Review: So here is the third installment of the adventures of our favorite couple! Cat and Bones are finally together. But he had to do a lot of concessions to be with her, like negotiating with Don so she can continue to work as leader of the special unit. Now he goes everywhere she goes. But the missions are more and more dangerous. All the undeads know her reputation of cold-blooded killer. So vampires are more vigilant and acting as bait has become very difficult for Cat even if she is disguised. And as if all of that was not enough, there is another very serious threat hanging over their heads.

I found that there was a lot more action in this volume than in previous ones. In fact the very first pages start quickly. It is also a darker book, compared to others. For the first time since the beginning of the series, Cat will know what pain and suffering are and we will even be scared for her. There are several passages in this volume where we’re heartbroken and the least we can say is that this time, Jeaniene Frost did not spare her heroine. We learn many things about Max and Don. Moreover, the reunion between father and daughter is terrible. But that’s not all: our heroes and their friends will have to face a powerful vampire who is determined to come to eliminate Bones and his lineage. A war is about to explode and to overcome this battle, new alliances will be forged.

The always quiet and reserved master vampire Mencheres will be more present in this book, as well as Spade, Annette and even Ian! Spade is still loyal to Bones. However, Ian surprised me; we realize that ultimately, he is not such a bad guy. Well he’s not perfect either but he has made efforts! As for Annette, like Spade, she remains loyal to Bones. It is difficult for Cat to appreciate her as she is in love with her man, but in these difficult times she can count on her. In addition to the characters we already know, a newcomer appears in this volume: Vlad. And I can already tell you that I love him! He is really a very interesting character and he leaves no one indifferent. He is unique! This is undoubtedly my new favorite secondary character and I can’t wait to know more about him! Then we also meet other secondary characters but most of them are just passing through and they will disappear as quickly as they came.

As regards of Cat’s co-workers, we have Tate who is still annoying! Worse, he has a petty attitude and does everything he can to separate Cat and Bones. It was good to see Dave in top form, especially when we know what happened to him in the previous book! Justina, Cat’s mother, is also changing, she still has prejudices against vampires but seems more tolerant. Rodney’s influence must surely have something to do with that!

In short, you’ll understand, I loved this book! It was better than book 2! And now I’m going to hurry to read book 4.

Review: The end of the previous book was really terrible. Fortunately I had book 2 next to me because otherwise, I would have a fit! In this second installment of the Night Huntress series, the first thing that is surprising is the fact that the action does not take place immediately after the events we had in the previous book, but four years later. I did not think so much time would elapse between the two volumes and I remember I was very surprised the first time I read it.

Now, Cat is the leader of a special unit which is under Don’s direction and whose mission is to eliminate the rogue undead and of course without the population knowing it. She left Bones behind but we should expect that he does not give up so easily! He manages to find Cat in the wedding of her best friend Denise. The reunion is pretty embarrassing especially for Cat. Much time has passed and we find a heroine who is very uncomfortable in his presence. She tries to deceive him by adopting a professional attitude but in vain. She has never forgotten him and when she faces him all the feelings she had fled resurface and strike her hard. Bones meanwhile wants to understand her; he wants an explanation for what happened four years ago.

I enjoyed this second volume, although I found it wasn’t as good as the first one because it focuses more on Cat’s personal problems so there is less action. This book allows Cat to finally clarify things with her family. Cat must learn to balance her career and her love life, something that does not look easy at all. She had managed to make a new life and establish some kind of routine, but now that Bones is back in her life, all the problems she had fled resurface. This book is also rich in revelations especially about her father. And as if it was not enough, killers are after her.

Regarding the secondary characters, we meet Tate, Dave, Juan and Cooper, Cat’s co-worker who are quite interesting, except Tate who sometimes annoyed me. We are also introduced to other characters in this book, including Mencheres, the hero of the second spin-off Eternal Kiss of Darkness, a very powerful Egyptian Master vampire and Bones’ grandfather. Well, sort of. Then we have Annette, who is the first person Bones turned into a vampire and finally Ian, Bones’ creator. Of course, Spade and Rodney are still there too.

It is always a pleasure to plunge into Cat and Bones’ adventures and even if it is a reread, I had a great time with all of these characters and I have formed a strong attachment to them! And now I have only one desire, to read the book 3.

Chasseuse de la nuit, Tome 2

Résumé : La demi-vampire Cat Crawfield est devenue agent spécial, engagée par le gouvernement pour débarrasser le monde de la racaille morte-vivante. Elle n’a rien oublié de tout ce que Bones, son ex, lui a appris. Pourtant, lorsqu’elle se retrouve avec des tueurs aux trousses, elle est contrainte de faire de nouveau appel à lui. Les retrouvailles sont tumultueuses et malgré tous ses efforts pour que leur relation demeure strictement professionnelle, Cat va découvrir que le désir ne meurt jamais… et que le ténébreux vampire compte bien souffler sur les braises encore chaudes.


