Manwhore by Katy Evans

Manwhore, Book 1

Synopsis: Is it possible to expose Chicago’s hottest player—without getting played?

This is the story I’ve been waiting for all my life, and its name is Malcolm Kyle Preston Logan Saint. Don’t be fooled by that last name though. There’s nothing holy about the man except the hell his parties raise. The hottest entrepreneur Chicago has ever known, he’s a man’s man with too much money to spend and too many women vying for his attention.

Mysterious. Privileged. Legendary. His entire life he’s been surrounded by the press as they dig for tidbits to see if his fairytale life is for real or all mirrors and social media lies. Since he hit the scene, his secrets have been his and his alone to keep. And that’s where I come in.

Assigned to investigate Saint and reveal his elusive personality, I’m determined to make him the story that will change my career.

But I never imagined he would change my life. Bit by bit, I start to wonder if I’m the one discovering him…or if he’s uncovering me.

What happens when the man they call Saint, makes you want to sin?

Review: A lot of my friends have recommended Manwhore to me. I quite liked the Real series by Katy Evans that I read a while ago and thought I’ll be in for a treat with this one. Sadly, it didn’t worked as well as expected.

Don’t get me wrong, it was not a complete debacle either. The book was easy to read and the writing was enjoyable (except for Rachel’s constant blushing). And even if the overall storyline was predictable and not earthshattering, it had its moments and was interesting enough. There were some parts where it dragged a bit, but other parts captured my attention and I wanted to see how everything would end.

The book also featured a surprisingly charming hero, nicely layered and not as fucked-up as in other billionaire stories. Yes he’s a playboy (or was), yes he’s intriguing, but he’s not a stalker, neither a controlling asshole nor into BDSM, and has not been abused in his youth. How refreshing.

I guess he does have some daddy issues, but who doesn’t in this days and age. I found him sweet, caring and fun and I liked that he was the one that wanted to move the relationship on. I particularly enjoyed his interactions with the heroine, Rachel. The teasing and banter between them (the texting!) were very entertaining.

My main problem here was with Rachel, who I found weak and really annoying. I like it when heroines have depth and/or character, but she didn’t have that much personality, which is more often than not a no-go for me. I know, you’re not supposed to judge a book only by its heroes. But when it comes to romance novels, it’s difficult to be emotionally invested in the story if you can’t stand the characters.

What bummed me was her indecision regarding Malcom. One moment she wanted to hook up with him and then the next she was trying to convince herself about why it was such a bad idea and she kept coming up with excuses, one as bad as the other. Sadly, this constant back and forth was just too much for me.

With all that being said, it’s not a bad romance in itself. There were parts I genuinely enjoyed, I’m just sad that that the heroine made it sometimes painful to read. And with such an ending, I will definitively read Manwhore +1. I just need a couple of weeks for my nerves to settle 😉
