beside Bram, a man that, despite his generosity, seems to antagonize her at every turn.

But nothing in life is free and as Nicola gets her feet back on the ground, she discovers that the enigmatic playboy may end up costing her more than she thought.

She might just lose her heart.

Those McGregor brothers are nothing but trouble…

Review: When I was attracted by the novel, I did not notice that it was a second volume but I knew that with this genre it should not be a concern. I can tell you now that I’ve finished the book, that I had no problems by starting the series here. I think it must be nice to know the first story, but this is not essential.

We thus find Nicola and her little daughter Ava, both trying to overcome the obstacles in their lives. It was very interesting to have the mother / daughter dynamic in this book, especially when we know that this is not often the case in literature. Besides Ava is the most important person to Nicola and we perfectly feel that through the lines. Moreover, it is very difficult for us to see everything the young woman had to sacrifice for her daughter and finally to understand that life does not seem to work out for some and far from that. Fired before getting a health insurance, Nicolas tries to get her life on track as best as she can, although this is very difficult. Yet she did not expect to have an interesting offer by brother of her best friend’s husband: an apartment in his building while she can find something else and a new job. It is difficult for Nicola to put her pride aside especially as she does not understand what he can withdraw from that but one thing is certain, she will not succumb to his charm! Indeed, Bram is known to be a womanizer and passes from one woman to another in a single second. Yet despite her distrust, something is going to appear between them, but can he change because of that?

I enjoyed this novel, to discover Bram and Nicola, to understand why they were acting like that and it was interesting to learn more about them both. As I said, Nicola has gone through many trials and this is far from over, in fact I did not expect to have such an illness for her daughter, but it was interesting to see how she would manage this new change. Besides Ava is a real touch of freshness to the story and it was a pleasure to see her innocence, hopes and dynamism all over the chapters. In terms of Bram, it is very difficult to statute about him and it’s true that I was curious to see if he was serious or not in relation to Nicola. Yet I confess that I did not expect at all to such a revelation at the end of the story and I was curious to see what would happen.

It was a great find and it is true that I had a great time. I’m curious now to read the first novel and of course the rest of the series at the same time. The author carried me with this volume and I’ll read more with pleasure.

  1. I enjoyed this book as well. And the first one was good as well. I have the rest of the series in my tbr pile and I will get to them soon! Glad you enjoyed this one as well 🙂

  2. I haven’t read this series yet, but I LOVED her Experiment in Terror series! Completely different from this one, but since I really like her writing style I know I’ll get to this as well 🙂
Happy it worked well for you!

  3. Karina Halle’s books are always a hit-or-miss with me. I wasn’t a fan of her recent release, Smut, but I’ve looved some of her past series. I haven’t picked this one up but I’m glad you enjoyed it! I’m definitely going to be adding it to my TBR!

  4. Always nice when you pick one up out of order and it still works just fine 😀 I do enjoy her books. I’ll have to check these out at some point.