Avis : La fin du tome précédent était vraiment terrible, heureusement qu’il s’agissait d’une relecture et que j’avais le tome 2 sous la main parce que sinon, j’aurais fait une crise ! Dans ce deuxième opus de Chasseuse de la nuit, la première chose qui peut surprendre est le fait que l’action ne se déroule pas tout de suite après les événements survenus dans le tome 1 mais quatre ans après. Je ne pensais pas qu’autant de temps s’écoulerait entre les deux tomes et je me souviens que la première fois que je l’ai lu, ça m’avait beaucoup surpris.

Désormais, Cat est à la tête d’une unité spéciale qui est placée sous la direction de Don et qui est chargée d’éliminer les morts-vivants qui menacent les humains, tout cela bien sûr à l’insu de la population. Elle s’était éloignée de Bones mais bien sûr il fallait s’attendre à ce que ce dernier ne renonce pas aussi facilement ! Il parvient à retrouver Cat, à l’occasion du mariage de sa meilleure amie Denise. Les retrouvailles sont assez embarrassantes, surtout pour Cat. Beaucoup de temps s’est écoulé et on se retrouve donc avec une héroïne qui est très mal à l’aise en sa présence. Elle essaie de donner le change en adoptant une attitude professionnelle mais en vain. Elle ne l’a jamais oublié et lorsqu’elle se retrouve face à lui, tous les sentiments qu’elle avait enfuis refont surface et la frappent de plein fouet. Bones quant à lui il cherche à comprendre, il veut des explications pour ce qui s’est passé il y a quatre ans.

J’ai bien aimé ce deuxième tome bien que je l’ai trouvé un peu en dessous comparé au premier opus car il se concentre davantage sur les problèmes personnels de Cat et du coup, il y a moins d’action. Ce tome permet à Cat de mettre enfin les choses au clair avec ses proches. Cat doit apprendre à concilier sa vie professionnelle et sa vie amoureuse, chose qui ne s’annonce pas facile du tout. Elle avait réussi à se faire une nouvelle vie et à instaurer une certaine forme de routine mais maintenant que Bones est de retour dans sa vie, tous les problèmes qu’elle avait fuis ressurgissent. C’est aussi un tome qui est riche en révélations notamment à propos de son père. A tout cela il faut aussi ajouter les tueurs qui sont à ses trousses.

Côté personnages secondaires, on fait la connaissance des membres de l’équipe de Cat : Tate, Dave, Juan et Cooper, qui sont assez intéressants, enfin excepté Tate qui m’a par moments un peu tapé sur le système. Ce tome est aussi l’occasion de rencontrer pour la première fois des personnages que l’on sera amenés à revoir par la suite, notamment Mencheres, le héros du deuxième spin off L’Étreinte des ténèbres, un Maître vampire égyptien très puissant et « grand père » de Bones, en quelque sorte. Puis il y a Annette, qui est la première personne que Bones a transformée en vampire et enfin, Ian, le créateur de Bones. Bien sûr, Spade et Rodney sont toujours là eux aussi.

C’est toujours un plaisir de replonger dans les aventures de Cat et Bones et même s’il s’agit là d’une relecture, j’ai passé un très bon moment avec l’ensemble de ces personnages. C’est qu’on finit vite par s’attacher à tout ce beau monde ! Je suis impatiente d’enchaîner avec le tome 3.

Night huntress, Book 1

Then she’s captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unholy partnership. In exchange for finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She’s amazed she doesn’t end up as his dinner–are there actually “good” vampires? Pretty soon Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn’t have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her newfound status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side … and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.


Review: I read the first volume of the Night Huntress series in 2009 but at this time, I did not write a review as I did not have a blog where to post it (and it is the same for the other volumes). But I’m in the mood to want to read again all my favorites Urban Fantasy books, so I thought why not start with this one?

Catherine Crawfield (or Cat) is a hybrid, half-human, half-vampire who spends her life to hunt down and kill vampires. One evening in a nightclub when she is hunting, she spots a vampire more powerful than she used to meet. She decides to approach him and then to kill him. But nothing goes as planned. Huntress at the beginning, she became the prey. This vampire named Bones captures her, interrogates her and finally offers her a deal: he will help her to find her father and he will train her so she will become a formidable huntress and in return, she will hunt down vampires that he will chose himself. A strange partnership you might say, if we take into account the visceral hatred felt by Cat against these creatures, but when it comes to kill more undead, our huntress does not hesitate a moment!

I loved the two main characters! Cat is a truly charming heroine, with strong a character but she’s also very stubborn. She kills vampires since she’s 16 years old only in the hope find her father, the vampire who raped her mother a few years earlier. For Cat, vampires are just bloodthirsty monsters and demonic creatures that must be eliminated at all costs. At least that’s what her mother always told her. Moreover, the relationship between Cat and her mother is difficult. Indeed, although Justina loves her daughter more than anything, she cannot help but see through Cat, the vampire who attacked her. So the hatred Cat feels for the undead deeply affects her and she’s going to take quite some time to finally realize that not everything is black or white. She will evolve throughout the novel, she will try to put herself in question and to override her prejudices to finally end up accepting herself as she is and for our greatest pleasure.

