The Hiding Place by C.J. Tudor

Synopsis: Joe never wanted to come back to Arnhill. After the way things ended with his old gang–the betrayal, the suicide, the murder–and after what happened when his sister went missing, the last thing he wanted to do was return to his hometown. But Joe doesn’t have a choice. Because judging by what was done to that poor Morton kid, what happened all those years ago to Joe’s sister is happening again. And only Joe knows who is really at fault.

Lying his way into a teaching job at his former high school is the easy part. Facing off with former friends who are none too happy to have him back in town–while avoiding the enemies he’s made in the years since–is tougher. But the hardest part of all will be returning to that abandoned mine where it all went wrong and his life changed forever, and finally confronting the shocking, horrifying truth about Arnhill, his sister, and himself. Because for Joe, the worst moment of his life wasn’t the day his sister went missing. It was the day she came back.

Review: I really liked the author’s previous novel and I must admit that I was very curious to see what she would propose to us this time.

We discover Joe, a man who is fleeing his past. We don’t really know what happened, but one thing is certain when he was younger, his little sister Annie disappeared and if she reappeared 48 hours later, it wasn’t the same little girl… But 25 years have passed, and he receives a message from an unknown source telling him that he must return to his hometown, that someone knows what happened, that he has to stop it from happening again… That’s where the problems start. He returns to the city he thought he would never see again.

I really liked Joe. He’s a character jaded by life, an anti-hero who is no savior. He’s a liar, a thief, but he wants more than anything to find out what happened with Annie so long ago. We’ll learn little by little who he really is, what happened so many years ago and Joe will try to find out if he can prevent everything from happening again.

A good thriller!

  1. I find it hard to read books about bad things happening to kids! What must it feel like as a parent, or sibling, to lose someone like that and not know what happened? Yes, she returned two days later, but a lot can happen in two days. I’m glad you liked this one!
