Beyond the Night by Joss Ware (VO)

Envy Chronicles, Book 1

Synopsis : A man with no future . . .

When Dr. Elliott Drake wakes from a mysterious fifty-year sleep, the world as he knew it is gone. Cities are now desolate, and civilization is controlled by deadly immortals. Stranger still is Elliott’s extraordinary new “gift”—he has the power to heal, but it comes with fatal consequences.

A woman with a past . . .

Jade barely escaped the immortals and is now hell-bent on revenge. She trusts no one . . . until Elliott. His piercing gaze and tempting touch shatter her defenses, but the handsome doctor seems to have dangerous secrets of his own. Is it safe to trust him with her heart?

If they are to survive in this dark new world, Jade and Elliott must work together to fight the forces that take them beyond danger.

Beyond desire.

Review : I know Colleen Gleason by her other series : Gardella, and I was very curious about this one.

Elliot and some of his friends are back fifty years after the apocalypse, without knowing what happened. So they’re a little disturbed and they try to adapt in a new world. Of course, like in this kind of books, we find some bloodthirsty creatures which feed on humans. These ones are very intriguing and always repeat the same thing.
Elliot and his friends want to find Envy, the old Las Vegas, where humans have built a refuge. But nothing would have prepared them to this battle against the foreign, these immortal humans who wear a crystal in their chest.
I’m not against Paranormal Romance, but I’m very picky. In this first novel, Elliot fantasizes about Jade, to the point it becomes an obsession. And of course, the first time he sees her, he knows that she is the love of his life.
I didn’t like all the first part of the book which is based on romance and so the story doesn’t progressed. After the half of the book, the action is more present and we learn more about the foreign.

I’ve a mitigated opinion about this book… This novel was easy to read when we decided to hang on. But it’s not a book I really like, even if I’m curious to know what will happen now, and the reason of the apocalypse. The author has created an interesting world but the plot should have been developed since the beginning.