Of course the team she forms with Bones will help! Despite his crude language and the rudeness of some of his actions, he loves Cat and is very patient with her. He is far from being the perfect man and his past is more than dubious, but his feelings for our heroine are obvious and sincere and we can’t help but fall under the spell of this sexy vampire. He will do his best to make Cat understand that vampires are not angels, but they are not all bad either. We can also note that in this first volume, we will also meet Bones’ best friend, Spade, another vampire and the hero of the Spin-off First Drop of Crimson.

The investigation led by our two heroes is very exciting; the writing style is fluid and the end … terrible! In short, Halfway to the Grave is a very successful first volume. If you do not already know this series, I can only recommend it to you, it’s excellent.

Résumé : Mi-humaine, mi-vampire, Catherine Crawfield traque les morts-vivants dans l’espoir de tuer son père, le monstre qui a fichu la vie de sa mère en l’air. Elle est alors capturée par Bones, un vampire chasseur de primes, qui lui impose une association contre nature : il aidera Cat dans sa quête et, en échange, ce très sexy prédateur de la nuit fera d’elle une chasseuse aux réflexes aussi acérés que ses crocs. Mais avant de pouvoir jouer les buteuses de démons, Cat est elle-même prise en chasse par une bande de tueurs. Forcée de choisir son camp, elle va vite se rendre compte qu’être une suceuse de sang a ses avantages…

Avis : J’ai lu ce premier tome de la série Chasseuse de la nuit il y a un bon moment, dès sa sortie en 2009 en fait, mais à l’époque, je n’avais rédigé aucun billet pour parler de ce livre. Il en va de même pour les autres tomes d’ailleurs. Comme en ce moment, je suis en mode « relecture de romans Milady », je me suis dit, pourquoi ne pas commencer par cette série UF qui est l’une de mes préférées du genre?


Catherine Crawfield (ou Cat) est une hybride, mi-humaine, mi-vampire qui passe sa vie à traquer et à tuer des vampires. Un soir, dans une boite de nuit, alors qu’elle était en chasse, elle repère un vampire plus puissant que ceux qu’elle a l’habitude de rencontrer. Elle décide de l’aborder pour lui régler son compte. Mais rien ne se passe comme prévu. De chasseuse, elle est devenue la proie. Ce vampire, nommé Bones la capture, l’interroge puis finit par lui proposer un marché : il l’aidera à retrouver son père et l’entraînera afin qu’elle devienne une chasseuse redoutable et en contrepartie, elle devra traquer les vampires qu’il a lui-même choisi. Une drôle d’association me direz-vous, si l’on tient compte de la haine viscérale qu’éprouve Cat à l’encontre de ces créatures, mais comme il est question de tuer encore plus de morts-vivants, notre chasseuse n’hésite pas bien longtemps !


J’ai adoré ces deux personnages principaux ! Cat est une héroïne vraiment attachante, au caractère bien trompé mais elle est aussi très entêtée. Elle tue des vampires depuis l’âge de 16 ans dans le seul espoir de tomber un jour sur son père, le vampire qui a violé sa mère quelques années plus tôt. Pour Cat, les vampires ne sont que des monstres assoiffés de sang, des créatures démoniaques qu’il faut à tout prix éliminer. Du moins, c’est ce que sa mère lui a toujours inculqué. D’ailleurs, les relations entre Cat et sa mère sont difficiles. En effet, bien que Justina aime sa fille plus que tout, elle ne peut s’empêcher de voir à travers elle le vampire qui l’a agressée. Ainsi donc, la haine qu’inspire les morts-vivants à Cat est ancrée au plus profond d’elle-même et il va lui falloir pas mal de temps pour enfin se rendre compte que tout n’est pas noir ou blanc. Elle évoluera tout au long du roman, tentera de se remettre en question et de passer outre ses préjugés pour enfin finir par s’accepter telle qu’elle est et ce pour notre plus grand plaisir.


Bien sûr l’équipe qu’elle forme avec Bones y sera pour beaucoup ! Malgré son langage assez cru et la rudesse de certains de ses gestes, Bones tient énormément à Cat et il se montre d’une patience exemplaire avec elle. Il est loin d’être l’homme idéal car il faut bien le dire, il a quand même pas mal de défauts et un passé plus que douteux, mais les sentiments qu’il éprouve pour notre héroïne sont évidents et sincères et on ne peut s’empêcher de tomber sous le charme de ce vampire très sexy. Il fera de son mieux pour faire comprendre à Cat que certes, les vampires ne sont pas des enfants de chœur, mais tous ne sont pas pour autant mauvais. A noter que dans ce premier volume, on fera également la connaissance du meilleur ami de Bones, Spade, un autre vampire, le héros du Spin-off La Première goutte de sang. 


L’enquête menée par notre duo d’enfer est très prenante, le style est fluide et la fin… terrible ! Bref, un premier tome très réussi qui annonce une suite tout aussi palpitante ! Si vous ne connaissez pas encore cette série, je ne peux que vous la recommander, car elle est excellente.
